| Feb-25-10 | | Russian Grandmasters: <Benji: Curling Nation> Well defended- for Canada too.
Did we win the Curling gold medal?
I haven't seen any of the Olympics. I read that our hockey team punked out to America, but <Niels> has just informed me that they beat Russia so that means we got Bronze for hockey? I'd watch the winter olympics if they brought back the basketball. |

| Feb-25-10 | | Travis Bickle: <Russian Grandmasters:> <Travis Damone> LOL!! |

| Feb-25-10 | | crawfb5: Both the Canadian men's and women's curling teams will be playing for gold medals. Kindle is getting lukewarm responses from area students. http://www.ctpost.com/default/artic... http://www.ctpost.com/default/artic... |

| Feb-25-10 | | Russian Grandmasters: Ah this is most encouraging <Big Crawdaddy>. Good for these alert <University of Area> students! Annotations in the margins- who knew? They better not be doing this in Liberry books though. I suppose you could do the same thing on Kindle but your screen might get clogged up with Magic Marker trails. I don't think "real books" will ever disappear.
People like hefting them- you can throw them at a wall if you like. Or use them as paperweights. Or as decorations on a bookshelf.
But the students are correct I think- at least it's the same for me. Reading a physical book focuses the attention. Whilst reading online, I'm constantly distracted by urges to 'take a break' and play Ms. Pacman for three hours in a row. |

| Feb-25-10 | | achieve: <He was very insistent on this "fact" in the discussion- <twinlark> immediately pointed out his "fact" was wrong- posted the link for him- and the fellow never, ever, acknowledged that he had made an error.> Got that - and of course you're right, and recently I have been all up and about to make sure i know every syllabe and letter of the Bill-a-rights plus Constitution and its clauses. Canada is in the semis now, knock-out fase, but I wonder what substance some of the guys were "on", as the close ups at times were rather reveiling, sniff, if you catch my drift. Btw - the ideal scenario would be to meet the USA in the final again, to then avenge the preliminary round loss, topped with a Gold to boot. Ah well, I haven't been that much into "Hockey" since <Gretzky> retired from the sport; I idolized that man. |
|
| Feb-25-10 | | Russian Grandmasters: <Niels> thanks for that Olympic Hockey update- Do you really think the boys are juiced?
Maybe they get drunk before the games. That's a Canadian tradition. At any rate, I'm so out of the loop sportswise here because my Mom is a bigger sports fan. She follows the hockey- Vancouver Canucks and International- and women's- every game. |
|
| Feb-25-10 | | achieve: <Do you really think the boys are juiced?> Haha! Juiced... Well - that first period against Russia, which I did see live - they looked to be plugged in to a 3000 Volt generator, and the closeups when on the penalty bench revealed high charge and release valves working overtime. Can't prove it of course but watching the live footage I couldn't help but wonder... A <Hockey mom> eh?
Sarah Palin WATCH OUT!
heh |
|
| Feb-25-10 | | Russian Grandmasters: Well Mom's a purist "hockey Mom" in the sense none of her children ever played hockey. She whoops and hollers for three hours during the games. She came from Finland where they are nuts about Hockey same as Canada. Possibly the boys are using refreshing Cocaine for the games, since that's not tested for? More fun than ephedrine, possibly. |
|
| Feb-25-10 | | achieve: Finland plays the US in the first semi, and I hope they manage an upset, and Slovakia won't roll over for Canada either I reckon. But Canada that first period was just insane. No coincidence either that the 3rd ended up 0-0 ... <She whoops and hollers for three hours during the games.> heh - Love that! Especially in Finnish; I'd pay admission fee to witness that... Gotta really hit the proverbial sac now though... 3am - Ouch - free day tomorrow though. |

| Feb-25-10 | | Russian Grandmasters: Good night <Niels>! |
|
| Feb-25-10 | | Russian Grandmasters: Vera Menchik was the greatest Women's World Champion in history. She won the first eight consecutive Championships, scoring an unbelievable +78 -1 =4. She played in many top level international tournaments against the best Chess masters of her era. She beat World Champion Max Euwe twice- and she also beat Reshevsky, Opocensky, Sultan Khan, Albert Becker, Friedrich Samisch, Harry Golombek, and Sultan Khan. |

| Feb-25-10 | | crawfb5: Rumor has it your last video is really on trying to explain the appeal of <The Three Stooges> to the typical male. We hear it it codenamed <Jess Say Moe>. |
|
| Feb-25-10 | | Russian Grandmasters: <Big Crawdaddy>
Well I don't know their work. Luckily it's on youtube, so I will investigate, and then post an irresponsibly shallow and uninformed analysis of your important historical question. Actually I was thinking of doing a film about <sasquatch>, but I've run out of time- I have to go back to work on Tuesday.
These films take so much time to make that it might take me two weeks to complete one if I weren't on vacation. sigh |

| Feb-25-10 | | Travis Bickle: Jess I thought you would be a big hockey fan. Ya know poot da pook in da net ay! lol |

| Feb-26-10 | | Travis Bickle: Hi Jess here's a song from Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys falling out of love with his wife. P.S. This is one of Paul McCartney's favorite songs! Caroline No - The Beach Boys

| Feb-26-10 | | benjinathan: I can't help but post this. Yesterday I said: <curling is awesome! chess on ice.> I found this in the NYTimes today:
<But aficionados say it isn’t about thrills (or the lack thereof). It is about strategy and precision. Curling is like chess on ice, and that, Wall Streeters say, it part of its quiet appeal.> Apparently curlers think that chess is "curling on a board"... |
|
| Feb-26-10 | | technical draw: <it part of its quiet appeal> There's nothing quiet about curlers. They scream like psychos. It's actually an expensive form of billiards. |

| Feb-26-10 | | Open Defence: what do you call a Sasquatch that plays chess ?
A Reti... |

Very cool BRIAN WILSON. Because of the album photo, when he sang about her hair at first I thought he was talking about the goat!! Because you love song/breakup song cycle includes some pets like Martha. This is a true to life song IMO about breakups-
"You used to be different"
When you hear that it's time to call the divorce lawyer. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Benji: Curling Nation> Well yes- literally! When I learned chess from my Dad he had a very nice set- Mahoggany board and solid pieces with felt bottoms. Imagine his horror when he came upon me whilst I was "practicing"... sliding the Queen down the board to knock out an array of Black pieces. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Deffi> yes the dread <Himalayan Reti> is known to break into Nepalese huts at night, alter the positions in adjourned games, and vanish into the darkness. They fear the Reti. |
|
| Feb-26-10 | | crawfb5: I like the new video. I particularly like your technique of introducing the name slightly after the picture is already up. A little bit of text goes a long way, or as Bobby said, "Best by text." At Ramsgate, Vera and Capa both beat Thomas, Michell, and Price, and both drew Yates and Tylor. The difference was that Capa beat Winter and Sergeant while Vera drew both. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Big Crawdaddy>
Yes and curious (to me) that Capa and Vera did not play against each other in the Tournament. ?? Is this something to do with the "Schveniningen rules"? I know it was a "Schveniningen Tournament", but I don't know what that is. I could GOOGLE it but I'd much rather learn the information from a friend. I don't feel GOOGLE is my friend. Thanks for your encouraging comments on the <Vera Menchik> video - Your help all around with my "Chess History web Archiving" project this month has been both material and generous. Without your interest- contributing valuable and interesting web links, building games collections, giving advice- the project wouldn't have got off the ground. One of the gems you dug up that should be publicized- because absolutely fascinating- is that article about <Mikhail Tal> and friends, including <Garry Kasparov>, at the <Moscow Blitz Tournament 1992>: "Triumph and Tragedy"
Part One:

Part Two:

It has many rare photos of her, and features music by Faure and Mahler. |

| Feb-27-10 | | crawfb5: <Jess> A "Scheveningen Tournament" is a two-team event where everyone on Team A plays everyone on Team B, rather than the usual board-by-board matchup you see in the Olympiads and elsewhere. It was first used at Scheveningen back in the 1920s to give a team of Dutch players some experience against foreign masters, and this seems to be the most common format; "our boys" versus "foreign talent." So, Ramsgate was Great Britain versus "foreign."
# 30th March-6th April, Ramsgate: Great Britain-The Foreigners 17-32 Great Britain team: Thomas 3½; Yates 3; Michell 2½; Tylor 2½; Winter 2; Sergeant 2; Price 1½ Foreign team: Capablanca 6; Rubinstein 5; V.Menchik 5; Koltanowski 4½; Maroczy 4½; Soultanbeieff 4; Znosko-Borovsky 3½) <All the point totals may not be accurate; Capa's was given as 5-1/2, not 6 in my team results source, which is temporarily down.> Here's another source where the games broken down by round and you can download the PGNs(CG has all of Vera's games, but not all the games in the event): http://www.pgnmentor.com/events/Ram... |
