jessicafischerqueen: I realize this is horrifyingly late- but

<Pinned Piece> thank you for that funny joke about Canada

<hovik>- re: the <youtube analyses> of <Fischer> games in my profile-

Yes, I love them too. And more will be made as time goes on.

<Madly Deeply> I laughed at every one of your posts and your links- I miss you madly deeply and really wish you would get a forum again.

Sorry for taking two months to respond to your kind letters, gentlemen.

Oh and thanks to <ragh>, <bishop of blunder>, and <ziggy> for popping up with your usual zesty selves as well.

Richard Taylor: [Event "New Zealand Reserve 2008"]
[Site "Auckland. NZ"]
[Date "2008.01.16"]
[Round "2"]
[White "Richard Taylor"]
[Black "Neil Cruden"]
[Result "1-0"]

1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 g6 5. Bc4 Bg7 6. Be3 Nf6 7. Nc3 O-O 8. O-O a6 9. Bb3 Na5 10. e5 Ne8 11. Bxf7+ Kxf7 12. Ne6 1-0

My opponent was wiser than Reshevsky!! Reshevsky was a great player of course though - and a fighter... had he studied in chess more - hard to say he wasn't actually more naturally (or as =lly) talented than Fischer..who could tell. he didn't ever have the deep knowledge that Fischer had of all the latest opening in nuances. (And some of Fischer's moves in certain openings are now known to be wrong.)

I won this game, won my second with a sacrifice - then I kind of collapsed and played a lot of bad games ...

When I was to talk about this game - i said - I have a game example that is "quicker than the Universe"! I knew that Fischer also found that idea in Shakmaty. It's in a book I have about Fischer. I have quiet few including a bio etc and "Searching for Bobby Fischer" (a great book)...

My father got Fischer FIRST book (I still have it, he annotates it well) by the way...at that Time Tal was World Champion and he was my hero! And he was good but sadly had kidney trouble...

Richard Taylor: Also an IM who was playing in the same tournament there - came and gave a lecture on Fischer's method with the Sozin...he had met Fischer when he was in South America once...

Mind you "method" depends on cooperation from black!

Years ago I asked this strong chess player here if Fischer was really so good - that maybe he was an "idiot savant" as he looked - in some pictures - a bit simple - to me! But this person said he watched him play and noticed the concentration and the enormous alertness in his eyes...

Sep-10-09  achieve: <Jess> Repost from Deffi's re: The Schooling of Caruana by Big Al --

TIP to all: Go and visit <Open Defence chessforum>, where you will find a link to a very good video annotation by <kingscrusher>

So again, <Jess>:

EXCELLENT recommendation!

Very, very very fine play by Beljavsky, with the rook incursion, the subtle but soo powerful Qc1!! - the simple f4 there at the end...

I'd say perfect chess, and in a higher sense Caruana was indeed lost after twelve, and than got "stuffed"...

The bursting into laughter by KC at about 7.10 is hilarious (and catchy!), and nice to see on a YT vid. But I think he's done quite a few by now, so he's more "freed up" - heh

Sep-10-09  achieve: ...

And it's indeed easier to paste the hyperlink to the video here as well:

Sep-10-09  achieve: <Richard Taylor> Devious trap!!

I didn't know of this sac in this line, though I played a similar sac in a correponcence game recently, but was made to sweat quite a bit before i could bag the full point...

And thanks for sharing the anecdote as well!

Young Fischer had that fixation; alertness personified.

Sep-10-09  achieve: Interestingly, playing on from the resigned position from <Richard>'s game, against Rybka at full strength, I felt forced to give back the exchange, in order to open some lines, and break the Black position open, so my Queen would get some more space in which to operate...

Pos after 22. h3 Bf5-e6

And here I played Rxd6 - to follow it by snapping off the e-pawn with tempo, and we get this position:

After which it took me another <30> moves to make certain of the win.

Not "easy" by any means, and very good practise!

Sep-10-09  crawfb5: <Jess the Archivist> I know it will be a while before you launch your new project. Just thought I'd let you know I decided to make a temporary Geller games collection as a spot to store links and info so you don't have to dig back through your forum in case you're looking for something.

I was tempted to call it <Old Geller>, but it's too sad to think about when they finally had to shoot him at the end...

Thanks. Interesting re Rybka - actually my position is slightly different to the Fischer gaem but he principle is same...unfortunately for my opponent - and this was the only game he lost - he didn't have Rybka beside him!

Richard Taylor: Here's game involving Ponomariov's Gambit in the Taimanov, Bastrikov - I know this opening fairly well now as I studied it then beat an FM about 1 month ago - but I didn't know this variation - it didn't arise as I didn't (in the game I played) play the Nb5 lines... It's not a trap as such but it is useful to know. As in the Rybka analyse above, it gets unclear as to who is better. My old Fritz thinks the line is o.k. for white but you may find something on Rybka... You probably know it if you play correspondence chess as Nickel won a games White with it...

I used to play a lot of correspondence chess...

Sep-11-09  A Karpov Fan: <jess> there is a brilliant 10 min off the cuff interview with Kasparov here (he's on a train -lol-)

http://www.chessninja.com/dailydirt/

He says Carlsen is a player in the style of Smyslov, Capablanca and Karpov and this is what makes his partnership potentially so rewarding for the kid.

Also, a great line (I might even put it in my profile), concerning his own up and coming match...

<Karpov is just a shadow of what he was before, but nevertheless still a very dangerous shadow>

-lol-

Sounds melodramatic, but judging from this latest pic I think Kaspy is spot on...

  jessicafischerqueen: <A Karpov Fan>

Thanks again for such interesting links and news-

So <Kasparov> and <Karpov> are going to play a match?

Really?

I'm not sure how I feel about that.

Seems much more similar than different than the <Fischer-Spassky> rematch.

You know, the one most wish never happened.

BTW, I posted your fantastic Bobby "metalink" at the top of the "Articles" section of my Profile as well.

Sep-12-09  boz: <You know, the one most wish never happened.>

I don't know <jessica> I'm glad he played. It got him out of poverty for one thing. He played at least one very fine game. Defeating the number 50 player after a 20-year absence is not bad. And finally, it must have felt good to play again after all those years.

jessicafischerqueen: Those are very good points <boz>-

I wasn't thinking of it from <Bobby's> perspective, but rather from my perspective as a fan.

Maybe he would have felt even better playing on after the rematch-

Like so many other great players- <Kortschnoi, Karpov, Beliavsky, Timman>, and many more still playing competitive chess and still enjoying very high ratings in comparison to the rest of the world's GMs-

People who live for chess should play chess.

I think you are right about your point.

Sep-12-09  boz: I'm still waiting for the Lilienthal-Smyslov match.

Lilienthal must be the only one alive who has played Lasker and Capablanca. Smyslov didn't but saw them play in Moscow when he was a boy. He said Lasker was very intense and never left the board.
