 | | Domdaniel: <Travis> Thanx for Melanie's Brand New Key ... brought back memories. Miz Melanie Safka really had an amazing voice - her version of Ruby Tuesday is untouchable. I had a tape of her greatest hits, including 'Alexander Beetle' -- check it out: it's about a kid looking for a pet beetle ("we looked in all the places that a beetle might be near/ and we made the sort of noises that a beetle likes to hear/ [click ... tsk-tsk]" -- funny thing, it's got the same rhythm and word pattern as Leonard Cohen's 'Alexandra Leaving' - and makes poor old Lennie impossible to take seriously ever again. And there's Brand New Key. I actually remember seeing this on TV, top of the Pops, when it was a hit in the 70s. Somebody did a country-western parody that went "I've got a brand new combine harvester ..." Mercifully, that's all I remember of that. |

 | | Domdaniel: This is a good version of Alexander Beetle with a movie and beetle noises: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYYU... There's a theory that 'Nanny' in the song is Margaret Thatcher, Alexander Beetle is Al Haig, and the kid is Ronnie Reagan. It's cold war politics in children's language. But that would mean Melanie saw 15 years into the future. |

| Apr-10-10 | | achieve: Hi <Jess>! - I was playing out what I thought might be a "testing" KNPP v KB winning procedure, but essentially failed because I did underestimate the task subconsciously, in retrospect; and also I ran into a bug of some kind, quite annoying, and was curious if you (all) experience the same; story and details at my place, including the hyperlink that refuses me access to the 200+ games it says has on offer. ???
Probably a bug, but before I run over to headquarters I thought to check with you first, if you have the time of course. Thanks |

| Apr-10-10 | | Travis Bickle: Thanks Boomie for that great song Beautiful People! That song touched me also! I think Melanie with such beauty and such honesty was so accessible that she could touch your soul very easily. Here's another song (very '60's), I really liked from her. To me sort of an accoustic Beatley Strawberry Fields thing. Look What They Did To My Song Ma - Melanie

 | | Domdaniel: <crawf> Thank you for finding The Wurzels. It's easy to forget there was *another* 1970s ... neither punk nor disco nor Jessie's beloved Prog. This one had odd drinking songs, like Lindisfarne and The Wurzels (I am a Cider Drinker) ... And The Scaffold, featuring Paul McCartney's brother, Mike: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2x8D... |

| Apr-11-10 | | SatelliteDan: Hi Jessica, just wanted to tell you how much I appreciate your youtube video series of Morphy. I learned how to play our game by playing over Morphy games. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <SatelliteDan> you are very welcome and thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. I also love playing over Morphy games.
You should also thank <Travis Bickle> because it was him who told me to make this series. The next video biography will be on <Wilhelm Steinitz>. I will also be making a documentary video on the great <Hastings 1895 Tournament>. If you have any requests, please drop them in my forum. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: Hi <Satellite>!!
Thanks for your kind support.
No, thank you- I stopped playing CG.com friends around a year ago because I found it a bit of an emotional strain. I like to murder my opponents and I don't take it kindly when I lose either. I'm not advocating this approach but it's the only way I can play well. I'm not capable of a "friendly game of chess." |
|

 | | jessicafischerqueen: heh
I get it.
No, and thanks again- I'd rather have you as a new friend than a mortal enemy. I used to have tons of mortal enemies at this website. That <chessmoron>!!! MCLOVINNNNNNNN!!!
The last time I played a friend here it was <twinlark> two games at 5 days a move I think- we split a pair on Kingscrusher's great <chessnet.com> website. But like I said I found it distracting and nerve wracking to play a friend. I know it's hard to believe, but I come to CG.com to relax. And to get help from my friends with chess, and to give it when requested. For me, it's US against THEM.
This is my chess oasis. |
