  jessicafischerqueen: <anatoli>

Very close- but not quite. In his own words, <Kortschnoi> deliberately insists on this precise spelling of his name in the Roman alphabet- to emphasize that he belonged to no particular country. In other words, the transliteration of his name from cyrillic to roman letters would not normally be spelled this way.

This was part of his rebellion against the Soviet Chess system that treated him so unfairly- in his eyes.

jessicafischerqueen: <Mal> I'm trying to remember where I read the interview with <Viktor> in which he recounts how he "invented" the novel Romanized spelling of <Kortschnoi> as his form of rebellion-

I read it last year on the Net somewheres.

jessicafischerqueen: <Anatoli> hold off on my "correction" since I can't find the source I'm "remembering" about <Korch's> preferred Roman spelling.

On of my "corrections" yesterday turned out to be "incorrect," which is pretty embarrassing.

Sep-07-09  malthrope: <jessicafischerqueen: <Mal> I'm trying to remember where I read the interview with <Viktor> in which he recounts how he "invented" the novel Romanized spelling of <Kortschnoi> as his form of rebellion-

Jess - you know what Mal likes to say...

<"Never sweat the small stuff!">

Here's my two cents...

I have the same dilemma, trying to find stuff previously found or uncovered on the Internet. Thus, I just store it on top of the master shelf to ponder over later and get back to it from time to time... Maybe it will come to me, or maybe I'll discover where I hid it or viewed it last, etc.

My general feeling is to look at it this way that the basic ideas and concepts we pump out are generally good enough. It's not like we're writing dissertations here (although some can actually manage that and I applaud them for it). Besides, when people get too picky here it gets on my nerves! ~lol~ <nervous twitch of a grin> The 'romanized' story line as you presented it is just wonderful all by itself. :) It certainly places "Korch the Torch" one step higher in my book of rebellions. He's a true legend bar none. So, let's keep him that way! :^)

Best Always, - Mal

PS: I'll run this one by <DCP23> later as he may be able to assist adding a few new clues and keen insights. ;)

Sep-07-09  crawfb5: <“The leading Soviet players have won many fine victories. Their skill, the high quality of their play, their persistence, tactical abilities and will to win are all well known. Also well known are their modesty and openness. Unfortunate this cannot be said of grandmaster Geller. Having rendered considerable service to Soviet sport, he began to exaggerate this service and become conceited. This gave rise to a disdainful attitude toward his comrades and an unwillingness to consider their opinions.”

The passage was part of an editorial in the 12/1961
issue of Shakmaty v SSSR titled “The Moral Code of the Builder of Communism.” (source: Soviet Chess by D.J. Richards, p. 168).>

jessicafischerqueen: <Big Crawdaddy> I bet they were jealous that <Geller> kept thumping <Bobby> when others couldn't manage the same...

<Shakmaty> was one of <Bobby's> favorite publications- he taught himself enough Russian to read it, and he devoured every issue he could get his hands on.

He also read the other great Russian chess journal <64>.

Sep-07-09  A Karpov Fan: There are some questions better left unanswered, like <what cuts really go into my Big Mac ?> and now it seems we can add the correct spelling of The Korch to them.

Sorry to have opened up a can of worms there <jess> and <malthrope>. I was getting rather angry with my Mega Base when it kept returning no hits for The Korch tho.

Have you seen this website btw <jess>

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/va...

Sports Illustrated has some surprisingly good chess coverage in its vault.

okay its not as comprehensive as its NFL cheerleaders coverage, but priorities first -lol-

Sep-07-09  WBP: <Jess> Using the indispensable Chessgames.com database, let's see how the Big Four did against each other:

Geller vs. Keres +7 -10 =21
Geller vs. Korchnoi +6 -11 =15
Geller vs. Bronstein +5 -5 =15
Keres vs. Korchnoi +4 -1 =12
Keres vs. Bronstein +4 -8 =19
Bronstein vs. Korchnoi +7 -10 =16

So, what do we learn? First, they played each other a lot. Bronstein, it seems has the overall winning record--he beats Keres and Korchnoi and draws with Geller. Each of the others had a losing record agasint at least one: Keres loses to Bronstein, Geller loses to Keres and Korchnoi (but is the only one who can hold his own against Bronstein; and of course, we also have his enviable record against BF),and Korchnoi loses to Keres and Bronstein.

Of course, none of this takes into account the respective ages (which may well be a big factor here--some of the games date from the early fifties, when Geller and Korchnoi were just young 'uns, though I didn't look carefully at whether a large percentage of these early games were decisive against those two), the political situation facing the players (notably Korchnoi), the specific conditions of the individual games, and so forth.

But it's still interesting.

Three days in a row! Don't know how long I can keep this up! But I'm not going away again...at least not without kicking and screaming...

Sep-07-09  hms123: <jess. FYI--on the Fischer book: ChessBookForum chessforum
Sep-07-09  A Karpov Fan: <jess> have you heard the news...?

http://www.chessvibes.com/reports/m...

With Kasparov training Carlsen, anything is possible :-)

Maybe he will finally break from the pack and dominate now like a Fischer, or a Kasparov for that matter!

Richard Taylor: Jessica I won a game using a game played by Fischer - when he was playing Reshevsky he go him with e5 then Ne6 trap - Reshevsky played on but lost in about 30. My opponent resigned immediately. Then I was showing another player that game and talking about Fischer and the next day - at the tournament - it was announced Fischer had died!

jessicafischerqueen: <Anatoli> great article- thanks for the link. Amazing.

I wonder if it will be enough though...

I have a feeling that <Aronian> may get next crack at the title after <Banana v. Stop Love Forever>, however.

jessicafischerqueen: <Anatoli> will that <Sports Illustrated> link is flabbergasting.

The best part is that it's a "metalink" - I can just describe what the link is in my Profile (one hundred and three articles about Bobby Fischer!!!!) and then post just the one hyperlink, instead of 103 hyperlinks.

When I update my Profile with this invaluable link, I will accredit you in the usual fashion:

(courtesy of A Karpov Fan).

Unbelievable find.

Thanks is not enough for this one.

But THANKS anyway!!!!

Sep-08-09  A Karpov Fan: I'm pleased you liked those links <jess>.

I was also surprised by the Sports Illustrated chess coverage when I first saw it.

<I have a feeling that <Aronian> may get next crack at the title>

Yes I would tend to agree with you here, his FIDE GP results are fantastic, but as for his shirts; well they don't allow parapsychologists on a player's team anymore so...-lol-

<after <Banana v. Stop Love Forever>, however.>

<Banana>?... OMG you mean the 15th World Chess Champion Anand -lol-

I wouldn't try to get his signature calling him that, but on the internet, somehow it is okay. Might even catch on :-)

thanks

malcolm

Sep-08-09  crawfb5: "Efim Geller, the father of the King's Indian"

http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail...

Here's the Havana game mentioned:

Geller vs Velimirovic, 1971

I understand there is an unauthorized biography of EG in the works code-named <Old Geller>, but that might just be a translation error.

Sep-08-09  chessmoron: <Jess> It looks like Kevin Macdonald (director of The Last King of Scotland-my fav 06 film) is directing "Bobby Fischer Goes to War" based on the book which is about the 1972 World Chess Championship in Reykjavik, Iceland, in which Bobby Fischer took on the entire Soviet chess establishment. http://www.filmstalker.co.uk/archiv...
Sep-08-09  suenteus po 147: Hmmm...a movie based on Bobby Fischer Goes to War? Can't wait! But who should be cast as Fischer? And Spassky?
Sep-08-09  hms123: <jess> Do you mind asking <boz> if we can post his review of Reti's book (given in his header, but I copied it) at the CBF? (see his comment there)
Sep-09-09  WBP: Hey <Jess>. I'm not quite sure what you meant by the typo or error in the Big Four Against Each Other record I posted. I don't quite see what you're referring to (these old eyes!).

I need your help!!!

Sep-09-09  WBP: <Jess> Just caught it! Whereas I'd said (correctly) that <Korchnoi loses to Keres and Bronstein>, I reversed the order of names in the list. It SHOULD HAVE been: Korchnoi vs Bronstein +7 -11 =16

Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

  jessicafischerqueen: <McLovin and Suenteus po>

There's an extended discussion about a "new Fischer" film on the <Fischer page> a few months back-

If it is indeed the same film-

And who should play the characters.

If it is the same film, it looks terrible based on the trailer.

But I have a feeling this might be a new production you guys are referring to---

I hope so anyways.

Sep-09-09  A Karpov Fan: I think it would be possible to make a good Fischer movie just using some computer wizardy and a few select scenes of Rocky IV

Edit in Fischer and Spassky's heads and a chess board and...

:-)
