Feb-05-10  achieve: Yes, <Keres>' eyes and concentrated, deeply focused stare and controlled energy and superior (oh my) facial features had me captivated too through your zoom-in stills... I do have a question and remark or two, but as I said, much better to just let you work things out- and remember- when you are tired, and being the perfectionist you are, you will never be satisfied. That's not worth it. This is incredibly crafted and difficult stuff to mix, time, and master.

So why not stand on shoulders of Giants, and rehash some of the material that's already outthere???

It's not like you have much choice, as you explained, and who's gonna judge and compare?

No-one. This is you doing it, and making it, within a ten minutes framework.

Brrrrrr - quite a challenge.

Feb-05-10  Russian Grandmasters: Heh-

Well the thing is, you can make a youtube film in as many parts as you like-

So I could make a 200 hour film series on Bobby.

I'm going to try a few things with him and I have some "loopy experimental" ideas--

I think a "traditional" two parter in the same vein as the three chess movies I made so far, for the Profile here.

Then I can make some crazy ones.

There's so much information about Bobby- and so many, many images-

That you could make a film on any angle.

I was a bit worried about a letter I got from youtube warning that the Keres soundtracks "may violate an existing WGM copyright agreement," but I know all about this issue.

I got the mildest forum of announcement-

"No action need be taken" they said.

They said

1. Nothing might happen

2. They might put some ads on the films

3. If anything else, they'd contact me first with my options

You see all that <Wim Mertens> music- and that's all I used- is on a lot of popular soundtrack records that WGM owns the rights to.

But I'm not really worried.

Here's what youtube does in the "extreme" WGM cases-

1. Permanently suspend your account

2. Disable the audio from your video (in this case you can use the "audioswap" feature to put in a new soundtrack)

3. Just delete your video

4. Not allow the video to be uploaded in the first place.

It all depends on the artist in question. In the case of <Genesis>, they are super strict and at least 8 youtube channels I used to subscribe to for the Genesis music have been permanently suspended.

Also, I've tried to upload Genesis songs= even obscure ones, live versions not under any copyright-

And there's a filter that prevents them from being uploaded.

This is because Genesis has been reissuing a lot of material-

Also I don't blame the band because they toured constantly for a good 15 years without making any money at all- poor record sales.

For well over a decade they might have been the "poorest famous band" in the world.

Ok then.

I found 24 Geller images so far.

Feb-05-10  Travis Bickle: Jess did you see the film Rachel Getting Married? The movie is a powerful drama! Anne Hathaway is really great in this movie!

Here's a song from the soundtrack
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLER...

Feb-05-10  hms123: <jess> I liked Keres: part 2. I think my favorite shot was around 4:38 (right after the map with the Riga tournament) because that picture seems to show Keres at a time when he understands he will never be WC. You can almost see it in his face. Nice job!
Feb-05-10  Travis Bickle: Jess is your other chess film on Keres that you wantd me to see?
Feb-06-10  achieve: <I was a bit worried about a letter I got from youtube warning that the Keres soundtracks "may violate an existing WGM copyright agreement,"> Surprising, Jess.... Luckily you've got it all covered now and know exactly what you can do-- but I'm just surprised to have seen e.g. <Sinatra>-clips stand for months on end, heavily copyrighted material.... And you get a letter from "them" within a few days?

???

Who are "they"?

Either way, I'm glad you have it all basically worked out, and can freely work on <"loopy experimental" ideas--> heh

Feb-06-10  achieve: Hey You! - Busy making films huh?

I was just going over a few <Geller gems> - and caught this one, where a "ripe old Geller" wipes the floor in 22 with a young hot shot Elexei Dreev:

Geller vs Dreev, 1990

Very interesting line in the French/Tarrasch, where White obtains an IMO HUGE lead in development after just <7>!! moves of Theory: Pos after 7. 0-0 Bd6

click for larger view

Of course Black may have compensation but with white to play here he immediately works at the pawns and thus blow up the center basically, with b3 & a4 - the thematic approach...

Funny thing is that Giant Geller played this exact same opening five years prior, in 1985, and "did" his opponent in 22 as well-- I guess Dreev had his punishment coming...

I'd personally like to examine this opening more, and am curious if it was still played after 1990... Though with <extensive> computer analysis and study it might be possible to find some sort of justification for Black to play this line in the French, dunno.

I posted this game here now, but if you in future want me to post this in <Russian GMs> forum just let me know.

Still have to get used to the place there, in effect I haven't posted once there, yet.

Feb-06-10  achieve: <Jess> - Actually there are only 7 games listed in the OE: Opening Explorer -- and Black's reply after 9. a4, with 9...c3, does appear to be drawish from the stat, though 5 games are by no means a sample/poule to draw much - if any - significance from. There is a rather wild correspondence Draw among them.

I should probably re-open my forum to further examine this line, eh?

Anyhoo this is quite an instructional line for chess students re the dynamics and characteristics (what an awful word to type!) so early on in the opening, esp. in the Geller game with the early piecs sac.

The letters on the intertitles shake around unless you play it on the 480b "high end" youtube mode.

Feb-06-10  Russian Grandmasters: Good grief JINX <Niels>!!

Outstanding- I've just finished the latest on for the Profile and I"ve been working non-stop on it since 4:00 in the morning till a few minutes ago.

Looks very tasty your analysis-- I'll have a good look at it tomorrow morning with fresh eyes.

However, I believe I found some analysis of that very <Dreev> encounter with <Geller> during my extensive hunt for <Geller> articles and photos today.

I will check and chime in with some commentary on the commentary you just posted.

You can post the stuff here or in the COMMIE forum as you wish-

It's very good to see you posting some chess here in my home base to tell you the truth.

And Jiminy Crickets while looking for <Euwe photos> for the vid, I saw both of yours and I almost jumped out of my skin.

IT WAS LIKE YOU WERE SUDDENLY STARING AT ME AND CHECKING UP ON MY WORK!!

lol

Power of association with the "visual image" and one's friends.

Anyhoo I'll be back later.

Jess

Feb-06-10  achieve: <Jess> You must be exhausted, and dying for a fine foot-rub, back-rub... The works!!

I barely scratched the surface, both re the games of Keres and Geller, upon your "project" that I admire, and which drew me in to study their play -- and the French/Tarrasch that also drew me in I have to still get into deeper, hopefully tomorrow morning here... You'll be of course half a day in front...

Also I am making work of studying, in amazement to some extent, the work of historian and Geo-political scientist/analyst <Carroll Quigley>, who taught at Georgetown, including B. Clinton, but what he reveals is quite startling, and especially "Tragedy and Hope"...

Enough 'o that, I just need some time to study <Geller> some more, and <Tal> as well, and the relationship between their opening repertoire, and there style of play, their approach, with regard to their preparation for the big tourneys and (pre)Title matches, though Tal was rumoured to prepare very little, in comparison.

Different times, era, and that is what Botwinnik exploited, potentially, when he had a second go at <Mischa>.

And since I was too busy with stuff on my agenda (including multiple annoying phonecalls), I postponed watching your new vid;

I want to go in "unhurried" and rested - and thus will pick the right moment to watch it.

Arright, IMNSHO we have the right to be proud and satisfied with today's work...

Temporarily, of course.

heh

Feb-06-10  Russian Grandmasters: <Niels>

Geller vs Dreev, 1990

And <Tarrasch> theory-

I agree your posted FEN looks a lot better for white- I also agree that there aren't enough stats in the database to justify conclusions about possible continuations from here.

<Kingscrusher> plays the Tarrasch- both in Blitz and OTB, and it's making a comeback in some circles, though I'm not sure about the top levels.

I think the original idea for White- not to block in his own <c-pawn>- is a good one, although the Knight seems misplaced on <e2> and of course White's lead in development may diminish since the Knight will have to be reshuffled normally.

But I think <3...a6> is a time waster to begin with- given that the Tarrasch will normally be played "open" and thus quick development may well pay off for White.

click for larger view

Only 400 games played from here and there's probably a reason for that- though White doesn't seem to score particularly better from here than in any other French variation.

I think that's because HOW CAN THE THIRD MOVE OF A GAME BE DECISIVE.

heh

I wouldn't play it though.

<Geller's> big lead in development certainly pays off in this game- which is so famous there's a screen shot of this position on Google Images:

11. Bxc4!!

click for larger view

And the ensuing fireworks look like a game from the 1800s. This *is* in fact the game I was looking at yesterday on someone's chess blog but I can't find it at the moment.

It's games like this that confirm <Geller's> kinship with players like <Alekhine> and <Topalov> and <Tal>-- constantly looking to crack open the center, ultra aggressive piece play, and sharp combinative tactics.

It's games like these that stir the blood and fire up the imagination.

Feb-07-10  achieve: Great post! Though <Topalov>, it just hit me, played "unusually passive" - and refused to "crack open the center" - in that closed RUY against <Kamsky> where he got crushed like a bug...

I was just now reading an introductory treatise on <The Scientific Method in Social Sciences>, and your post immediately <stirred my imagination> and caused me to attempt to apply it here, that is on Study of Chess Openings, acquiring data, formulating a hypothesis, (like I, you, we did), and testing the hypothesis in various ways...

Let me quote a small part here:

"Having gathered all the "relevant" evidence, the scientist may proceed to the second part of scientific methodology, making a hypothesis. In doing this, two rules must be followed: (a) the hypothesis must explain all the observations
and (b) the hypothesis must be the simplest one that will explain them. These two rules might be summed up in the statement that a scientific hypothesis must be adequate and it must be simple. Once again let us confess that these two rules are idealistic rather than practicable, but they remain, nevertheless, the goals by which a scientist guides his activities. When we say that a hypothesis must be adequate, and
thus must include all of the relevant observations, we are saying something simple. But carrying out this simple admonition is extremely difficult. It is quite true that every
scientific hypothesis suffers from inadequate evidence—"

<Only 400 games played from here and there's probably a reason for that- <<< though White doesn't seem to score particularly better from here than in any other French variation.

I think that's because HOW CAN THE THIRD MOVE OF A GAME BE DECISIVE.>>>

heh

I wouldn't play it though.>

HAHA! Spot on!

Back later - I've been up since 4am- like you yesterday...

Feb-07-10  achieve: <Jess> Short elaboration:

"The second requirement of a scientific hypothesis--that it should be simple--is also more difficult to carry out in practice than it is to write down in words. Essentially, it means that a hypothesis should explain the existing observations by making the <fewest> assumptions and by inferring the simplest relationships. This is so vital that a hypothesis is scientific or fails to be scientific on this point alone."

Touché, and so true, and applies very well to using the OE data, as it provides ONLY the outcome of entire games between XYZ == and then mistakingly using it as a directive, or better yet, creating the assumption that one move on say move #4, is better than another, based on the outcome of entire games.

This has been extensively discussed and "explored" during the Timmerman and Nickelodeon centaur games here, and very few were able to handle this basic dilemma with verve. <Boomie> was one of the exceptions, in my opinion.

Feb-07-10  achieve: <Jess> Good evening

I was planning to post more on the French Tarrasch line, but something's come up so I will save it until later;--

Feb-07-10  Russian Grandmasters: <Niels>

Good afternoon.

That's a very convincing articulation of the spirit and practice of the scientific method, and excellent use of it applied to our own <Opening Explorer>.

Quite right.

Post away on the Tarrasch at your leisure- I've actually been toying with the idea of using it- meaning I'd have to learn it.

Feb-07-10  Boomie: There's a picture of GK's wife about half way down here http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail....

Fortunately, she is not a "looker" like you or Deffi so you don't have to be jealous.

I don't want you to be jealous.

Feb-07-10  Boomie: <achieve: <Jess> Short elaboration: "The second requirement of a scientific hypothesis--that it should be simple--is also more difficult to carry out in practice than it is to write down in words.>

"Elegant" is the word used to describe a successful hypothesis like F=ma. Short and sweet.

Feb-07-10  Russian Grandmasters: <Tim> YOWSER that's one good looking Russky.

That's his second wife I think.

"Force equals your Momma x Acceleration?"

You're right that is elegant.

Who knew?

Feb-07-10  hms123: FWIW: John Watson devotes a chapter in <Dangerous Weapons: The French> recommending <3...a6> for Black, and claims it was played by Botvinnik, Korchnoi, and Topalov, among others.

Here are some of his points:
1. prevents Bb5+

2. allows the possiblity of ...b5 and ...b4 with ...Bb7 and ....Qb6

3. ....Bd7 and ...Bb5 are possible (exchanging the bad bishop)

Feb-07-10  Boomie: <Russian Grandmasters: <Tim> YOWSER that's one good looking Russky. That's his second wife I think.

"Force equals your Momma x Acceleration?">

I thought it meant "Food = Mama".

Of course, I think that latte is a major food group. I'm in it for the warm milk.

I would be sorely tempted to play 4. a4

1. Frustrate your opponent.

2. One bad pawn move deserves another.

3. I'm just that kind of guy.

Hot crossed bun for the first to give the origin of that quote.
