Dec-02-09  crawfb5: <H> Not to mention a <real> typewriter doesn't need a power source. Somebody was telling me about a couple of the Kindle clones that are out or in the pipeline. One apparently needs a Wifi connection to work Kindle only needs to be connected to actually download the text, not to read.

I like gadgets as much as the next guy, but only if I find them useful. When someone tries to hand me a cell phone, I look at them as if they've just crawled out from under a rock. OTOH, you'll get my wireless router only by prying it out of my dead, stiff fingers...

I figured out what was going on with the iPod and the mystery posts. It's a loaner, so I was surfing as an unregistered guest to see how well it would work. Of course I'd forgotten I'd changed some of the defaults in my preferences for my account, so while I normally see the most recent posts at the <top> of the page, the default is for the most recent posts at the <bottom> of the page.

As is common, it turned out to be a <loose nut> at the controls...

jessicafischerqueen: I find the idea of a "kindle" revolting.

What about browsing a used bookstore and whiffing all of that moldy paper?

Smells like... knowledge....

Also, you really want to feel the paper in your hands. And suppose you want to throw the book against the wall?

Well, you can.

You can throw them at people too! I know because I"ve done it.

Also, if people stop acting as tree predators, the trees will multiply out of control and all die of starvation.

Dec-03-09  crawfb5: Don't worry, I have no intention of getting a Kindle, at least not at anything like the current pricing. They're not even good for kindling, which is yet another advantage to real books.

Besides, many of the kinds of things I like to read are not going to be kindle-kind of material anyway.

The problem is Doreen is slowly turning into her mother, who starts the "what do you want for Christmas" drumbeat about mid-November. I have to try to steer Doreen away from gadgets that have a poor cost/use ratio. Suggestions to put aside the money for the (fill in the blank) fund are not usually successful.

  jessicafischerqueen: <Big Crawdaddy>

What a stunning coincidence- I don't know if you've been following the info I've been feeding <Howard> on the internet pranksters from <4chan>-

<Eric Bauman>, the founder of the <ebaumsworld> website, pranked the official <Epilepsy Foundation> website while he was a hacker from <7chan>, another similar message board.

"ebaum" and his <7chan> buddies hacked on to the site and spammed a bunch of flashing strobe <gifs> in the site's subforums that caused a number of the visitors to go in to epileptic seizures. The Foundation has since installed maximum strength spam guards and other security measures.

The <ebaum's world> website is no longer owned or run by <Eric Bauman>-and in the end no one could prove that he organized this "spam raid," but it's widely believed in the "chanosphere" that he was the orignator.

The raid itself was organized on <7chan>= the messages have been archived. I've read them in fact. But all the names of the posters are the same-- <Anonymous>-- so nothing was proven in the end.

It's nice to know that our teens had helpful hobbies before deciding to grow up and make millions selling useless crap on the internets, and then selling the websites to make even more money.

What an alarming coincidence this was- I almost fell out of my chair when I clicked on your link and recognized that it was <Bauman's>.

The horror...

Dec-03-09  hms123: <jess> <http://www.expensive_CRAP.org>;

heh--you got me.

Dec-03-09  crawfb5: I've only been half-following your journeys into cyber-surrealism. The Bauman coincidence was just that.

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

jessicafischerqueen: <zarg>- yes, I think he layed in the weeds for Chairman- the wily old veteran taught a few chess lessons.

All credit to <Malakhov>- if he had lost, Chairman would have been the only surviving player under 2700.

I don't check my cg.com EMU that often, so when you send me an EMU be sure to post in my forum

Dec-03-09  Thorski: Pardonnez-moi, Madame. Je ne l'ai pas fait exprès.

Now bring back the Chairman! I hate the limelight. (Though the song by Rush is fantastic: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mwi... - Canadians. Your peeps.)

  jessicafischerqueen: <Geddy Lee>

heh

Yes, all Canadians have a soft spot for <Geddy>, largely due to his habit of performing in a Toronto Maple Leafs jersey.

My favorite <Geddy> tune is "Tales of Tom Sawyer."

Dec-04-09  achieve: <Jess> small emu at your place.
Dec-04-09  Thorski: <Jess><Giddy> Aw, I can tell you're not a <real> fan. But yeah, Tom Sawyer's a great song. Most of their catalogue is excellent - YYZ, Spirit of the Radio, Temples of Syrinx, 2112, The Camera Eye, Red Barchetta, The Trees, &c.,&c.

<Futurama> has numerous Rush references, the most prominent being Fry's <It's Saturday night; I've got no date, a two liter bottle of Shasta, and my all-Rush mix tape.> before saving Earth from Space Invaders. :D Too bad it got cancelled, and that the straight-to-DVD films all sucked.

Have you always had the Marie Antoinette avatar? I paraphrased her just for you. The French guillotined people well into the sixties and seventies (when, incidentally, Rush had their heyday).

jessicafischerqueen: <Thor: Not just another day of the week>

Yes, quite right- That is not my favorite kind of pop music.

But it's also right that no Canadian will ever admit they don't like Rush or Geddy.

He is a symbol for Canada, like the Beaver and throwing old people out in the street to die.

Yes and no- I picked this avatar first, and it was <Eyal> who figured out it was Marie- it was painted by <Nigel St. Exupery di Titto> or something like that.

But I also was a golden sphinx, Carrie Ann Moss, a Cartoon Owl, and a Really Fat Guy with Glasses Shouting.

Luckily, the Marie Avatar is so lame nobody else will ever grab it.

But I"m not letting it go- If I want to change the main avatar, I'm not doing it without stashing Marie on a second preemy account.

I'm going to get two new preemy accounts on my Birthday-

I have some secret deplorable projects in mind.

jessicafischerqueen: blloody space bar-- can I get a new one? Either I've pounded the spring into my floor or there are some dead ants underneath it.

Neither scenario sounds good to me.

Stupid spaces

Dec-05-09  Thorski: <golden sphinx, Carrie Ann Moss, a Cartoon Owl, and a Really Fat Guy with Glasses Shouting>

That's a rather troubling regression, and now you look like you're about to lose your head. I will stay tuned for the thrilling denouement

<prim & preened> When's your bday? I'll hook you up with a stash house, for a gander at your <diabolical plan>.
