Best regards, Jess PS I can attest to the unreliability of "ratings" in long time control internet games on Yahoo, which is the bulk of my competitive chess activity. I have hooked absolute bears with very low ratings, and alternately, I've played players hundreds of points higher than me who offered almost no opposition. And ESPECIALLY- as you've pointed out, you can't tell ANYTHING AT ALL about someone's playing strength if they have a "provisional rating." That's for sure. By and large, however, over the hundreds of games I've played on Yahoo, if I select an opponent within a hundred points of my rating, give or take, I'm generally assured of a tough game that I still have some chance of winning.> THANKS ... for the thoughtfully, well-written post in my forum.
