  Check It Out: After it's overnight run, Shredder 12's top three moves after <17...Re8> were:

18.e3
18.a3
18.e4

all with the same eval:

(+0.15) d=23

It's (black's) response to all three moves is the same:

18...Be7

18.a3 and 18.e3 simply transposed after that by playing each other at move 19. The line then runs out:

Shredder 12 prefers 19.e5 here, but the resulting open positions look very good for black's bishop pair. I posted this analysis previously.

I forced 19.c5 at <ajile>'s suggestion.

19...Ra8 (+0.36) d=24

<Other black options: 19...Qc7, 19...Rb8>

20.Bh3

<Other white options: 20.e5, 20.a3>

To my eye this looks like a tough position to win because the pawns are so static. Here's a run out line by Shredder 12:

Active rooks for black, but paying for that with a passive Bb7. Not that bad as it is looking round about move 19.

Not sure what to make of this position. Black has got a-file pressure and his LSB outside the pawn chain, but has the weak backward e pawn on an open file.

Oct-22-10  lost in space: Here my findings in the following line:

Method: Sliding forward and backward with d > 25 (sometimes up to 30), deep fritz 11

17. Qb3 < b5>
An ugly, unpositional move, making Bb7 to a big pawn for the rest of the game. The only question is, if Black can organize counter-play on the a-file or not. This could compensate the obvious bad Bb7

18. c5 a5 19. a3 Ra8 (first rook on a file)

20. e4 Qc7 21. e5 Be7 22. Ra1
(22. Qc3 (thanks <whiteshark> for posting your analyze in my forum; here a modification) axb4 (22...Ra6 23. Nb3 24. axb4 24. axb4 Rfa8 25. Ra1; +0,20) 23. axb4 Ra4 24. Nb3 Rfa8 25. Na5 Nb8 26. Bf1 Na6 27. Ra1 Bd8: +0,30 (27...Nxb4 28. Rxa4 bxa4 29. Nxb7 Qxb7 30. Rb1; +0,5))

22...Ra7 23. Qc3! Rfa8 (second rook on the a-file)

24. Nb3! Key move. Forcing black to close the queen side and loosing all counterplay or open the a-file too early.

24...axb4 25. axb5 Rxa1
(25...Ra4 26. Na5! (Key move to close the a file) 26...Rxa1 27. Rxa1 and white is more than fine)

26. Rxa1 Rxa1+
(26...Ra4 Na5!)

27. Qxa1 Bd8 28. Bf1 Bc8 29. Bd3 Nf8 30. Kg2 Qd7 31. h4 (only 0,30)

Black is completely helpless, no couter-play at all. I would not lose this position against Carlsen OTP.
