| Dec-13-09 | | Travis Bickle: I dont know if its great comedy but there's some funny characters. It's sort of like Mad TV. In Living Color was Jim Carrey's first show before he became a movie star. Also interesting is the fact that JLO got her start on that show as a "fly girl", that is a dancer way before she was a big star! Here's a few episodes to see if you like the zany humor. Here's another Fire Marshal Bill. ; P

To reply:
The <National Front> is a fascist political party in Britain that campaigns on the "one issue" platform of banning all non-caucasian immigration. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Britis...
Here is a brief account of the main argument in <Anti-Semite and Jew>- you can also buy it at Amazon http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-S...
Briefly, Sartre begins with an historical portrait of Nazi Anti-Semitism and then moves to a broader psycho-social explanation of racism and intolerance in general. He characterizes racism as a perversion of passion, and an unwillingness to take responsibility for the "I"- for one's own individuality-- and for one's personal responsibilities to the "thou"- to other people. The Wikipedia entry is actually quite good IMO, but the entire text is well worth reading- Sartre delves in to all forms of racism and discrimination, including the "battle of the sexes" as I was mentioning. Again- my apologies for directing anger in your direction due to my mistaken belief that you had already read <Jane Eyre's> posts on the page. You and I have always shared good relations at this site in the past, and I hope in continues that way. I must say you are an extraordinarily patient person. |

| Dec-14-09 | | visayanbraindoctor: Interesting article <jessicafischerqueen>. From what I understand, Sartre is saying that anti-Semitism comes from passion and emotion, and thus irrational. Neurologically, emotion comes from our so-called 'reptilian brain', a primitive part of our telencephalon called the limbic system, located DEEP in our cerebral hemispheres. We share this portion of the brain with reptiles and birds (birds are now classified in the same clade as reptiles by the way). It is where our instincts and emotions arise. On the other hand, rationality is a function of out cerebral cortex, the COVERING of the cerebral hemispheres. In brief, passion and rationale thoughts are located on different areas of the brain. Unfortunately while there are a lot of outgoing connections from the limbic system to the cerebral cortex - that is from the emotional part of the brain to the rationale part - there are few connections from the cortex to the limbic system. This means that it is far easier for emotions to influence rationality; passion more often than not dictates to reason. Note that if a person gets angry, he or she cannot just tell the limbic system to stop firing. Such an order comes from the cortex, and there are few connections that travel from the cortex to the limbic system. Furthermore, the limbic system has closed circuit connections. Once some neuronal cell bodies in it fire, the electro-chemical signals tend to travel round and round the limbic system. It's why it's almost impossible to control being in a state of hate or being in love for that matter, and these states can last for a long long time. On the other hand, the more numerous connections from the limbic system to the cortex continue transmitting signals; thus hate or love can and do affect our thinking processes very easily. The peculiar thing is that we often are very much aware of our passions; yet out thinking rationale part cannot control them because of limited connections to the brain area from which the passions arise. If Sartre is right, the tendency for racism is essentially a function of our 'reptilian brain'. Difficult to control by conscious rationale effort. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <visayan> this is an interesting evolutionary angle to add to these ideas. It seems like an unfortunate neural arrangement the way you describe it- and yet we can understand why this arrangement may have been selected for. When it's time to hit the tiger in the face with a pointed stick, there is no time to waste with "thinking" about it. The adrenaline has to shoot from the fear/hate/kill brain stem or the poor caveman dies and fails to reproduce. I think cultural "evolution", or change, has outpaced biological evolution, which requires millions of years for change. Nowadays, we don't really need to worry about tigers leaping at us out of every street corner- and yet our brains are still wired, as you say, so that the limbic connection to the cortex is more persuasive to action than is the cortex connection to the limbic system. I don't think it's a coincidence that one of Hitler's favorite aphorisms was "action over ideas". |

| Dec-14-09 | | visayanbraindoctor: Very nice way of putting it.
Oh, I am supposed to be of Asian-Malay stock, as most Filipinos, but I look more like Chinese or Japanese. Maybe I could pass myself off as Korean as well if I avoid the sun for two months.(",) So I must have had come Chinese ancestors. However, the only foreigner in my family that I know of for sure is the Grandpa of my Grandmother; he was half Norman (French) and half Spanish more or less. Gotta run to work. |
