 | | WannaBe: That tree is now fully funded. I have covered the remaining amount. It's the least I can do for Mr. <Phony Benoni>. |

 | | sachistu: Regarding my kibitz from Dec 7,2022... The tree dedication is planned for June 21,2023 at McNichols Campus (aka the main campus) at the University of Detroit Mercy in Detroit. It is scheduled to begin at 1:30pm, with a brief ceremony followed by a light reception inside the library. For anyone living in the Detroit area and wishing to attend, there will also be an opportunity for anyone attending to say something during the ceremony. The tree is expected to be planted prior to the ceremony, which will be a timesaver for those attending. The former dean of Detroit Mercy, Margaret Auer, is slated to read the text of the plaque, which will be placed at the base of the tree. The text will read:
David W. Moody
1951 - 2022
Cataloging Librarian
Chess Aficionado
Renowned for His
Wealth of Knowledge
I realize most of us are not in close proximity to Detroit; however, anyone planning on attending can get in touch with Kris McLonis, so that she can plan for enough refreshments. Her email address is:

Dec-05-23 | | edroche1111: I played in the US Open in 1969 at Aspen. I beat S. Levine in the last round. Perhaps you can fill that result into the cross table. Thanks- Ed Roche |

 | | perfidious: <edroche1111>, Bet David would if he could. Not sure I can, but certainly will if at all possible. On a side note: did you play in western Mass in the mid-late 1970s? If so, we met in the Eastfield Mall Open at Springfield in spring 1977. You were 1900+ then and I managed to win vs your Gruenfeld in the 4.Nf3 Bg7 5.Bg5 line. |

 | | LIFE Master AJ: Buckets of ______!
David was a good person, I counted him as a friend. (We even chatted on the phone a few times when I lived at Chapin's Landing.) I found his POTD ... indeed, ALL his game collections ... to be invaluable!!!!!! I had a minor stroke in 2019. I could not remember his rating so I looked him up on the USCF website. It says on his player profile that: "This player is deceased." I literally think I went into shock. I ran into the bathroom fearing I might ... you know. What a freaking crummy way to find out that I had lost a friend and the CG group had lost one of our most valuable contributors! RIP David W. Moody |
|
Oct-19-24 | | Resignation Trap: <LIFE Master AJ>: I was a frequent opponent and traveling companion to David for many years. He had diabetes and kidney disease in his later years. Some of the best years and tournaments of my life were spent with him. For many years, he depended on other chess players for transportation in order to attend tournaments. He did not drive his own car until the mid 1980s.
His favorite tournament every year was the U.S. Open, and in 1992, it actually took place in his home town of Dearborn, MI. His documentation of various U.S. Open tournaments is extensive here on www.chessgames.com. |

 | | Check It Out: Happy birthday, <Phony Benoni>, you are missed. |
|
Nov-08-24 | | stone free or die: Nice of you to remember him <CIO>. Of course I second the sentiment. Some of the most productive periods of the Bistro were guided by his steady, wise and humble leadership. |

 | | FSR: <Phony Benoni> was a sterling human being and a great contributor to this site. Him being honored as POTD is long overdue. |
|
Nov-08-24
 | | perfidious: If David was never accorded the honour of <Player of the Day> till now, I too am pleased to see this. My wish is that it would have taken place while he was alive. |
|
Nov-08-24
 | | Sally Simpson: Just notice Phony Benoni is the 'Player of the Day' if you go hawking around old threads look out for his posts. You will not be disappointed. He had a pleasant laid back dry sense of humour and the knack of condensing a post into a few good sentences. Dave answering a punter who said a Blackburne - Steinitz game played in 1862 was of a 'poor quality.' "Of course, many 19th century games are going to be of "poor" quality to today's players.
But, paradoxically, the "average" player will learn more from games like this than from a masterpiece from Fischer or Kasparov or Carlsen.
You have to master the simple ideas behind games like this before you can comprehend the subtler ideas of today's super-GMs." Probably took less than two minutes to write but it would not look out of place if it was printed on the back of a book of 19th century games. And note the inoffensive content. The original poster thanked him! R.I.P. Dave. |

 | | HeMateMe: I didn't know until his passing that P.B. was David Moody. Good guy, like Sally Simpson, all the posters seemed to like him. He looks eerily like my high school honors social studies teacher. The guy was also advisor for our successful chess team. |
|
Nov-08-24 | | areknames: I would also like to pay tribute to David Moody. I didn't know him personally but, like others have stated, his contributions to this site were greatly appreciated. And we share a birthday. |
|
Nov-08-24 | | stone free or die: For those who never "met" <Phony>, there's no better introduction to him than the profile he wrote for himself: User: Phony Benoni It's also a stellar example of his wry humor. |

Nov-08-24
 | | offramp: That's a good picture of David Moody. He reached 70, thank God. His posts are always funny and interesting.
It took me a long time to realise how much I miss him. "<...Let the boys

 | | saffuna: "Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.' From his profile. |
|
Nov-08-24
 | | perfidious: <saffuna>, that was a droll bit I always enjoyed. |
|
Nov-08-24 | | stone free or die: My favorite bit of Phony's droll...
<I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.> |

 | | MissScarlett: <sachistu: Regarding the questions about the passing of <Phony Benoni>, I can share the following: He suffered a broken hip Saturday, June 11th after being struck by a motorized wheelchair being operated by one of the residents at the retirement community where he lived. While the surgery went 'ok', he had problems coming out from the anesthesia. He was released from the hospital on the 24th to the nursing wing of his retirement community. Unfortunately, he passed away overnight of the same day as a result of a bacterial infection.> David Moody (kibitz #274) The circumstances of this accident are unknown. I wonder if there were any legal repurcussions. |
|
Nov-08-24 | | stone free or die: A tree was (presumably) planted in his memory on the campus of University of Detroit Mercy: https://www.givecampus.com/schools/... Question - Is the young man pictured at the start of the video with the (can't help but say) cheesy music a young Mr. Benoni? . |
