 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Niels> I dare you to do it- I was just thinking today that <onto> doesn't actually reply to anyone. I believe he may be a force of nature- possibly not even a human. Do you think I'm kidding? |
|
| Oct-05-09 | | hms123: <jess> If you look back at <Switch's> recent post about openings, middlegames, and endings, you will see that he ranks the importance in the opposite direction (e, m, o). That's why I always studied endings, and middlegames, and then played closed openings so I wouldn't have to worry about tricks and traps before the game even got started. Even if my opponents gained a slight advantage early, they weren't often good enough to drive it home without allowing me some chances in the middlegame. Once I had the advantage, I headed for the endgame quickly. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: I loved- and miss- <Lasker-Keres-Reshevsky> very much. This place is impoverished by his absence.
What a wonderful man- with such a rich sense of humor and humanity. |
|
| Oct-05-09 | | achieve: I concur wholeheartedly with Jess, as can be read from the thread of the above link onwards, where <Bill> as well as <Dom> connect with his "humanity." |

| Oct-05-09 | | dakgootje: <Ironically, <laskereshevsky> was/is from Italy, and he used <excessive> punctuation, remember? But <the same> lyrical, semi-intellectual, phonetic at times- vocabulary... My bet is he is Italian> As much as both have a very distinct manner of writing, I wouldn't say onto is Italian due to the way of punctuation use. The little I've read of LKR it seemed to have a function to lead the reader in reading the text the way and speed it was meant to be read. Like a stream of conscious-piece where the long and winding sentences are often used to mark speed, falling from one idea into another and the '....' as where the writer takes a moment to pause for the next line. Onto seems to use the lack of punctuation more like a figure of speech, to aid in the chaotic union of seemingly random gibberish (no, don't know if that makes sense either). The word-usage -and puns and synonyms- got me to think more of a native English speaker with a preference to use words (carapace) and combinations that sound alien to most ears. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <dak> your reasoning seems sound, and your theory may be correct. However, I think the mystery may be even deeper. I don't think he's an English speaker, but I don't really have an argument, and certainly no hard evidence. I don't think <onto> will reveal his "sources." Interestingly, he has captured the wary eye of <frogbert>- I don't know that <frogbert> will be of any help in getting to the bottom of this- although possibly he may be able to figure out <onto's> "Live Rating." |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: How ever the mystery is resolved- or is not resolved- I am convinced that <ontocaustic> is a poetic genius- and perhaps more... |
|
| Oct-05-09 | | dakgootje: < I don't think he's an English speaker, but I don't really have an argument, and certainly no hard evidence.> Admittedly, my feeling was that he wasn't native English... But it just didn't seem to hold up... intriguing personae for sure. |

| Oct-05-09 | | Eyal: <I was just thinking today that <onto> doesn't actually reply to anyone.> I think that on rare occasions he sort of does, but then it only generates some more refreshingly surreal poetry: <how can carlparow draws this when he could have used it towards his victory march which ends with the World Championship, he has no blood in this game and its true that someone like short would have done a lot worse but the carlsparow need to make a name before himself as one to inspire the fear that puts the plaque on the wall and lances through the true spirit of the times instead we get a bloodless draw may kasparow should threaten to not give him chess lessons if he draws then he will win all the time because he will not draw> <Pjalle: <ontocaustic> Going for a draw was the right thing to do. The point is to win the tournament and the 80.000 euro first price [etc. etc. - some boring rational stuff]> <we understnands it and kasparow if he is here can opens his ears to listen to a plea to not give lesson to carlson when he draws against the weak player but not as weak as short but still weak like topalov and others it is a sad day when we see draw from the boy genuis pillar of chessmetric understand who will one day go on to conquer the silken beast it is because it shakes all of our hopes that kasparow should enquire into his progidy> |

| Oct-05-09 | | hms123: <A Karpov Fan> Cute position--but one that should be well-known. |

You certainly know your chess, thanks for taking the time to show me this. regards

| Oct-06-09 | | achieve: <A Karpov Fan> <dakgootje> Check this one out! Even the arguably Greatest Ever - <G Kasparov> - "fell" for this stalemate "trick" in a real tournament game.... !!?? (I'll post the link to that game later)

<dak> please clock the solving time for this one ;) <howard> is not allowed to post the solution, as I posted this already at his forum, some months ago....;) |

| Oct-06-09 | | crawfb5: I think you should let Howard have your new forum name. Then he would be <Dr. Zeus, The Cat in the Hat>. |

| Oct-06-09 | | crawfb5: <jessicafischerqueen: that's right- kick a girl when she's down-- I can't stop laughing....> There's no better time to kick her. She can't kick back. Just wait until Howard starts regaling you with stories of Talhalla, the final destination of pieces sacrificed in battle. He will, you know. A Norse is a Norse, of course, of course... |
