Jan-24-11  madlydeeply: I LIKE the Bb5 sicilian because it turns an off balance sicilian into a classical center game after c3 and d4. It turns it into a Ruy and sicilian players don't like that HAHA

So hey follow my advice and play like a hard core class "B" player HOORAY

  jessicafischerqueen: <madman>

Thanks for the <Ross Ice Shelf> quote, which is accurate.

One should perhaps add that FIDE awarded <Rossolimo> with the International Grandmaster title in 1953, at a time when there were only around 40-50 IGMs in the world.

<Martini and Rossi> stunned the chess world by thumping four strong opponents with his wacky <3.Bb5????> at <Bad Gastein>, back when he was still a Greek/Russian Frenchman.

It's a MAN'S life in Class "B."

Except when I play.

Jan-24-11  madlydeeply: Guess what though during a simul i actually made Kosteniuk stop and think! I'll find a photo.

I did resign three moves later.

!!!

I'd really love to see that photo- do you have it on your hard drive?

I don't ever- ever- navigate to Facebook.

It is teeming with "Active X" code that can very easily be used- by GHOD knows who- to seriously compromise your web security.

However, you can email me the photo as a JPEG image at

jessicafischerqueen@yahoo.com

NOTICE- that's a new YAHOO account because my old Hotmail account was hacked by a VIAGRA salesman.

True story. He sent "auto forward" VIAGRA ads to most of my address book, including to my mother, and the CG.com administrators.

Not only is this a hilarious documentary on <Tesla>, it's also considerably more accurate than the vast majority of Tesla "biographies" on youtube, most of which are written by UFO, ESP, and Conspiracy enthusiasts.

(kind of pleased with myself for remembering which video I heard it in).

Jan-25-11  Travis Bickle: Hi Jess this was the greatest football player that ever played the game, Dick Butkus. He played in the mid 60's to early 70' and would have played longer but both of his knees were gone.

Dick Butkus's intimidating ferociousness and then the next generation '85 Super Bowl Championship winners is what The Chicago Bears used to be all about. And then The cheap and prideless McCaskey's took over the team.

jessicafischerqueen: <izimbra> thank you! What an intriguing version, with the hip-hop added in. Any way of knowing who did that mix?
Jan-25-11  izimbra: <JFQ> Some (all?) musicians are credited right at the end of the clip. I believe that this is not a *mix* of the other version, but rather a new performance of the same composition with similar synthesizers and different samples overlaid (e.g. much less vocal chorus and some Middle Eastern sounding stuff at the beginning). That's my thought, but I'd have to dig into it a bit to check if there were any samples at all from the other version. Perhaps the musicians are friends of the rider, Matt Wilhelm.

Hip hop music is actually the traditional accompaniment for that type of BMX freestyle, in compositions and the most popular youtube videos. For example:

The CG "Challenge" games just need to be out.

It would rock if it brings more chess folk to CG.

Jan-25-11  Travis Bickle: Jess this is the video I wanted to show you on #51 Dick Butkus.

24 ♖d1-d5! <interference: c5,h5>

click for larger view

24 ♖d1-d5! is a *beautiful* tactical shot by Aronian, on the theme of <INTERFERENCE>. 24 ♖d1-d5! both attacks the undefended Black h5-queen *and* <BLOCKS THE GUARD LINE> from the Black h5-queen to the loose Black c5-knight that Her Majesty is protecting.

After 24 ... ♗e6x♖d5 25 ♕b6x♘c5, Aronian then uses a <PIN AGAINST AN UNDEFENDED PIECE>, the <UNDEFENDED> Black h5-queen, to win material.

37 ♗b6-c7! <line-closing: b7,d7; clearance: b6>

click for larger view

The lovely Sachdev's 37 ♗b6-c7! is a <DOUBLE ATTACK> based on the combination of *two* tactical themes:

1) <LINE-CLOSING>: 37 ♗b6-c7! <BLOCKS THE GUARD LINE> from the loose Black b7-rook to the Black d7-queen which is <PROTECTING> it

2) <SQUARE CLEARANCE>: 37 ♗b6-c7! vacates the b6-<FORKING SQUARE> for the White c4-knight to take advantage of the <ALIGNMENT> Black c8-rook + Black d7-queen if the Black b7-rook moves to safety on a7.

So after 37 ♗b6-c7!, White is threatening

1) 38 ♕e4x♖b7 based on the <BLOCKING OF THE GUARD LINE> b7-d7

2) 37 ... ♖b7-a7 38 ♘c4-b6 <FORKING> the Black c8-rook,d7-queen

It's deja vu all over again. :-)

Looks like Shirov needs to work on his <INTERFERENCE> tactic and be more careful of White rooks landing on the d5-square. :-)

Jan-26-11  achieve: <Jess> I haven't found a clip of the Rubinstein interview I mentioned, hopefully I will later; so until then here's one of my favourite Mozart piano concertos, played by an aging virtuoso <Vladimir Horowitz>, but really, what is "virtuoso" about this performance is the style, the warmth, grace and solemn tone through his unique touch and artistry in combination with a fantastic orchestra conducted by <Maria Giulini>:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Lqd... (2nd movement, but worth listening to all three movements in sequence of course -- btw this 2nd movement is a perfect peace to use in accompaniment, support of, one of your historic chess videos.)

Jan-26-11  madlydeeply: Another tesla vid but not as funny.

http://io9.com/5584831/a-brief-hist...

My stepfather (elementary science teacher) told me that DC was dangerous and that Norway used DC instead of AC. (He went to Norway in the fifties maybe they used DC then). Then he showed me how safe AC was by grabbing a black and white wire with either hand! HA! At the same time y'know what i mean? HA

Well then i decided ac was safe and didn't turn off the electricity for my next job which was removing a bathroom fan... Sparks and explosion ha ha! Ah memories....

He used to also have a generator that he called "old shocker" and lined up his nine year old kids, have them hold hands, and each end of the circle would grab an "old shocker" terminal... he'd send some electricity through them...then tighten the circle a bit and the electricity was slightly stronger. i suppose teaching them about "resistance". What a freak!! He really had the showmanship going i remember.... he'd throw his useless half paralyzed hand on "old shocker" for "stability" and grunt and wheeze and crank up the old tired squeaky creaky pencil sharpener looking device known as OLD SHOCKER

Hmm this could be a lovely little folk tune, djyes

Old Man Shocker...
