Mar-22-10  madlydeeply: was that you talking about Morphy and Harrwitz? I was just reading this lovely book by Neil MacDonald who i am quite fond of as an author...lessee...the book is called THE GIANTS OF POWER PLAY...Morphy lost his first three games with Harrwitz...one "friendly" game and then two match games...Harrwitz was a super solid grinder...but Morphy stepped back and changed his game a bit to deal with Harrwitz and proceeded to knock him on his ass i imagine. ANyhow this is very interesting because it EXPLODES three chess cliches: (A) the 19th century chess was a "romantic" game only with crazy needlebonger attacking alla time (B) Morphy was "Miles Ahead" of his contemporaries (he wasn't miles ahead after a 0-3 start vs. Harrwitz...he had to adjust to and study and prepare for his opposition just like everybody else...except Capa maybe..) (C) Boh i forgot the third so what.

Happy days.

If you went back in time and killed the inventor of the hot tub, would you be in hot water?

Spot Quiz - Isn't this exciting?

How many hippies does it take of fill a hot tub?

Best answer wins a cookie.

Mar-23-10  hms123: <Jess> Here’s a position from H Teske vs Uhlmann, 1986:

(Black to play)

The game continued <46…f4+ 47.resign> but imagine that White had played on a few moves with <47. Kxf4 c3 48.bxc3>

Now there is a trick. Black needs to play <48.b3!>

rather than <48.bxc3??>-- where the latter allows the WK to catch the pawn.

  jessicafischerqueen: <H> oops sorry!

That's a chess lesson (and a good one) not a puzzle.

Thank you- yes I got that straight off- it's the same theme as the other endgame you posted here a while back.

move that passer ahead in the lane where the King can't get him, instead of routinely recapturing.

This is a very instructive lesson Howard, because the human finger wants to recapture before the brain can make a proper decision.

jessicafischerqueen: Don't forget to vote- every hour on the hour- for <Honza Cervenka's> new baby Aneta. She is in mortal combat with the evil Michael Vader of Silesia, so we must steel ourselves to the task.

Click on this website-

http://kladensky.denik.cz/miminka/m...

Then click on the <Aneta> box-

Then scroll to the bottom of the list of names and click on <Hlasovat>.

You can vote one time each hour from the same IP address.

As a Finn, I know that "hlasovat" means "in your face buddy!

Example- I just did it_

<Will you help me (us?) solve this chronic problem through appropriate measures? I mean blowing the whistle.

I've just done it with the following message to the admins:

<This person has been repeatedly spamming the Kibbutzer's Cafe with endless strings of meaningless garbage.

The cafe is important because many first time users ask questions here= and thanks to ELOHAH these questions are often immediately buried.

Please stop this man from SELFISHLY destroying possibly the most important page at CG.com

Thank you=

Mar-23-10  Travis Bickle: Sorry Jess I didnt't have a chance to get back to you about your question on bookmarking on Opera. I'm glad you figured it out! ; P On the Opera page you can also add nine of your favorite websites you visit frequently.

It seems like opera is the one music that intensifies emotion even in a ganster shootout scene or some other act of violence. I believe Raging Bull used opera in that classic film. Here's an example of what opera can do in film. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=se8T...
