jessicafischerqueen: <Tyler>- hints for beating <Blacksburg> in corrspondence-

I beat him in the only game we played so far- so I think these tips are "live info"-

1. Try to convince him it's actually a Blitz game.

2. Frequently send him messages like

"Are you sure you want to do that?"
"You realize you are hanging the bishop, eh?"
"Oh is it my move already? I thought you'd resigned"

3. Wait for his computer to malfunction so that it takes so much time to repair that he times out on the game.

I hope these will help!!

You're very welcome!

And I agree-

This is in fact a most excellent games collection:

Game Collection: Fischer vs The Russians

It was of course created by <wanabe2000>, and one of the great strengths of this collection is the list of very fine other <Fischer games collections> in the introduction.

  jessicafischerqueen: FICS Game Day

<CHKURMATE v jessicafischerque> 90/0

I finally win against the cursed <Alapin>

1. e4 c5
2. c3 Nf6
3. d3 Nc6
4. Nf3 d6
5. Nbd2

click for larger view

Ok all I remembered from my many recent study and training sessions against the <Alapin> is that if they play <2.c3> straight off you whip out your Knight to <f6>.

After I managed to do this, I found myself not remembering the line he chose to play- but we accidentally followed a known variation to this position.

Now I deviate (unknowingly) with

5...a6?
6.d4 cxd4
7.cxd4 e6
8.a3 b5?

click for larger view

White can play <9.a4> here and pose a problem, though I'm not sure how big-

If <9.a4 Bb7 10.a5!> might cause problems.

Sharper though, might be <9.a4 b4> with chaos to come...

9.Qc2 Bb7
10.g3 Rc8
11.Qd3 Be6
12.Ng5?

click for larger view

I think this is premature- unless he's got some really deep and specific calcultion "in hand" it seems like a free tempo for me-

12...0-0
13.Bg2 h6
14.d5??

click for larger view

Which drops a whole piece of course to

14...Ne5

Which I find but then I make a couple of potentially serious errors that might have cost me the whole game...

I find it extraordinarily difficult to bear down and find the best continuation after someone just gives away a piece like this. Doubtless, I will have to learn to do this better.

jessicafischerqueen: Position after I've just played

14...Ne5

click for larger view

15.Qb3 hxg5
16.dxe6 fxe6?

I played this virtually without thinking and look at the complications that arise from the Chess Gods to punish me for this insolent attitude-- Better was <16...d5>, because it gives me command of the <a2-g8> diagonal and pretty much snuffs out any immediate counterplay for White.

17.Qxe6+ Rf7?

click for larger view

I'm playing far too hastily and <17...Rf7> is just awful IMO- My idea here is arrange things so as to evict his Queen by playing <...Qd7>, but my text move was clumsy I think and led to problems in a few moves. Or, at least, they <seemed> like problems at the time.

18.h4 gxh4
19.Rxh4 Qd7
20.Bh3

click for larger view

Now here I got an unpleasant psychological shock- Once I realized that I couldn't profitably trade Queens=

Ie- <20...Qxe6 Bxe6> and I lose the exchange-

So I spent over 20 minutes calculating here- mainly seeing ghosts. I had an exaggerated "fear response" at this moment in the game- Totally without justification, it turns out. Even if I give up the exchange I'm a full piece up and winning in all variations unless I make an outright blunder.

But in "reality" I had to take a long break here- a long think- and I settled down enough to find a crushing continuation- although now that I'm analyzing, I can see that almost any move wins for Black-

But I <didn't> see that while playing- and this may be the most instructive point for me regarding this game.

20...Nd3+

click for larger view

And he played on for four moves before resigning this position-

21.Ke2 Nxc1+
22.Rxc1 Rxc1
23.Qxf7+ Kxf7
24.Bxd7 Nxd7

click for larger view

So to sum this up=

1. I played against the dreaded <Alapin> and didn't make any real mistakes in the Opening- I'm very happy about this because on <Yahoo> I used to get routinely creamed by <Alapin> players.

2. He gave me a piece for free and my job was then to win a won game.

3. I was relieved to have a won game so early, and played too quickly

4. He tried for active counterplay, which I overestimated and this caused me to start seeing ghosts and to seriously underevaluate my advantage.

5. I took a long, long think on move <20> and calmed down enough to pursue a winning continuation.

6. In analysis, only then did I realize that on move <20> ALL moves are winning continuations.

heh

LIVE AND LEARN I guess...

May-16-09  Eyal: <Jess> I think you're being a little too harsh on yourself with all those question marks you attach to your moves, especially in the later part of the game. Maybe you felt nervous and like you were missing things, but the actual moves played on the board, once you won the piece, were all basically ok (even if you could have been slightly more accurate here and there) and you never allowed your opponent real counterplay at any point.

In the opening, a6-b5 may have been a somewhat dubious conception - though I'm not sure at all about how things stand after 9.a4 b4 (and psychologically it's not easy to play a move like a4 immediately after playing a3 - but why did he play 8.a3 anyway, in the first place?). At any rate, your opponent's opening play was completely atrocious, so this time you weren't seriously "tested" in the Alapin. In fact, it was so bad - especially the awkward way he handled his queen - that even before he blundered the piece you had a tactical opportunity to gain a near-decisive advantage, after 11.Qd3:

click for larger view

Here 11...Be7 is perfectly good as a normal developing move, but even stronger is 11...Qa5! with the threat of ...Nb4! E.g. 12.Qc3 Qxc3 13.bxc3 Na5/e7 (or almost any other square, as long as it clears the diagonal for the bishop) and either c3 or e4 have to fall; or 12.Rb1 Ne5! 13.dxe5 Bxe4 winning material. But of course the tactics are not easy to see, especially when you're still thinking in opening - rather than middlegame - mode, so to speak. Also, as Bronstein once said, when your opponent blunders there's often no need to refute his move immediately, since it's only the prelude to an even worse blunder...

May-16-09  Woody Wood Pusher: Hey <JFQ>

Nice game!

I agree with <Eyal> (great analysis btw <Eyal>!) please don't feel the need to put question marks next to your moves after analyzing with a computer just because it doesn't think they are 'best'.

Chess is a human struggle, ultimately what wins, wins!

Plus I think you converted the win nicely.

It really is difficult to keep hold of the position once your opponent has blundered and mixed everything up.

Anybody who pretends winning every won game is easy is fooling themselves, you did just fine!

P.S.

How is the hustling tourists at blitz in Seoul coming along?

Nice game. I like the way you traded down to get your rook on the 7th rank. And the piece sac in the endgame is a great concept whether it's best or not.

Following the Opening Explorer (OE) or some opening database may show some improvements.

1. d4 d5 2. c4 e6 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. Bg5 c5

As you can see from the OE, Opening Explorer, 4...c5 is unusual but playable for black. In fact black seems to have better winning chances than the usual Be7.

(4... Be7 5. Nf3 h6 6. Bh4 O-O 7. e3 b6 8. Be2 Bb7 9. Bxf6 Bxf6 10. cxd5 exd5 11. O-O Qd6=)

5. e3

This is maybe too passive but it isn't a bad move. The more common 5. cxd5 has had more success.

(5. cxd5 cxd4 6. Qxd4 Be7

(6...Nc6 7. Qd2 exd5 8. Bxf6 Qxf6 9. Nxd5 Qd6 10. e4 )

I included so many moves in this variation because a lot of it is forced and it's just great fun.

Notice this position can be reached from the Caro-Kann, Panov-Botvinnik Attack. (1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. exd5 cxd5 4. c4)

I hope this helps you a little bit. You are getting stronger and I'm sure your great love of the game will carry you to greater heights.
