Apr-06-10  crawfb5: <Jess> I assume you've seen this on Google Books on Steinitz-Lasker match.

http://books.google.com/books?pg=PA...

Btw, this might be the origin of the "It's your move" story. The publication date of the book is 1894.

<A feature of the match was the reproduction of the games by wire, move for move, in the window of the Montreal Star1 office. The idea emanated from the ever-fertile brain of Mr. J. N. Babson, who furnished the board, which was affixed on an easel. It almost became a question whether the Star people would not find it necessary to withdraw the board, as during parts of the play two policemen were required to keep the crowd moving, and on Saturday afternoon, St. James', which is a wide street, became impassable for vehicles for a short time. An officer asked a spectator who was standing in the clearing on the footway to move. " It's your move," replied the enthusiast, without removing his eyes from the board.> p. 10

Apr-06-10  crawfb5: Steinitz' 1891 book on the 6th American Chess Congress is also on Google Books:

Apr-06-10  madlydeeply: <...a man beleaugered by pesky fans...> This is EXACTLY the reason why i chose to never succeed at anything!!

Just saw part V i loved it. Love those faces. Its like a Burns Documentary without any boring narration! And i'm not just talking...

I have a request...a video on CRAZY RUSSIANS!! you could have Rasputin, Dostoyevsky, Baryshnikov, Ivan the TErrible etc.

I would do it but i can't on accounta i'm so lazy.

Once i read this book (and i lost it...damnnation!) called "The Imperial Orgy"...ok i admit i thought it was a sexy book at first...but it was some angry Russki's rant about how bloodthirsty all the Czars were...that book was a blast it was like crack it went straight to the head!!

Actually i just heard that about crack...from some of my customers back in the taxi days...

I am smiling today on accounta YOU and PMMoCptV! Thanks!

Apr-06-10  madlydeeply: Proof I'm not a liar!!

http://books.google.com/books?id=dz...

Apr-06-10  madlydeeply: OhMyGod the whole book is there! Its a must read! Is this what you were talking about...downloading books?
Apr-06-10  madlydeeply: Here is a sampling from a random page. EVERY page is like this!! Page 67..Peter the Great...

<For University, Russia has the scaffold; for curriculum, the knout. These things instruct. They teach the aesthetics of servility, hypocrisy, smothered hatred, and bursting bombs. But not morals. Pete, devoid of any as an orangoutang, saw no reason in them. He may have been right. Mathematics know nothing of morals....>

HA HA!

I can't believe i ever let that book go. So STUDPID

Me too. Tough, isn't it? All those burned books, disguises, blunders in won games. But it's worth it for the peace and quiet. Celebrity is *soooo* toxic.

Another fine addition to the Paul Morphine series. There are a few rough spots but name 10 minutes of any film that doesn't have a wart or two.

I see you added some paintings. Great idea. Wish I had it first.

Civil War music was quite good. For your next feature, I suggest you listen to some of them.

When news of Appomattox reached the White House, Lincoln ordered the band to play "Dixie". "I always liked that tune" he said. How healing reconstruction would have been but for...

"We are a band of brothers and native to the soil

Fighting for our Liberty, With treasure, blood and toil

And when our rights were threatened, the cry rose near and far

Hurrah for the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a single star!

Hurrah. Hurrah. For Southern rights, hurrah.

Hurrah for the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a single star."

Great marching song.

Antietam is still chilling after all these years. The battle started at 6 AM and by 9 AM there were more casualties than the US suffered all day at Normandy. Unbelievable carnage. The sunken lane...ouch.

Apr-07-10  Boomie: <Boomie at the Boobie>

Of the currently running series, three have grabbed me a bit. They all combine humor with action and drama which is how I prefer my Boobie shows. Shows without humor such as MI-5 or 24, although first rate in every other aspect, wear thin after a few episodes.

In Plain Sight - Marshals try to keep tabs on protected witnesses. Mary McCormack has some game as she showed on West Wing. I was hooked when she called her sister "Squish". Heh.

Leverage - A comic Mission Impossible where a crew of con artists and thieves sting the unscrupulous.

Burn Notice - A spy is out in the cold. While he tries to get rehired by "The Company", he uses his skills to help underdogs. With the always amusing Sharon Gless as the chain smoking alcoholic mother.

Forgot to metion The Closer, which I'm sure you've sampled by now. Terrific ensemble cast and a nice blend of drama and humor.

Seriously, I believe this to be the best "one click" chess website on the internet.

The wealth of features- chess history, chess analysis- is simply staggering.

Don't miss out!!

User: kibitzwc

for a very useful resource on WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH GAMES.

<kibitzwc> runs Fritz 12 at Five mins and then posts a PGN with the basic line annotations- not exhaustive but this is the beauty of his project.

It's "clean"- you just copy past his PGNs into your chess engine and you can easily see the basic idea behind the lines pursued in each game.

Go to his Profile and see how many games he has done already.
