Mar-27-10  achieve: Thanks <L>!! That confirms it.

I'll send a correction slip, which would be my "first slip!" ;)

Mar-27-10  achieve: They'll have to make a three-fold correction: two in the directory (including Johann L's date of death and adding S Loewenthal), and change the name on the gamepage. There are more engaging ways to spend a weekend ;)

SwitchingQuylthulg: <achieve> ChessGames.com never makes any changes to the player directory; that operates itself 99.9% automatically based on changes to player files and actual games. The date of 1883 doesn't pretend to be his date of death, rather the date of his last game in the database (that would be the game above). S. Loewenthal won't make the Player Directory even after the correction is made because a minimum of 18 games are required (this number seems to be periodically revised - it has been 17, 16 and 15 in the past).
Mar-27-10  achieve: <Switch> You are right, of course, last game in the database... My edge is slipping, as you have no doubt already noticed, and will go out on a little cycling trip (oxygen for me, CO2 for the trees etc.).

And thanks. Good show.

Mar-27-10  crawfb5: Ok, I think I found the crosstable:

http://www.edochess.ca/tournaments/...

which would make the opponent <Salomon> Lowenthal:

http://www.edochess.ca/players/p744...

Mar-27-10  achieve: <L> Fantastic - and a master level player, with from your link over 30 games possibly available for upload...

Biographical data
Name: Löwenthal, Salomon
Born: 6 Apr. 1843
Died: 1 Sep. 1921

All in all a remarkable "dicovery", certainly deserving of a place within <chessgames.com>

Mar-27-10  crawfb5: One additional note of historical interest...this was the "Hauptturnier" where Tarrasch made his bones as master, which then entitled him to enter top-tier events in the future.
Mar-27-10  achieve: Exactly - and Salomon was around 40 at that time and probably wasn't as ambitious. Still an 18 year spanning career in strong German tourneys and some great results, as reflected by the rating graph.

Mar-28-10  achieve: Good Morning.

<J> That is one heck of a video-collection by your Youtube Chess Friend.

Good afternoon.

Did you per chance try the POTD today?

My bicycle is very beautiful, but I have three of them, and one, my racing bicycle, is the most beautiful, by a bike length.

I actually I have a fourth; one you can fold up so you may take it with you in a train or bus!

The 'Brompton' - http://www.vouwfiets.nl/images/cate...

and within <15 seconds> you're "ready to go": http://www.profilejanssen.nl/imageh...

!!!!

My calculations indicate you are jealous now.

Thank you.

Mar-28-10  Boomie: I have 52 bicycles in a deck of cards.

Also I played poker at the Bicycle Club in LA.

Jealous That!

jessicafischerqueen: LOL "the Brompton" how can I compete with a bicycle that has it's own title.

Mine is called "The big blue one that can support my fat ass", if I'm not mistaken.

On a rare frivolous note, did you know that Steinitz was an extraordinarily interesting person?

He's generous with one hand and savage with the other- and he didn't suffer fools lightly.

He caught all manner of hell for panning a certain "Book of Openings" because he dared point out that the author of this book was a TERRIBLE CHESS PLAYER.

Sounds familiar...

Did you know that the number one chess instructional channel on youtube- and this is by far- with many, many thousands more views than Kingscrusher- is created by someone who is also TERRIBLE at chess?

I'm of two minds here. If a person is excellent at synthesizing and presenting instructional material in a way that actually makes the reader/viewer a stronger chess player, then the material is valuable- de facto.

In fact, I maintain that a person who did not even know the way the pieces moved could- conceivably- create such materials.

On the other hand, in the back of my mind there's a little voice saying "Pay attention to people who can actually thump you in a game of chess."

Anyways it's all very fascinating.

Also Edward Winter's Chess History is a very, very fine Chess resource.

I wonder if he knows how to play.

jessicafischerqueen: I did not look at the POTD today, but I will take a look.

I pronounce it POTD as well.

Mar-28-10  achieve: <Jess> It's a lot of fun, and hard work, especially if you think it's White to move, as I started out with... But after 5 or 6 minutes I had pretty much mapped out the features and main threats, weaknesses... Still the KILL SHOT is not easy to find, and then converting it against best opposition, SHREDDER at 1 min/move, is good training.

<In fact, I maintain that a person who did not even know the way the pieces moved could- conceivably- create such materials.> I lean towards agreeing with you, though it "would" take an extra-ordinary effort, and intelligence and imagination. Or limitation of the scope/width of the subjects of the to be instructed material...

Ok - back to Mop and Broom(pton)...

heh

  jessicafischerqueen: Yes quite right <Doctor>

LOL white to move I do that all the time also.

Ok great vision- just great of SHABALOV to see his Queen was immune from both captures because of CHECKMATE.

And also to go beyond that to calculate the forcing line.

I got caught up with my Shredder and spent over an hour finding A forcing line, which I did on the first go round after having the move given to me by the game itself.

However, my "technique" was not so good- despite having a 5-6 pawn advantage I needed a few do-overs to convert.

Embarrassingly, I needed a do-over in a variation in which I go up a Rook.

Bloody Shredder- it doesn't make any mistakes- every defensive resource available is how you put it before.

Also- Shredder IMMEDIATELY spotted Shabalov's Kill shot and I mean in less than a second.

I clicked "go" from the position and the arrow IMMEDIATELY pointed the Queen to the kill square.

How is this possible to compute so fast?

I think it's fishy.

Mar-28-10  Travis Bickle: Hey Jess on my forum I have kingscrusher anaylsis of Spassky vs Fischer 1972 game 5. A brilliant game by Bobby! ; )
Mar-28-10  achieve: It's absurd; they pound out some 500,000 positions at 4-6 ply within millisecs, after that the tree grows exponentially out of brute force reach. As we know. I'm rambling.

I was unusually sharp this morning, that is I had an easy time assessing the entire board quite quickly for some reason and had to play one takeback to convert.

Ah - it was the one video I checked by Chess Network that got me in the zone very quickly.... He's very good....

Mar-28-10  madlydeeply: I think i have learned something about how to open one's mind to chess.

IF You have the type of mind that must WIN WIN WIN then go ahead and be competitive and you will be driven to learn as much as possible.

HOWEVER if one is not the of the sort that must win, then that fellah (people like me) have to stop worrying about winning and just explore the twists and turns of the game. Lose a few...so what?? Lose a few THOUSAND

Unfortunately for those of us who are not super competition freaks, there are hardly any "role models" for us. All those super chess players are "win at all costs" types. i think i read somewhere (an interview acirce referenced) where Nigel Short tells Ivanchuk that Kasparov card more about "winning" than about "chess". well this comment apparently gave me pause as i have been dwelling upon it for months now.

So this is kind of relevant, see, because "good" chess players see ALL the possibilites, or at least all the relevant ones...bad chess players don't see as many...but what they see is still mezmerizing fascinating...and can be explained.

I personally think needing to WIN all the time is a little....CRAZY... and all these high powered chess players are CRAZY for my benefit and enjoyment! Well you can say most profound art is produced by and endless parade of CRAZY PEOPLE like Van Gogh...now that guy was crazy!

SO...unless you are crazy...let go of needing to win...and your understanding of chess will develop. my advice. Chess became much more fun when I stopped caring about winning. Unfortunately i blunder a lot. So what. Too much coffee.

Mar-28-10  madlydeeply: HMmm...a related topic....y'know the fabulous Michael Jordan was coach of the Washington Wizards...and he was an awful coach! He completely traumatized Kwamee Brown (sorry about the spelling) according to my DC friends...well how can one teach utter dedication to one's craft and utter unassailiable self confidence? Since MJ probaby skipped all sorts of developmental steps that "lesser" players must take...and probably has never had a shred of self doubt in his entire life...how can he have any empathy for someone who does? He can't even comprehend a player not having drive or confidence.

At any rate, "great" chess players probably don't remember all the baby steps that us lesser folk are still taking. if they need to explain some relationship between pieces/squares that seems completely obvious to them they would probably become very frustrated and bored. Yup...teaching is a different skill then performing. A teacher needs to care about the dignity of the student...a player needs to dominate and beat the student. Two different things.
