| Oct-16-11 | | nescio: Don't know what it's worth as basebaal is only a minor sport in Europe, but the following is big news here: http://www.ibaf.org/en/news/2011/10...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_B...
I think there are no Major League players in the world cup. On the radio news it was mentioned that the Dutch team was a mix of Minor League players and many from the Dutch league, which is vey minor of course. It must be said that the Dutch are already 20 times European champions (out of 31). |

| Oct-16-11 | | Travis Bickle: Phony, as a long time suffering Cubs fan I can sympathize with you. The Tigers had a great year and Verlander is an awesome pitcher! That said I know that doesn't offer consolation on the misery of defeat. P.S. Your Lions are playing great football! So hang in there. |
|
| Oct-16-11 | | playground player: <Phony Benoni> It just occurs to me that my last post to you resembles a letter to Ann Landers. Have you thought of going into that line of work? |

 | | Phony Benoni: <Travis> Just getting consolation from friends is consolation enough. But considering what Detroit had gone through with the Tigers/Lions up till the last few years, how can I complain? <nescio> Just glancing at the list of All-Star players, I spotted at least one player (Joe Thurston) who has been bouncing around the major leagues for about a decade as a reserve utility player. The others I checked seemed to be minor league prospects or former major leaguers, including one former Tiger. There has been no coverage in the major media outlets in the United States, due to the conflict with the major league playoffs plus the relative failure of the US team. But I'm sure major league teams had representatives there watching. However, I don't think tournament MVP Curt Smith will be making an impact any time soon. He's a first baseman in the St. Louis Cardinals organization. Of course, if the Cards don't resign Albert Pujols... |

| Oct-16-11 | | I play the Fred: <Phony>: I live in Texas - more of an Astros fan, I'm a National League guy - so my rooting interest should be clear. I wish the Rangers had gone through some other team to get to the WS, but of course that would have meant the Tigers were out one round sooner. Rooting is tougher when you like both teams. |
|
Oct-16-11
 | | Phony Benoni: <I play the Fred> I feel rooting is easier when you like both teams--you can't lose! |
|
| Oct-16-11 | | I play the Fred: That's true too. |

Oct-16-11
 | | WannaBe: Alright, alright, let's focus on football, Lions 3, 49ers 0, early 1st qtr... |
|
Oct-16-11
 | | Phony Benoni: <WannaBe> Back to rooting for SF yet? |
|
Oct-16-11
 | | WannaBe: No way Jose!
1. UCLA
2. Raiders
2. Kings
2. Lakers
2. Dodgers
UCLA will always be #1, they don't have lock-outs, will not threaten to move unless they get a new stadium, and I will always remember the years I spent there. (I usually wake up at night screaming, because I forgot to cram for an exam. Even to this day.) |
|
Oct-16-11
 | | WannaBe: There we go, that's the Detroit Lions we all know, losing at halftime. =) Had me worried there for a minute. |
|
Oct-16-11
 | | Phony Benoni: This is feeling like the day the Lions stumble; they're simply not clicking. |
|
Oct-16-11
 | | WannaBe: Field goal would tie it at 22. Let's see what the Lions do here. |
|
Oct-16-11
 | | WannaBe: Sorry, <Phony>... |
|
Oct-16-11
 | | Phony Benoni: I think they were simulating that one. |
|
Oct-16-11
 | | WannaBe: Looks like I've got to stop rooting for Detroit's teams, keep on jinxing them. =( |
|
| Oct-16-11 | | hangingenprise: ouch and double ouch |
|
| Oct-16-11 | | hangingenprise: <wannabe> waking up at night is usually because bruin land can't
find the end zone playing trojan
land. arrrrrugh |
|
Oct-16-11
 | | Phony Benoni: Hopefully this will be a wake-up call. All those second-half comebacks had to induce some over confidence; they needed to learn how far they still have to go. |
|
Oct-16-11
 | | WannaBe: We can't seem to find a good coach, our coach (I'm not a fan of him.) played QB for UCLA, and so one would think we would have good, above average, if not blue chip QBs that would know how to throw?? Noooooooooo.... |
|
| Oct-17-11 | | Jim Bartle: UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel is a real strange case.
In the 90s for whatever reason our cable system broadcast the three networks via the Denver stations, so I got a big dose of Neuheisel when he was coach at Colorado. My impression is that he's a talented, driven guy who got too big too young. He quit Colorado, leaving the kids he'd recruited in the lurch, to go to Washington for more money. Made a lot of noise there, then got fired (I think, don't remember details, maybe just resigned under pressure) for betting a whole lot on an NCAA basketball tournament pool. Then somehow he landed back at UCLA, one of the best college jobs in the country. I guess he hasn't won too many games there. I don't understand either why UCLA doesn't find a really good coach, or recruit a lot of the best players any more. It's a big time university, with a great reputation, it's in LA, they wear the greatest uniforms ever (at least they used to, the powder-blue ones, not sure now). For years they had Terry Donahue, who was excellent, and they had Tommy Prothro and Dick Vermeil before that. And they've had too many great players to list. |

 | | WannaBe: <JB> Here is what happened with Rick & U of W... It was a NCAA March Madness Pool, heck, who doesn't do brackets for that? I got friends who would do multiple sheets!! Believe it was something like $50 to join this pool, Rick asked his boss the athletic director at U of W, she said sure, no problem, go ahead. Then the NCAA got a wind of it, and said tsk, tsk to Rick. (Maybe being a football coach gives you inside information on Duke's basketball program... or UConn, maybe UCLA...) After Rick was 'forced out/fired', he did file a wrongful termination law suit. Rick did win that case, and got monetary compensation. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/... |
|
| Oct-17-11 | | Jim Bartle: Fifty dollars?? I thought it was more like $5,000. |
|
Oct-17-11
 | | WannaBe: <JB> You very well could be right, no web-site that I visited said anything about entry fee of the pool, a couple of sites said the pool was 'high-stake'. No idea how I got/remember that 50... (Getting old here.) |
|
| Oct-17-11 | | Shams: I shouldn't pipe up because I don't remember any of the details even though I was living here in Seattle at the time. Neuheisel was already on thin ice with the school for other violations, the betting pool was just the final straw. But I think <Jim> is right and there was some real money at play. I don't think millionaires usually gamble for peanuts. Is this it for him at UCLA? Tough to fail at your own alma mater. |
