 | | keypusher: <OhioChessFan: To my surprise, I don't get the sense anyone is steering toward the Armageddon games.> Well, except for these guys. :-)
Grischuk vs W So, 2019 Seriously, though, I think it would be hard to tell, because in events of this strength people tend to play pretty unambitiously with Black anyway. It would be interesting to check the average length of classical games in this event versus last year's Altibox (or tournaments of similar strength). You might want to save some of your strength for Armageddon. But if they're doing that, it certainly doesn't jump off the page. I suspect most of the players just don't know whether Armageddon favors them (or favors a particular color) so they neither steer for Armageddon nor avoid it. If you go by rating, MC has a much bigger advantage over this field in rapid play than in classical. He's also a very strong attacker in blitz, so heading for Armageddon games seems like it might be a good strategy for him. But he doesn't seem to have done it. I'm curious to see how his classical game with Ding goes, because Ding matches up as well with Carlsen in classical as anyone playing today, but in blitz and rapid Carlsen has a huge ratings edge. MVL currently outrates Carlsen in blitz, and in M Vachier-Lagrave vs Carlsen, 2019, he didn't seem adverse to going to an Armageddon game. But it didn't work out for him. Top GMs with White against Carlsen often play for a draw. Here, you'd think they wouldn't do that, because then they have to play him in Armageddon. But in our two-game sample, that doesn't seem to have happened either. (In the Aronian game, of course White should have won, but only because Magnus tried to gin up a coffeehouse attack against Levon's quiet anti-Sicilian.) |

 | | keypusher: So, another five draws in classical in round six, and white scored 2-3 in Armageddon. Overall 7 decisive classical games out of 30, and White has scored 10-13 in Armageddon. |

 | | keypusher: <OCF> I had the sense that Vishy and Shak both aimed for Armageddon today, and it backfired. Carlsen definitely didn’t play for a draw in classical. He was in some trouble in both games today, but came out on top in the end. |
|
| Jun-10-19 | | Count Wedgemore: Yes, Carlsen had a difficult classical game against Ding Liren today. And once again, he was not able to pose any big problems for Ding to solve over the board. This has started to become a pattern; Magnus never seems to get good positions out of the opening in his classical encounters with China's no.1 player. They've now played 10 classical games against each other, I think. 10 draws. And in most of them, it is Ding who has had the upper hand. I suspect that Carlsen does not want Ding to be on the other side of the table in the WCC Match next year. I think he would prefer a rematch against Caruana instead. |

| Jun-11-19 | | rogge: Hi <kp>, several of the players (including Carlsen) have been reported to be sick/unwell the last couple of days. That might have caused "duller" games, with players only hoping to survive the day. |

Sad to say, that was a pretty good game by my standards. But an engine just tears it to shreds.> I think this is a very interesting area of study. I've found pre-computer games of mine from the 1970's, where in one I
made an error at move 3 (which I would call picking a variation) but no other errors in a 42 move game. My opponent
a 2100 made no errors, we drew.
(I had an 1850-ish rating)
In another game where we both were rated about 1850, I made no errors, my opponent 1 error. (from about a zero eval to +.3 in my favor, so not a large error) after about 52 moves we drew with no other errors. While I considered these "good" games,
I had no idea we were playing that well. |
|
| Aug-06-19 | | Parachessus: <diceman> Impressive!
What does it mean if my Stockfish app gives a +.8 eval to one side? Is that a slight advantage or significant advantage? |
|
| Aug-06-19 | | diceman: <Parachessus: <diceman> Impressive! What does it mean if my Stockfish app gives a +.8 eval to one side? Is that a slight advantage or significant advantage?> Id call it slight, but it really matters
where it is (less important in the opening) and how deep the search is.
(the 30-ply zone is a good depth) |

Answer of <diceman> was stupid , I would say - one has to start the process here and now , instead of waiting to reach extraordinarily high level of intelligence first. His answer was half-educated , I would say. No offense

 | | keypusher: <diceman> That's impressive, but then you're a lot stronger than I am. Hard for me to believe you weren't underrated at 1850. The type of game can make a big difference, of course. The game I posted below was sharp and we were quickly out of book, giving us both lots of chances to miss tactics. Probably my most accurate OTB game was a draw with a 2450 in the 80s. But it wasn't as good as it sounds. It was a Czech Benoni where he allowed me to get a knight outpost against a bad bishop, like so (leaving out the heavy pieces): click for larger viewHard to screw that up. (But see Lasker vs Tarrasch, 1916!) I don't have my scores for most of my old OTB games, but online games of mine that stand up to engine examination generally have been quite dull. |

| Aug-28-19 | | Nisjesram: Reposted from rogoff :
Liberal posters in this forum are likely to agree with what I am going to post in this post , however , I want to know what non partisan sane right wingers like <keypusher> think about it. Thank you <keypusher>, if you please : <I have long advocated a plebiscite in Kashmir, allowing the Kashmiris to split way if they so choose, as the only moral, liberal solution. Alas, all political parties reject that…Continuing with Article 370 of the Constitution — as many liberals and political parties want — would mean continuing the decades-old military occupation of an unwilling people, replete with human rights violations, with no end in sight. This is, frankly, a non-liberal non-solution. ....
.Assuming that the courts uphold the BJP’s move, what will Kashmir’s future be? I see three possible guiding scenarios — China’s relatively peaceful takeover of Tibet; China’s herding of one million Muslim Uighurs into concentration camps to control Xinjiang province; and Israel’s relentless creation of Jewish settlements on the Palestinian West Bank..... .....The most likely BJP approach is to mimic Israel’s Jewish settlements in Palestine. Fortified Hindu settlements plus high walls and check-posts can keep spreading, gradually converting Muslim-majority areas into isolated regions cut off from one another. Settlements will probably start by carving out Hindu-majority areas in and around Srinagar, just as Israel did in and around Jerusalem. Later settlements can be expanded to rural areas by acquiring entire villages and giving this land free to ex-servicemen willing to settle there and act as a trained self-defence force. A demographic takeover can be much faster in Kashmir than in Palestine.... ....
This will, of course, mean a militant Kashmiri rebellion backed by Pakistan and other Muslim states. It will mean decades of violence, as in Palestine. The BJP is ready for that. So are many other parties. Do not expect Congress resistance to be overwhelming. After all, the BJP is completing a takeover that Nehru began> https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com... |

 | | keypusher: <nisjesram> I don't have an opinion worth knowing on the topic. I don't know anything about Kashmir and not a whole lot about India. Self-determination seems like a good idea in principle, but if a U.S. state announced that it was holding a plebiscite to decide whether to withdraw from the United States, I assume the federal government would not allow the plebsicite to go forward. That question was settled by our 1861-1865 civil war, apparently. |
|
| Aug-29-19 | | Nisjesram: Ok , what about the parallel between Kashmir and West bank , if you please.....
....
Author says that both are immoral...they should both get a choice...
....
2)I understand your point about usa states....thanks. The difference/point of author is that the status of all other states in India is the same as those of usa states (presumably)....
...however , Kashmir is an anamoly...all other states combined together freely to form India in 1947 . However , it is controversial/dubious to assert that kashmir joined india willingly....it was a complicated scenario....
...So says the author.
Thank you
