Some people I play on gameknot blitz just stop playing and the games time out. No doubt there's an emergency like their house burning down, forcing them to rush off to protect the internet connection so they can keep playing chess. Unfortunately, they don't tend to get back in time to tell me the good news. I just want to express my concern at the very high percentage of people on the losing end of a game whose houses are burning. Moral: Losing a game of blitz chess is a fire hazard. Paradox: My house hasn't burnt down yet although I've lost at least one game. Maybe more. |

| Apr-28-10 | | crawfb5: <twinlark> They are probably the same people who always had grandparents die right at exam time in school. It's a good thing they have such extended families considering how serious a health risk school exams are. |

One of my friends was raised in Darwin, northern Australia. One day (back in the 70s) soon after a new teacher (new to the school and to the town) showed up my friend turned up late at school. The teacher did the routine "why are you late" bit, and my friend replied that the train had been late that morning. The teacher accepted this and returned to the teaching the day's lessons. Darwin had no train in those days...

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Gentlemen> Thanks for your very useful anecdotes and suggestions regarding the Correspondence Game- I liked all of them. However, I will adopt one of <Dom's>, I'm just going to finish the game as quickly as possible. He's not taking 10 days per move, quite the contrary- he moves within three or four hours of my moves. It's this that irritated me most- that he was not taking the game seriously, but there's no reason this should irritate me, for the important reason: "Why should this irritate me?"
tks <Doctor Euwe> tks mstr. I have to work again at work so I'll respond to the musical posts soon. I have to listen to them first. |

| May-01-10 | | twinlark: Hey Jess
Thought I'd add a movie must watch to your list: <One Night the Moon>, directed by Rachel Perkins. It's achingly simple and beautiful, set in outback Oz in 1932, music by Paul Kelly and Ken Carmody. A short Aussie musical. Magic. |
