| Jun-15-18 | | Dr Winston OBoogie: Bobby Robson was a special man and a special manager, I was just talking to my dad about him. At his last ever football game, he got wheeled out with his face all bloated and distorted from cancer, half blind and deaf, for a kinda tribute match and the last words he said at a football ground were "How did Gascoigne play?". Awwww bless him. Gazza burst out in tears when he heard that, everyone loved Bobby Robson his funeral had football royalty from around the world paying tribute. God bless that man, they don't make em like Bobby anymore :) Plenty of footy in the cafe. You should join us! |

<O'Footy> Thanks- I just took a spin in there and some very interesting comments from people who know 10 times more World Cup footy history than me. I also noticed the lack of spoilers which I thought was very respectful- but I am now scared of spoilers because I realize that my TIVO telly is not necessarily offering me the best matches, so I will have to wait on a one day delay to download them from my special "footy site." I enjoyed <Russia v Saudis> but I'd rather the TIVO had force fed me one of the other matches, or let me choose. Always a day behind, me... If I had a million pounds I would buy a powerful satellite dish and buy the BBC ITV BEIN SKY package of the stars and watch my footy with proper English commentators. Here in Canada FOX seems to have bought the rights to the World Cup. They are far from the worst commentators but the only problem is they are not English and it's not proper footy without proper English commentators. <Thierry Henri> and <Gary Neville> being the best in my not so humble opinion. Although <Thierry's> English accent sounds suspiciously French to me... |
|
| Jun-15-18 | | Tiggler: Fantastic brilliant game 3-3 Spain and Portugal. Can't remember a better World Cup game in 50+ years. Spain will win it all: they would even beat <MagnusCarlsen>. Forget all my previous cynicism, I have seen the light. |
|
| Jun-15-18 | | Boomie: <Tiggler> Before reporting results, check to see if it will be a spoiler. For example, I'm watching the Portugal-Spain match as I type. I like the way both teams play with a controlled aggression. However, I don't know the rules so I have no clue what is going on. |
|
| Jun-15-18 | | Boomie: Curiously, my best friend in high school was the junior soccer player of the year in Washington. He was extraordinarily quick and blazingly fast. He played the man in the middle for the U. of Wash. when they were ranked 3rd in the country. I noticed that his passes never bounced. They seemed to float above the turf. Unfortunately he injured his leg that season and had to retire. |
|
| Jun-16-18 | | Tiggler: <Boomie> OK sorry about that, but I posted more than 12 hours after the game was finished. I'm curious where you could be, since I don't think that you were under a rock. |
|
| Jun-16-18 | | Tiggler: OK, I noticed the date stamp. It can't have been more than 9 hours. I guess you are in Australia, and you probably just saw France-Australia live. |
|
| Jun-16-18 | | Boomie: <Tiggler> Good guess but I'm a Seattle guy. They were replaying the game or something. Notice that our gracious queen frequently tapes games to watch later. In my case, the score was 3-2 when I saw your post. Wondering if Ronaldo got the hat trick for the tie kept my interest. Does that guy ever miss an opportunity? |
|
| Jun-16-18 | | Tiggler: <Boomie> You are in the same time zone as me, but I saw the game live. Retired guy with nothing better to do during the day but watch footie. <They are far from the worst commentators but the only problem is they are not English and it's not proper footy without proper English commentators.>
<jfq> I see we disagree about the spelling of footie, but at least we don't call it soccer. Last I heard Thierry Henri was not English, but when he does speak English it is not American English. I am used to the latter, except when I hear about strikers getting shots "on frame" or about midfield players "reversing field" or about the game ending in a "tie". That makes me mute the sound or switch to the Spanish language channel. |

<Teem>! I didn't know you were watching the footy. Thanks for letting people know about spoilers, but in fact I don't have time to watch many games. I've only had time to watch the first one and I posted the wrong score. So Puyallup is actually another name for Seattle? This makes sense to me because both are <FIST NATIONS NAMES>. Possibly from the Salish or Oompahpah. I'm not a North America First Nations expert, but I frequently tell people on the internet that I am. Bad news <Teem>. I left my laptop with some external hard drives at the airport and nobody can find it. Sadly, all of the BORG are gone. I've been trying to remember what I had and I've replaced a lot of it but I haven't gotten around to BJORN BORG yet. |

<Tigga> Don't worry about posting spoilers because I just don't have time to watch many games- so I watch the nightly highlights on the news only. During EPL season I watch every <Spurs> game without fail, and typically I only get access to them a day or two after they are played. Curiously, I *did* in fact think <Tim> lived under a rock. In Puyallup lore the "Screaming Rock" is a noted gathering place for Sasquatch. Here is scientific proof- the "Puyallup Screamer": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3sd... <Tim> (Boomie) is a chess bon vivant and noted Bigfoot researcher. He has posted many photos of the footprint casts he has made over the years, but I forget where he posted them. Also, in his spare time he's a Mexican, which is why I sometimes call him <Teem>. |

<Tigga> <Thierry> really is a superb commentator, despite his outrageous French accent. I like his analysis so much that I have actually downloaded pre game shows and manually cut the speed in half so I can make out what he says. This also helps whilst listening to another of my favorite pundits, <Jamie Aircraft Carragher>, who I'm told has an outrageous Scouser accent which I mistook for Scotch. Either way, <Aircraft Carragher> has never pronounced a single consonant in his career. Not one. |

This is the "Elk Meadows Screamer" for any Bigfoot enthusiasts who might secretly want to hear it. It's this exact scream that Bobcat Goldthwaite had his Bigfeet use in "Willow Creek," his excellent Bigfoot horror movie. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ded... |

| Jun-17-18 | | Boomie: <Jessie>
On a rare serious note, I applaud you for taking care of your Mom. You may recall I did the same darn thing about 20 years ago. Although the time off killed my career (along with the dot bomb and the downed towers), I wouldn't go back to change it. I like the idea that I gave back. Plus there were many happy moments that more than made up for the difficulties. Anyways, good on ya. |

Thanks <Tim> it is still new to me and we are working out a routine and such. I would say it is quite a bit more difficult than my career, but it feels a lot more significant. I spent 11 years away from my family except for one vacation home a year. Now I can see my brother and sister and sister in law and nieces regularly again, as well as my Mom. Everyone is pitching in to help her remain as independent as she would like for as long as possible. |

| Jun-17-18 | | harrylime: Cool to see your forum "breathing" again <Jezza> ! A few points !
1. Christian Ronaldo has now entered my pantheon of UNTOUCHABLE greats in football history. That free kick against the Spanish had the WOW factor.. the THRILL factor.. which makes the BEAUTIFUL GAME er, beautiful! 2. VAR ... It's used in other sports, but in Football , although essential and necessary, it's just open to too much subjectivity in interpreting the rules of the game. Will cite examples another time. 3. NON Russia World Cup Stuff..
Have you seen this ? A player taking a Throw in a good 3 metres in side the football pitch .. lol Cardiff City vs Reading • Shadow Line 😱

And this? The Battle of Santiago. Possibly the most infamous game of football in footballs' illustrious history... This vid gives the background info which in itself is fascinating, as well as highlighting the brutality on show in the actual game. 1962 WC G2 R2 Chile - Italy (02.06.1962)

<Hozza> lol Yes <Ronaldo> was magnificent in that match, but I tell you what- Both of <Diego Costa's> goals were better quality than the first two goals of <Ronaldo's>. Two of Ronaldo's goals were a penalty and then shooting it directly into the arms of <De Hey! What are you Doing?>, who promptly dropped it into his own net. Both of <Diego's> goals showed the highest quality, making the punter think HOW IN THE HELL DID HE DO THAT? On his first goal, he single handedly took on 4 players and still scored, from more than 20 yards out, twisting and turning. I've long thought <Diego Costa> has been underrated. When people talk of the 'greatest strikers' do they remember <Diego>? If so, where do they put him on the list? |
|
Jun-17-18
 | | saffuna: Yes, I remember Diego among greatest strikers. Different Diego, though. Diego Costa is certainly an outstanding player, I guess taking the role David Villa used to have for Spain. Tough customer, though. Seems to look for confrontation. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen:
<Jim> That's said with your usual politeness, but certainly true. I would say that <Diego Costa> is a dirty player. Using the VAR, I think the ref should have called back his goal that started with him winning the ball by deliberately smashing a Portuguese player in the face with his elbow. He is, also, a great player. He has done more than enough for club and country for enough years for me, at least, to regard him as a great footballer, one who should be remembered. I want to note something else about <Ronaldo>. I have watched a lot of football over the last five years and I think the stats will bear me out on this- maybe as long as three years ago he lost his touch on scoring from set pieces. And yet nobody, including the gaffer, ever made a move to have another player to take over set piece duty, or even just have a chance on a given set piece. <Ronaldo> took every set piece free kick in every game I ever saw him play. I remember several pundits remarking on this as well. I will tell you this- <Ronaldo> scored a magnificent set piece goal in this match. I do not remember ever seeing him score from a set piece before this. He must have though. He used to be a set piece ace, if I remember correctly. I haven't seen all his games by any means but of the ones I did see over the past few years... |

Oh and I did manage to watch all of <Argentina v Iceland> as well. It was ok, but I don't think the FOX announcers should have said "Iceland beats Argentina in a 1-1 draw." That's disrespectful to both sides and it's also clumsy "humor." They kept chortling to each other over this until I wanted to smack them. All credit to <Iceland> for their historic draw- isn't that enough? |
|
| Jun-18-18 | | Tiggler: Argentina's show ponies' futile efforts to get past Iceland with fancy footwork and short passes were a joke. Messi looked particularly like a liability. It seems that the only thing bothering him was that he has fallen 3 goals behind Ronaldo for the golden boot award. |
|

Tunis anyone?
Jess probably went or will go apoplexic when she sees Tunisia vs England. I don't know what "apoplexic" means but that's how she'll go. |
|
| Jun-18-18 | | Boomie: <Jessticle: Sadly, all of the BORG are gone> I have season one and 1-4 of season two if you need to rebuild your set. How will we ever find out who is doing what to whom at Christianberg? Borgie Buggie Boogers! |

SEPARATED AT BIRTH: Who is the man in the photo contest- second row from the top, second picture beside Capablanca there. The photo is in agadmator's video here at 0:28 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KJ... I said it was David Bronstein but another punter said it was Samuel Reshevsky. After looking around a bit, I wasn't sure any more so I uploaded this video here: YOU BE THE JUDGE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rkh... |
