Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

   Jun-10-22 L T Magee vs E L Holland, 1948 (replies)

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: Should have expected it from Valverde. But Ryan Perry shoulda known better.

Nothing much going right for the Tigers so far in this series. They pretty much have to get eight or nine solid innings out of Doug Fister tomorrow, and find some hitting. Right now, there seems no doubt Texas is a more balanced and deeper team.

WannaBe: Did you notice, that when the banner/letter carriers for Detroit came out, before the team, it spelled S-N-O-I-L.

Good thing they didn't spell it LOINS.

Phony Benoni: That's still better than how many people keep spelling the city "Detriot", and not only accidentally, I fear.

Don't mind me today. I'm already in a grouchy mood, and it's not getting any better. Standard Nigerian OIL can't stop the run.

WannaBe: The Lions are only down by single-digit at half time, I'm not sure if they know how to play come-back from only single digit down.

Oct-10-11  Thanh Phan: <Phony Benoni> How are the Archive searches now that more and more "News" sites Offer Pay per View for the Archive Search Results? Have found this a bit of frustration, lol

Phony Benoni: <Thanh Phan> I hardly bother with them, due to the fees. I can agree with users helping to subsidize the costs of creating and maintaining the sites, but the amounts demanded seem far too exorbitant.

Of course, I'm not closely familiar with the cost structure involved, and the fees might be necessary. But I'm not that desperate for the information.

Yet.

Oct-11-11  playground player: <crawfb5> In your game, I think Black would have been better off if he'd played c5 on move #4 rather than #6, after your Queen was on the loose. Who knows? What works in one's local chess club might not work in a masters' tournament.
Oct-11-11  crawfb5: Sometimes school or public libraries subscribe to news archive services. That's how I finally got into the full range of the New York Times archives. Prior to that, I was restricted to the free archives up to around 1921 or so. Of course if you're trying to access foreign news archives, that's probably not available.

I will say that in my use of the NY Times archives, many of the articles I've used so far would not have been worth "buying" based on the useful information I obtained. In researching a tournament, I usually only get the date of the round, the pairings, the results (minus any adjournments), the opening, and number of moves made. Sometimes there's a game score or two, but not that often.

Phony Benoni: I really need to check more carefully what we have available here, but I know we're weak on newspapers. We do have a complete run of the New York Times on microfilm, but that's, well, so twentieth-century, you know? Worse yet, I have to actually be in the Library to use it. Almost like working.
Oct-11-11  crawfb5: <PB> I have online <searchable> access to the full run of NY Times courtesy of the CT state library. I finally got a <city> card so I could get a <state> card for a library an hour or so away I will probably never visit, but life these days is about what you can do at odd hours from your own computer, isn't it?

So I can check for things for you if need be.

Phony Benoni: <crawfb5> I'll keep that in mind, but I don't know how useful the NYT will be where I am now (mid-1950s). Helms' column in the BDE began to shrink during World War II; he did only brief reports and almost completely stopped publishing games. I would guess he wasn't doing much for the NYT at that time either.

Besides, the Chess Life and Chess Review reports are provinding plenty of information. For instance, the New Orleans 1954 event was almost cancelled as a result of the Brown vs. Board of Education decision. That came in May, and the reaction in Louisiana was severe with the legislature quickly passing new segregation laws that, in effect, barred African Americans from entering and playing in the US Open.

The USCF eventually decided to hold the event anyway so that the local organizers would not lose their shirts. New Orleans had actually been the second choice that year, stepping in when the bid was taken away from Herman Steiner in Hollywood because of a disagreement with the USCF over holding a <GASP!> class tournament, which was obviously a Commie innovation.

It all sounds outrageous today, but that was a long time ago. However USCF politics was particularly nasty at the time, so I guess some things never change.

Of late, we have bargains with some few to gather information on a week basis, there are extra costs each month

Yet the value of Correct information are more then provide the actual costs in return for the help of having those info at hand

Take care and many happy holidays! Thanh Phạn

WannaBe: I better post this before the Tex-Det game 4 starts.

SF-Det this Sunday, in my opinion, is the game of the early games, Detroit is favoured by 5, or 6, depending on which casino or web site you visit.

The game of the afternoon, will be Saints-TB, see if the young upstart TB can handle a hot NO.

The 'lock' of the week, is Dal-NE, Patriots currently favoured by 7 points, I think 13.5 is probably a more reasonable line.

I feel Romo will be lucky if he lasts into the second half, with his sore ribs, a couple of hits, and he will be done for the game. Possible go on IR for the next 2 month.

Take NE to cover the spread. Okay, about an hour before first pitch!

Oct-12-11  Jim Bartle: I see Ichiro had 6,779 at bats in his first ten years in the majors. That has to be one of the highest totals ever.
