Sep-16-10  Travis Bickle: Hi M'Lady Jessica! ; P I have another song that I think is an under-rated Beatles song. The 1st link is The Beatles record producer George Martin explaining how the song was recorded and just the the orchestra playing. The 2nd link is the finished song of 'She's Leaving Home'. This was amazingly done on 4 track stereo, where you couldn't make any mistakes when the 4 tracks of tape where getting loaded up with musical parts. The harmony between John & Paul is excellent! Also this was a 1st to bring an orchestra in for a rock band way back in 1966 - 67.

Sep-16-10  Travis Bickle: Jess I had to repost this because I put a damned mono version of the song instead of Stereo. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaghhh!!! Now you can hear all proper my Queen in stereo! ; P
Sep-16-10  Travis Bickle: Jess to balance it out I'll give you an under-rated John Lennon song at the time it was released in 1968 as the B side to Paul's #1 Hello Goodbye. When I was a kid most of my friends and I thought the song was just a throw-away I think because IMO it was about 10 years ahead of it's time.

Paul McCartney directed Magical Mystery Tour, this made for TV show to be viewed on a British Holiday. It was the story of a group of zany passengers & The Beatles going on a bus trip and getting pissed as Harrison called it, drunk in other words. At the time they had such bus trips in England.

What killed the movie was that The BBC in it's infinite wisdom broadcast a psychedelic film in black & white! The critics lambasted it & with their manager Brian Epstein now deceased it was the first time The Beatles ever failed, causing tension between Lennon & McCartney.

The album sold well but the film was a disaster. Years later Paul said he didn't understand why they didn't release Magical Mystery Tour as a feature film instead of a television show.

Jess please read TheQuarrymen58 on youtube beneath this song for a good explanation.

Sep-16-10  crawfb5: I got a new big database (5M games) yesterday. And yes, when you have a new hammer, every problem does look like a nail.

Anyway I have a new suspect to add to the mix for the Marshall 1944 simul game: Oscar Shapiro

My new base has a reputation for reliability (although I may have found a couple of errors, but I'll check on that later). It gives 15 Sept 1944 as the date of the game, but Black is listed as Shapiro, <O>, not Sam.

Oscar Shapiro lived for a long time in Washington, DC, but he might have been in New York for something. He supposedly made master while in his 70s, so maybe there is hope for me after all. Anyway, here's a draw of his against Santasiere back in the 1940s: O Shapiro vs Santasiere, 1946

I don't want to post anything yet to a player or game page, because at this point all it does is further muddy the waters. I double-checked <Chess Life> from 1944 and that's not the source for the simul game, no matter which Shapiro won.

Sep-16-10  hms123: "chutzpah" would be my choice because of its definition: A man kills his parents and asks for leniency because he is now an orphan.

I agree. If you don't know what a schmuck is then cross a Los Angeles highway blindfolded. You'll find out quick enough what a schmuck is.

...Why is TD always schlepping that accordion, no one wants to hear him play..?

Sep-16-10  achieve: Amsterdam local dialect is littered with Yiddish words, as the Jews are historically very much interwoven with the culture, business here, especially in Amsterdam (Diamonds, Banking, Music, etc.)...

so - my favorite Yiddish word is <aggenebbish>

My mom uses Yiddish words and expressions generously, still, so she's my main influence in that regard, heh

Curious here if the word is known in other areas of the world (specifically its "nebish" part ..;-)

Won't give the meaning away just yet...

Sep-16-10  therealbenjinathan: nebish is well known.

<JFQ> Are you looking for some Soltis book? I have this vague idea that you are??? The remainder store near me stopped getting everyman remainders and started getting Batsford remainders. There are a couple of his for 10 bucks.

Sep-16-10  technical draw: <crawfb5: I am <SHOCKED! SHOCKED! SHOCKED!> that chessplayers would pick any favorite Yiddish word other than <kibitz>>

...Oy! Vey! You're right <crawfb5>. Bunch of meshugana chessplayers, they don't know from Yiddish.

Sep-16-10  Russian Grandmasters: Well thanks for all the Yiddish lessons folks- more to come I suspect.

You never know when this will come in handy.

<Benji> I ordered Soltis' biography of Frank Marshall from Amazon but it was out of stock.

It is <crawfb5> who is looking for someone to check the book for some specific historical information that might be there.

Have you considered the possibility that the "Gnomes" were stolen and reconvened in the woods for the purposes of some hideous ritual?

http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/201...

I'm surprised the AP didn't add in such a speculation, which would have made an <entirely pointless> article into an <entirely irresponsible, but interesting> article.

I don't think AP uses human writers any more. Isn't the Associated Press just a computer program now?

chancho: So when is the unveiling of the next Chess video masterpizza of <Jess> the magnificent due to premiere?
Sep-17-10  Russian Grandmasters: <Canyonero> I still haven't got my new software to obey me- but luckily I have 8 of the next 9 days off of work thanks to <Chewing Socks>, the fabled Korean harvest festival holiday.

Also I put Pillsbury on hold right after I bought all the software because I want to redo the part that's finished with it.

In the meantime I started researching what was meant to be a brief "test" project because maybe people don't won't like the new software effects in which case I wouldn't redo Pillsbury.

Predictably, this brief test led to an addiction to Polish chess history.

So it might take a month more to finish the now not brief "test" project.

Sep-17-10  Travis Bickle: Hi Jess since you mention software problems I have problems with this Vista microsoft piece of garbage! Sep-17-10  Travis Bickle: Don't get me wrong Jess I liked that Genesis song you linked on my forum but I thought I heard The Bee Gee's sound in that song also.
Sep-17-10  Russian Grandmasters: <T-Dawg> I couldn't have gotten you wrong even if I wanted to.

You see I like the BeeGees!
