Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Black's bishop makes me think of Godzilla emerging from the depths of the ocean to wreak havoc. However, in the end it's his Two Little Friends who steal the show. Well, maybe not so litt.

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: Don't know if the Red Wings were the first, but they surely took full advantage of the opportunity. A lot of the credit goes to Scotty Bowman for realizing the merits of the Russian style and blending it well with the North American.

Phony Benoni: <Travis Bickle> Red Wings, 6, Blackhawks 1. Good ol' fashioned country whuppin'. I must admit I'm feeling a little more optimistic.
May-24-09  Travis Bickle: <Phony Benoni> Congratulations its over.
May-24-09  Jim Bartle: Scoring 12 seconds after the home team has scored its first goal sounds like a good way to quiet the crowd.

Phony Benoni: Most everyone around here agrees with Da Bickle Bear that it's over. Fine, as long as the team doesn't believe it. If they slip up in game 5, Chicago goes back home with momentum, and if it goes to game 7 ... well, who knows?

How am I going to survive the finals?

May-25-09  Jim Bartle: Wow, you really are a pessimist by nature, PB.

Phony Benoni: Oh, I doubt I'll ever be a really good pessimist. In fact, you have to be a bit of an optimist to think you can get away with playing the Benoni.

Open Defence: a good pessimist thinks his grim outlook is optimistic :)
May-25-09  Jim Bartle: I heard PB didn't celebrate Gibson's homer in the 84 Series until he touched home. He was worried Gibson would miss second base.

Phony Benoni: Of course I didn't celebrate Gibson's home run in '84. It was only the eighth inning!

  Open Defence: lmao!
May-25-09  Jim Bartle: "It was only the eighth inning!"

With your team up 3-1 and four runs ahead!

May-25-09  Travis Bickle: <Phony Benoni: Oh, I doubt I'll ever be a really good pessimist. In fact, you have to be a bit of an optimist to think you can get away with playing the Benoni.> Fischer did pretty well with the benoni PB. ; P
May-25-09  Jim Bartle: Your attitude, PB, reminds me of Greg Norman, who lost major tournaments via chip-ins and all sorts of other weird stuff.

When he finally had a two-shot lead at the 93 British Open, he refused even to crack a smile with his closest follower in the last fairway and needing to hole out from 180 yards. When that player blew that easy shot (!), only then did Norman go crazy.

May-25-09  Travis Bickle: <Jim Bartle: "It was only the eighth inning!"

With your team up 3-1 and four runs ahead!> Well The Cubs in the 2003 NLCS were up 3-0 in the 8th inning with 5 outs to go to advance to the World Series, and a foul ball was popped up... We all know the end of that sad story. Needless to say Florida scored 8 runs in the top of the 8th and went on to win game 7 and go on to the World Series. Yeah Im with PB on being a pessimist, to me a glass of champagne is always half empty never half full.

Open Defence: a true pessimist would say that a glass of champagne half full or half empty is still expensive...
May-25-09  Jim Bartle: Travis, you are a Cubs fan. By definition you are an optimist. Any self-respecting pessimist would have abandoned them half a century ago.
May-25-09  Travis Bickle: <Jim Bartle> Well Jim being a Cubs fan is a complicated thing, I mean last year when L.A. killed The Cubs in the playoffs I cut my Cubs hat in half in agonizing frustration saying that was the end for me, but this year when the season started I was pulling for The Cubs again, albeit half heartedly.

May-25-09  Jim Bartle: Ambrose Bierce in the Devil's Dictionary:

OPTIMIST, n. A proponent of the doctrine that black is white.

A pessimist applied to God for relief.

"Ah, you wish me to restore your hope and cheerfulness," said God. "No," replied the petitioner, "I wish you to create something that would justify them."

"The world is all created," said God, "but you have overlooked something—the mortality of the optimist."

May-26-09  YouRang: <Travis Bickle><last year when L.A. killed The Cubs in the playoffs I cut my Cubs hat in half in agonizing frustration saying that was the end for me, but this year when the season started I was pulling for The Cubs again, albeit half heartedly.>

Did you mean "half hattedly"?

May-26-09  Jim Bartle: A know-little takes a guess at the all-time NHL team:

1st team:
Forwards: Gretzky, Howe, Lemieux
Defensemen: Orr, Bourque
Goalie: Dryden

2nd team:
Forwards: Maurice Richard, Beliveau, Bobby Hull (or Mikita) Defensemen: Lidstrom, Harvey
Goalie: Sawchuk

May-26-09  valiant: Mark Messier was very good.

IIHF Centennial all-star-team (voted 2008):

Tretiak, Fetisov, Salming, Kharlamov, Makarov, Gretzky http://www.iihf.com/channels/iihf-w...

May-26-09  Jim Bartle: Looks like I missed out with Salming and Fetisov. Tretiak, Kharlamov and Makarov never played in the NHL, apparently. I do wonder if those defensemen were really better than Bobby Orr.
