Ok everyone! Please post all messages to me in <technical draw> forum first, so he can vet them properly.

  jessicafischerqueen: <Canyonero> Fantastic!

Very interesting review of the only Charousek biography that's been translated into English, Victor Charuchin's "Chess Comet Charousek."

It's a largely accurate review that's marred- significantly, in my view- by the reviewer's negative "know it all" attitude.

Now, I don't have a problem with such an attitude per se, so long as you have your facts straight. However, if you are going to adopt it, you had better be *extra* careful to get your facts straight.

And this reviewer is not extra careful, or even particularly careful.

The reviewer refers to Charousek as "The Austrian Morphy"

INCORRECT

After Charousek's International debut Chigorin began referring to him as "The New Morphy."

Steinitz as we know was called "The Austrian Morphy."

The reviewer complains that "crack" is not a word in English, and makes fun of the translators for being stupid.

In fact, the word "crack", meaning "expert," was in wide use in the late 19th century.

It appears regularly in newspaper articles to denote an "expert" chess player- As in "Pillsbury and other cracks appeared at the...." etc.

Note to the reviewer:
There is perhaps nothing more stupid= nothing- than laughing at how stupid someone else is when YOU are the person who's got the facts wrong.

However as I said, largely accurate review otherwise.

Don't you love chess history?

chancho: <Jess> Charousek was Hungarian, so for the reviewer to call him the "Austrian Morphy" (as you said, the nickname belonged to Steinitz) was an epic fail on his part.

jessicafischerqueen: The reviewer was probably too busy laughing at his own jokes to notice this epic slip-
Jun-05-10  crawfb5: I don't know if you'll need to look for Russian games any time soon, but RUSBASE (games from 1920-1994) seems to have moved. I was digging around for something earlier and some of the old links at various places are broken. Here's a current link:

  jessicafischerqueen: Dear chess friends,
RUSBASE is a project to record all important chess tournaments and matches, held in Russia.
On the following pages you will find detailled information from chess events
Jun-05-10  crawfb5: <Jessilova> RUSBASE is useful, but it is neither complete (it was missing an old Levenfish game I was hunting) nor infallible (they have that Flohr-Suetin 1954 game that was being discussed here at CG a couple of months ago wrong -- as with most sources, they have it as a duplicate of a Korchnoi win in the same event). Still, an imperfect tool is better than no tool at all.
Jun-05-10  madlydeeply: what if that little microbe fellah eats ALL the oil in the whole world? Oh my.

Naw they just want to get paid for the clean up too.

I remember cabin fever it was lovely. That's back when I wasn't happy and i wanted society to be erased. I loved all that zombie doom stuff. now i'm totally happier. Actually, Zombies are so fookin' boring now.

jessicafischerqueen: well yes it doesn't help that every single movie made for the last five years is a Zombie movie.

Cabin Fever had good acting/directing/screenwriting and lots of tight "buns."

Just wait till they start "curing" people with nanobots.

That will be the start of the ooze.

Jun-05-10  Travis Bickle: Hey Jess they pushed the envelope so far with all these thousands of zombie movies they are now becoming philosophical horror movies. A new genre is born!

Jun-06-10  cormier: Quote of the Day

Well, I kind of split my life into two pieces. One was where my chess career lies. There, I kept my sanity, so to speak, and my logic. And the other was my religious life. ... But I still was studying chess. I wasn't just "trusting in God" to give me the moves.

heh that fake Nazi Zombie movie was actually better than most of the Zombie comedies I've seen. Maybe because it's hard to go wrong with the 10 minute time format.

GO BLACKHAWKs and they have songs to go with them how cool is that?

jessicafischerqueen: <Canyonero> thanks for those free chess books- I had some already but not others.

It's amazing how quickly the world of chessbooks has transferred to the internet.

And amazing how many of them seem to be in the public domain unless that's an illegal blog post you linked.

Which is fine with me since I already stole over 50,000 chess books.

Although I "threw most of them back," muck like in "catch release" flyfishing.

Fusilli: Hey, <Jess>, how are Koreans gearing up for the soccer world cup? Everybody talking about it? I am off to the Dominican Republic again tomorrow and will spend most of the world cup working in a remote town in the Dominican countryside. Dominicans are passionate about baseball, and care very little about soccer. I obviously chose the wrong time and place for my research!
