jessicafischerqueen: Your over there regimen sounds salubrious! Interestingly, in Canada we save time by spelling "music and poker" as "moker." Initially we spelled it "poomus" but that sounded a little too declasse, even for us...

Aug-21-09  Open Defence: so where is <Queen Hoot> these days ?
Aug-21-09  hms123: <deffi> She is in disguise in Vancouver.
Aug-21-09  Ragh: It could be possible that she forgot about the 64-squared board game.

And took up Checkers or Go or even Paragliding for a pastime.

Aug-27-09  Boomie: <achieve> Has anyone heard from Her Maj lately? This time last year she was chattering away from Vancouver. See page 419 on her forum for example. Have you emued her lately? Inquiring minds want to know. Also nosey ones like me.
Aug-27-09  SugarDom: Where is the queen? We are worried!
Aug-27-09  Ziggurat: Let the poor woman rest a while from cg.com and enjoy herself in Vancouver!
Aug-28-09  BishopofBlunder: What's so great about Vancouver? If it was any good they would have moved it out of Canada by now...
Aug-29-09  achieve: Well - I hope Jess is doing well and is working on a few "projects" she told me about a few weeks ago... bUt that's all I can say, really. Mum's the word...

So Hi <Jess>! - I'm up for some good chess study this fall season, and really just now am getting around to study (devour) Jesus de la Villa's Endgame book. (Rumour has it that <howard> already went through it 17 times..)

Here are a few quotes from the introductory chapter:

"Consequently [due to faster TC's and the elimination of adjournments], the analysis of contemporary endgames is more useful as <Laughter Therapy>, than as a chess lesson. But precisely due to that lack of time on the clock, a good command of basic endgames is even more necessary than ever."

"My main hypothesis is that most endgame books have been written as reference books, i.e., compiling and presenting knowledge without the least intention of explaining. Most such books cover the ground very rapidly, and thus provoke their readers to read them equally fast.

<That is why I have set out to explain the endings slowly, and I recommend their study to be slow as well.>"

Personally I can't wait to <go slow, study slow> - heh

As I said, I hope you're having a good time, and a reply to your emu (over-two-weeks-ago , doh) will be forthcoming. This weekend that is.

Niels

Aug-29-09  achieve: <Jess> Couldn't bear it any longer, as I noticed your emu from <three weeks ago>.... I got so sick of myself for the delay, that I immediately started thinking, and typing.

So one reply I attached/returned with your original emu, and I copied and sent a second with a new header, immediately after that.

At about 9am Yurp time, (London +1).

Still shaking my head here,
My deepest apologies.

Aug-29-09  PinnedPiece: <JFQ>I was born on a farm. I like this little story. Canadians do farms better than wars. We need people like that.

Three guys, a Canadian, Osama bin Ladin and Uncle Sam are out walking together one day. They come across a lantern and a Genie pops out of it. "I will give each of you each one wish, that's three wishes total," says the Genie. The Canadian says, "I am a farmer, my dad was a farmer, and my son will also farm. I want the land to be forever fertile in Canada." With a blink of the Genie's eye, 'POOF' the land in Canada was forever made fertile for farming. Osama bin Ladin was amazed, so he said, "I want a wall around Afghanistan, so that no infidels, Jews or Americans can come into our precious state." Again, with a blink of the Genie's eye, 'POOF' there was a huge wall around Afghanistan. Uncle Sam asks, "Before I wish, can you describe this wall for me?" The Genie explains, "Well, it's about 15,000 feet high, 500 feet thick and completely surrounds the country; nothing can get in or out---virtually impenetrable." Uncle Sam says, "Please...fill it with water."

:-}

Aug-30-09  hms123: <niels> I haven't gone through de la Villa's book 17 times, but I have gone through it about three times--it is really helpful and you will be amazed at how well his explanations work.
Aug-31-09  achieve: <it is really helpful and you will be amazed at how well his explanations work.> Yes - 'amazed' is the perfect description of my initial reactions, but then it is "get *to* work"...

But three times is very impressive; I'll take my time with each chapter, as recommended. But recycling like you do must be imperative to ingrain the crucial patterns in your mind.

My personal opinion is that the way De la Villa presents his material is even better than Aagaard's, actually.

  jessicafischerqueen: Well I'm back.

Thanks all for your very kind and funny messages--

I will reply to them all, though it seems it's taking me two months to do it.

I read and appreciated all of the posts, so don't think I'm ignoring any of you.

I'm jet lagged and cranky at the moment, so I might not post for awhile.

On the other hand, I may make 300 posts today, depending on the weather.

Looks sunny, warm, and pleasant here.

Ok back in a bit.

Sep-01-09  twinlark:

Nice to have you back. Seemed like you'd been vancouvered away. Then we'd have to <blame Canada>.

Sep-01-09  achieve: Welcome back <Jess>!

Small not zoo cryptoid message at my place.

Take it nice 'n easy.

Speaking of, yesterday I went on a little boat-trip, a rowing boat with a "silent engine", and zoomed my way through this idyllic protected nature area-- absolutely gorgeous weather... It felt so incredibly good, I can tell ya...

Enjoy the weather!

Sep-01-09  Open Defence: heh welcome back
Sep-01-09  Open Defence: from now on I am the <KIBITZER FORMERLY KNOWN AS HEH!>
Sep-01-09  malthrope: <jessicafischerqueen: Well I'm back.>

A hearty "Welcome BACK" Jess! :D

This place (such as it is) has decidedly *NoT* been the same without you!! :))

I've been staying close to home with the exception of little kibitz here and a little kibitz there (you get the general idea!). ;)

BTW: Not that you don't have enough to do scoring the perfect 300 postings while the weather is good... If you peruse my chessforum (when you have the 'time' of course) I've been posting some of my early games played as a teenager and Master Chess player (adult) that might just amuse you in the last few pages... :)

Best Always, - Mal

PS: <Open Defence: from now on I am the <KIBITZER FORMERLY KNOWN AS HEH!>>

Do we get to quote you as "HEH" now?

You with the stars in your eyes! :P ;)

Sep-01-09  hms123: <jess> I see that you have fired off the first salvo in the battle for critical thinking. I like it. You were quite clear.

"Clear" is a word that some of my friends and I use to mean something like "brutally honest" or "not mincing words." It is great fun, and usually rewards the thinking behind the clarity.

Sep-01-09  chessmoron: Welcome back <Batchimeg>!

<I'm jet lagged and cranky at the moment>

I'm guessing you flew back to South Korea from a good long stay in Canada. Right?

  jessicafischerqueen: Hi <McLovin>!!!

Yes, that's right.

Will you please open up your forum again so we can talk about Movies, Chicks, and Hoops?

It's not as if this is a chess site. You have left a big giant hole at the site by closing your forum.

Please come back!!!

jessicafischerqueen: Hey! It's <Labor Day> today and I can't work because I'm still in quarantine.

Does this mean I don't get to have <Labor Day> off now?

Oh wait a minute- I *am* off today, and for five more days.

heh
