 | | WannaBe: Every team in the AFC West, have given up more points than scored. How about that?! If the season ended today, Chicago and Detroit would be the 2 NFC Wild Card Teams, and AFC would have Pittsburgh and Cincinnati. Bungles? The Bungles?! Bring back Icky Woods and what's-his-name that was the QB when that team was good. |
| Nov-21-11 | | Jim Bartle: Somehow I don't see Green Bay going 16-0, and Thursday is as good a day as any for them to lose one. I don't recommend falling behind by 17, though. The Bengals once did have a pretty great QB, Kenny Anderson. |
Nov-21-11
 | | WannaBe: <Jim Bartle> The kid I'm thinking about is Boomer Esiason... Had to go and look it up. That Bengals team lost to the 49ers in SB XXIII Anybody giving KC any inkling of a chance tonight against NE?? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller? |
Nov-21-11
 | | Phony Benoni: Hey, on Any Given Sunday any team can beat any other team. However, I'm not sure if this applies to Mondays. |
Nov-21-11
 | | Phony Benoni: Justin Verlander wins the AL MVP, which should put to rest the controversy about starting pitchers being eligible for the award ... at least until next year. It will always be an exception when one wins, taking a perfect storm of a phenomenal season and no other standout candidate. By the way, <JB>, you're right about Kenny Anderson. He led the Bengals to the Super Bowl against the 49ers, but in 1982, not 1989. That wabbit is too young to remember the Ancient Past. |
| Nov-21-11 | | Jim Bartle: I was kidding about Anderson, but he really was an excellent quarterback. Used to throw to speedster Isaac Curtis from Cal. Went to a really, really tiny college called Augustana. |
Nov-21-11
 | | WannaBe: <Jim Bartle> That must be the Augustana in Ill. if he had went to the one in S. Dak., I'd known about it. Congrats to J. Verlander. Glad no one on the Yankees or BoSox got it. =) |
| Nov-21-11 | | dakgootje: Hello, Dak. here! I know nothing - what's the question? |
| Nov-21-11 | | Shams: <Anybody giving KC any inkling of a chance tonight against NE??> As much as I follow football, I couldn't name Matt Cassel's backup. I'm going to say "no chance". |
Nov-21-11
 | | Phony Benoni: <dakgootje> When you know nothing, everything is a question. |
| Nov-22-11 | | Jim Bartle: A pitcher won the MVP? WHAT A JOKE!! A pitcher only plays one game in five!!! While sitting around and joking on the bench the other four while his teammates bust their guts on the field! He only has one-fifth the impact of an everyday player. And he can't even hit the ball. You're welcome, PB. |
Nov-22-11
 | | Phony Benoni: Apparently one writer left Verlander off the ballot completely. The media idiots around here want to lynch the person responsible, or (even worse) take away their voting privileges. But it's a perfectly valid point of view, and I believe it will always be an exception when a pitcher wins the MVP. |
| Nov-22-11 | | Jim Bartle: It will continue to be an exception, because a pitcher is rarely good enough. But on those rare occasions you've got a pitcher who's going to go out every fifth day and is virtually certain to give two runs or fewer, to stop any losing streak, to get a nearly sure win, that's often an MVP. The funny thing is that two of the great pitcher's years, 1978 and 1986, Guidry's and Clemens' dominant years came the same years as Rice's and Mattingly's big years. |
Nov-22-11
 | | Phony Benoni: Ryan Braun gets NL MVP over Jeff Kemp. Clearly the "winning team" factor, as their stats weren't that much different. You'd think that Kemp would be more valuable to the Dodgers than Braun was to the Brewers, but it doesn't work that way. |
Nov-22-11
 | | WannaBe: Braun should share some of the bonus from the Brewers or MVP prize with Fielder... =) |
Nov-22-11
 | | WannaBe: ESPN's article on the similiarities of '11 to '62.

| Nov-22-11 | | I play the Fred: <Jim Bartle>, that comment came off as though you were joking. In case you weren't (or for the benefit of people who really feel that way), I'd like to present this: Justin Verlander faced 969 batters this season, which is 200+ more at-bats than any of the other AL MVP candidates had <despite> playing every fifth day. |
Nov-22-11
 | | WannaBe: Wooo... Orton just got released by Denver.
QB anybody? Anyone? Anybody need a QB? |
Nov-22-11
 | | Phony Benoni: <WannaBe, TMZ for the NFL> Actually, Chicago might be in the market with Cutler's injury. Though I don't know how <Our Friend Travis> would react to the idea of having Orton back. Maybe I should ask. In his forum. Keep the damage away from here. <I play the Fred> Verlander was making points like that near the end of the season, almost campaigning. For instance, he pointed out that the starting pitcher is more likely to have a decisive impact in the games he pitches than a position player in any particular game. Another point: this year Verlander started 34 games, and pitched a total of 251 of a possible 306 innings. In his 34 starts, the Tigers bullpen only had to throw 55 innings of relief. That sort of rest has impact over the next couple of days as well. Perhaps valid points, but a little too close to rationalizing for my taste. |
Nov-22-11
 | | WannaBe: <Phony Benoni> Not sure if that is a compliment, or not, but I'll take it! Also, for the pool this week, I took Detroit, following the '62 trend! |
Nov-22-11
 | | Phony Benoni: <WannaBe> For the record, I think Detroit has a good chance against Green Bay if they don't get sloppy and fall behind early. This ain't Carolina. |
| Nov-23-11 | | King Death: < Phony Benoni: <WannaBe, TMZ for the NFL> Actually, Chicago might be in the market with Cutler's injury. Though I don't know how <Our Friend Travis> would react to the idea of having Orton back. Maybe I should ask. In his forum. Keep the damage away from here.> Maybe the Bears will put in a waiver claim, but do they really have a shot? They'd be 30th and there might be teams interested if they can stand the hit against the cap for what's left of Orton's contract. The Packers have one weakness and Detroit's a team that can make them pay. First team to 100 wins. |
| Nov-23-11 | | Travis Bickle: <Phony Benoni: <WannaBe, TMZ for the NFL> Actually, Chicago might be in the market with Cutler's injury. Though I don't know how <Our Friend Travis> would react to the idea of having Orton back. Maybe I should ask. In his forum. Keep the damage away from here.> Damage? LOL!! No damage to you Phony, you're my pal! ; P The Score, Chicago's #1 sports radio show covered that story today. As it turns out Kyle Orton with the Tim Tebow Circus in Denver asked his agent to contact The Chicago Bears, as he apparently wants to come back to Chicago. My hatred for him has resided. lol Hell he probably could hold the fort down when Cutler returns. Chicago back-up QB Caleb Haney doesn't exactly cause a sensation, & the Bears have a pretty mild schedule from here on out. They play the Raiders, Chiefs, Broncos, Kansas City, Seattle, *The Cheeseheads, & the lowly Vikings. |
| Nov-23-11 | | Travis Bickle: Dr Benoni, I hope your Lions knock the snot out of the packers Thursday!! |
| Nov-23-11 | | Jim Bartle: I was definitely joking about starting pitchers not being worthy of the MVP because they play only once in five days. Their influence that one day equals that of (most) other players playing every game. As Bill James once wrote, "I've never seen the name of the starting shortstop listed in the morning paper." |
