  jessicafischerqueen: I LOVE KOREA

heh

Hi Ho everyone! I've been downtown for two days/nights "Halloween partying" with my friends so I haven't had a chance to catch up with correspondence.

I went to "work" on Friday only to find that the students all had to write a "surprise government test" so I had no duties and could go home.

heh-

THREE DAY WEEKEND

Luckily, tomorrow I will be able to answer all of your kind messages and listen to all of the fine media you have shared as well.

I may be back a bit later tonight- I've just come through the door and I've some stoats to polish and a few other household duties before settling in to watch one of the 500 horror films I've been downloading.

HAPPY HALLOWEEEN WEEK ALL WEEK LONG THAT'S RIGHT MATES WICKED PARANORMAL ACTIVITY AND PHOTOS ALIENS GHOSTS BURROS YOU NAME IT

Oct-24-09  A Karpov Fan: I left a small Fischer related story at <malthrope>'s place <Jess>, you might like it too tho :-)
Oct-24-09  Travis Bickle: M'Lady some Halloween costume ideas. I could see myself going presidential, or swine flu would be a crowd pleaser... On second thought maybe the gorilla in the commercial before the clip! ; P

Oct-24-09  achieve: Just to keep you and <everyone else> busy (back to chess- there's nothing quite like it):

Black has just played <15 Ra8-b8>

click for larger view

White to play and win spectacularly

From J Friedel vs M De Jong, 2009 - at this week's now completed Open Section, Hoogeveen, 2009 (Doh!).

Friedel is a US citizen btw - do not be fooled by the "german-sounding" name. J for Joshua. He effectively pulled <De Jong> through the wringer here. "Schlachtung" (massacre).

Oct-24-09  everyone else: This is the best kind of "chess puzzle" because it's not actually a puzzle- It's fiendish. If you come to this problem thinking it's a puzzle- a position with a dashing killer blow- you are likely to spend the next two hours trying to make <16.Rxf7+??> work.

It doesn't, of course.

So what is White's <strongest continuation>?

16.Rxf7+ Kxf7
17.White Queen must move and attack is dead, since Black can "cover up" his king with his knight.

Viz, 17.Qf1+ would be a useless continuation in this line.

16.Ra8? looks sexy, ganging up on the Black Rook and offering a Queen trade, but after this trade White has no crushing blow- Also, Black can even refuse the Queen trade and just move his rook off the <b-file> with no harm done.

So

16.Ra7!!!

Looks promising with the immediate threats of Raxf7+ or Rfxf7+.

Of these, Raxf7+ is best because after

17.Raf7+ Ke8
18.Rf8+ wins the Queen

However, after

16.Ra7!, it's Black's move so he has two defensive tries-

16.Ra7 Nf6 or f6

16.Ra7 f6? is no good because of

17.Qg5!!!

Look how beautiful that would be for White-

click for larger view

Thanks to the VICIOUS PIN on Black's f6 pawn, Black must surrender material to stave off mate.

Let's be honest here-in a 5/0 game with Black, how many of us might have played <16...f6?> here without much thought?

Blitz IS NOT CHESS. Any more than riding your bicycle around your street is the same as competing in the Tour de France.

CASE CLOSED.

Ok back to the story.

If

16.Ra8 Nf6 looks forced

So

16.Ra8 Nf6
17. Rxf6!!!!!!

Exchange sac for attack looks to me to be the best try for white here.

click for larger view

Now, if

17...Rxb5, Rfxf7+!!!

click for larger view

17...Ke8 (or Kg8- doesn't even matter)
18.Nxb5!

click for larger view

And with the connected Rooks on the 7th plus the roving Knight ready to jump in, Black has no chance to avoid being mated without giving up his Queen, ultimately.

If Black tries

17.Rxf6 gxf6

click for larger view

Then 18.Qh5!! looks crushing, with the tasty threat of Mate in One.

BTW, we have been aware of the very fine new AMERICAN Grandmaster <Joshua Friedel> for a year now- we have posted several of his extremely fine video annotations of his games at this website.

They can be found at <chessvideos.com>, same place as <Greg Shahade> and <Dennis Rhinocerous>.

  jessicafischerqueen: <Big Thor>

I had to move your post here to keep the attempted answer to the chess problem connected to the problem.

Don't get me wrong- I don't really care what everyone else thinks, but they do appear to have tried to answer the problem at least.

<Thorski: <Jess> Meh. Wish we celebrated Halloween... Have you brandished your Shun paring knife yet?>

Oct-24-09  notyetagm: For another example of the tactical idea underlying Aronian's brilliant 37 ♖c6-g6!, in my Game Collection: If only I could move my pawn *DIAGONALLY*, consider the following:

  ChessBookForum: Trick or Treat!

Oh, and fear me.

Oct-25-09  Thorski: <jess> Fie! You shouldn't have airlifted my post. Like Indiana Jones when he attempted to remove the gold idol from its pedestal in that cave in the Peruvian jungle, so too will you come to regret this!
Oct-25-09  Thorski: <jess> A queen sac by Ra7 was my first inclination, and if Black accepts, the position quickly simplifies to an easily won endgame for White. So I put the problem away.

I didn't really look at the lines following Nf6, but they're very interesting! Not sure they're objectively better for Black though. Then again, when every alternative is losing, perhaps "better" is a secondary consideration.

NEGATORY MATE-

That's not the idear of these problems.

The instructive training point is to try to visualize the line to the end of the game, even if that involves spending the rest of your life on it.

He who sees the furthest ahead wins a REAL chess game.

you know the kind where you have hours instead of minutes on your clock.

Which brings us to the curious phenomenon of people who play 7 days a move Correspondence chess and make all their moves in ten seconds.

It is that all too common practice that allowed me to garner a HIGHLY INFLATED 2100+ Correspondence rating before I swore off it altogether, citing "mental problems" as an excuse.

(Good job on spotting a good move quickly however- hats off- I agree that it is a very strong, even winning, move)

Oct-25-09  Open Defence: my favourite quote about Alekhine

<Alekhine is a poet who creates a work of art out of something that would hardly inspire another man to send home a picture post card. >

Oct-25-09  Thorski: <JFQ> The last few episodes of The Office have been fantastic. They keep upping the ante. Loved the mallard. Just had to share my enthusiasm with a fellow devotee.

Oct-28-09  Pyke: Hi <Jess>

just wanted to say hello and "EVIL BOTVINNIK'S BACK!!!".

I am sorry, because I am somewhat late, but I recall, that you mentioned ALIENS some days ago - I think at Howards.

You know I am a big fan of the Trilogy (Trilogy, there are only three of them, there is NO fourth. God bless the French).

I am curious as which part is your favourite? I wonder whether you wrote ALIENS with the meaning of

a) the multiple movies in general , or

b) with special reverence to the second one. (I hope it's clear what I am trying to say ...) P.S.: Carrie Henn has to be one of the best child actors ever!

I'd probably go with the first one, but the choice is tough, since all of them have their unique style.

Pyke

P.S.: Sorry for spamming your forum ... once again!

Oct-29-09  A Karpov Fan: Aliens is the film that made me afraid of my own heart-burn.

good stuff
