Oct-16-10  MTuraga: Garech: I suggest that we analyze the individual phases instead of the whole game.

I gather that you don't want to discuss 16...Bb7.

Which line are you analyzing? Do you want to explore 16...Qe7? so that we can start our analysis without any loss of time.

Oct-16-10  DPLeo: I saw your request on the main page to go deeper with 16...Bb7. I'll start looking at your phase 1 line and report back later.
Oct-16-10  Garech: <Mturaga>

Okay - here is one example. In your first line you posted:

<I analyzed the following variations in-depth 16. b4
(A) 16…Qe7 17. Qb3 bb7 18. e4 g5 19. e5
(here engine room 2 (ER2) variation says 19. Re1 which I shall analyze next) 19…Bg7 Here there are a few branches to consider: 20 Re1; 20. cxd5 (A1) 20. Re1 g4 21. Nh4 Qg5 (threatens the knight on e2)>

Instead of 21...Qg5 black can play h5, which Stockfish follwed up with best play (on shallow depth - maybe you can find improvements):

...h5 22.f4 gxf3 23.Nhxf3 Bh6

click for larger view

followed up with ...f6 a few moves later and perhaps Kh8 and Rg8, with good counterplay. This is risky of course but much more active than the continuation you gave.

I will look at the others in due course.

I'm enjoying our debate! I hope you are too.

Oct-16-10  DPLeo: I plugged 16...Bb7 17.c5 into Stockfish and let it run to 33 ply.

Stockfish-191-64-ja:
<Depth = 33>
   -0.16 17. ... a5 18.a3 Ra8 19.e4 Qc7 20.Re1 axb4 21.axb4 bxc5 22.bxc5 Ra3

Stockfish only agrees with the phase 1 line (posted in engine room 2) up to 18.a3, then it deviates to the line above and evaluates it as slightly better for black. I don't know if we can count on her help with sticking to the dream line.

If she does play 16...Bb7 it doesn't look like 17.c5 will be our best option.

Oct-16-10  MTuraga: Garech: The active continuation is steadily becoming advantageous for White.

(0.9) So White need not worry.

Both kings are exposed and black's LSB is still boxed in.

Oct-16-10  bayowulf: <MTuraga> I entered the whole line into Aquarium for IDeA analysis (using 4 stockfish engines and analysing each position for 10 minutes - I think 23 ply was achieved in the average position). It analyzed starting from the winning last positions and working forward.

So overall- after 16..Bb7 it scores the bestmove as 17 e4(0.00) and 17 c5 is scored as (-0.11).

Proceeding along your line, only looking at improvements for black (ignoring improvements for white and ignoring transpositions) - the first is 19..Bb7 (-0.04) rather than Bb5 (0.00) - not a very big difference but a possible deviation anyway.

A bigger difference is 24..bxc5 (0.00) versus 24..Rd8(+0.29 - a big + for white). I think black would never choose Rd8 here.

So phase one is solid up till move 19 and possibly to move 24.

I am still directing my machine analysis along these lines...

First impressions:

17...g5 is a bit surprising. Well, the game is still closed, so gaining space on the kingside, asuming we will close the queenside up, makes sense. If we want to exploit this 'provocation' it will surely open files...

17...Be7/Re8 are the most likely candidate moves, strengthening the position and prepairing central counter-stroke

17...Kh8 looks like a computer waiting move
