Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Apr-23-15  Jim Bartle: Carl Yastrzemski, he wore number eight. in the field and at bat, my God he was great.

For 23 years he carried the load.
A player like that deserves his own ode.

But here is the rub, Yastrzemski won’t rhyme
with any word I’ve been able to find.

I’ve lain awake nights, I’ve done the research,
but found not one rhyme. I am left in the lurch.

There just is no rhyme to go with Yastrzemski,
and take that from one who has made the attemptski.

Phony Benoni: <JB> I used to work with a woman named "Zgzremski". Can't remember how to spell her name after all these years, but it did rhyme.

Tigers closer Joe Nathan tore a ligament in his elbow during a rehab assignment yesterday, and will need his second Tommy John surgery. At age 40, and already showing declining effectiveness, his career is probably over.

So his only appearance this year was on Opening Day, when he faced one hitter and struck him out to earn a save. And you know, if you're a closer and you know you're on the way down, and the Good Lord offers you a chance to finish with a strikeout and save at the cost of blowing out your arm, you just might take it.

WannaBe: Apparently, I witness a bit of Beesball Heestory last night, for the first time reigning Cy Young pitched against reigning World Series MVP. (As pitcher v pitcher)

Apr-23-15  Jim Bartle: Larry Sherry! A bolt from the past. Two Sherrys, Wally Moon, Charlie Neal, World Series!
Apr-23-15  Jim Bartle: <rule mavens> I say interference. Anyone else?

WannaBe: Of course, I'd say interference, but while in the stands, everyone rose up when the ball got through for a hit.

And everyone (I imagine, I know I did) was looking at home plate for an anticipated collision/close play.

NO ONE was looking at third base, much less Roberto Kelly and the base runner. But someone on the Dodgers did (Their dugout was first base side) and Mattingly immediately came out and jogged (sprinted??) to third and began his 'discussion' with the ump.

Then he went back to the dugout, and came out 10 seconds later to talk to the home plate umpire, (crowd was boo'ng...) after that, he went back to the dugout.

Then HE CAME OUT again to the mound (More boo'ng, of course) and he had everyone on the mound in a huddle, he didn't break up the meeting until home plate ump literally walked into the huddle.

Then Dodgers did the 2 outfielder 5 infielder play, everyone was standing right on the edge of the grass, very symmetrical. See if I can dig up a picture of that later...

Very glad I was there for the game, pretty much everything I expected from two exceptional starting pitcher.

Current schedule have MadBum v Kershaw II at Dodgers Stadium Monday 27th... Oughtta be another epic battle. Worthy of Anand/Carlsen II. =))

WannaBe: Here is one, showing the right side of the infield, the left was virtually identical, all the defender standing right at the grass, lined up as if doing a parade viewing.

WannaBe: I remember this very, very, very well:

After that game, I started calling him Chan Ho-That-Going-Out-Of-The Park

Apr-23-15  Jim Bartle: The team in the field has seven players to place wherever it wants. The batter sees where they are and where they aren't. What's the problem?
Apr-23-15  Jim Bartle: Nice catch by Puig. But what's great is the calls are by the greatest announcer of the last 50 years (Scully) and the grestest of the past 20 years (Miller).

WannaBe: <JB> It was great (my opinion) last night, every time the name 'Puig' is heard on the PA, you were guaranteed thunderous BOOOOOOO. =)

Very nice, wouldn't be the same Dodgers-Giants game/rivalry without some player(s) to hate.

Now, who would should the Dodgers fan boo next week, when Giants go to LA?

Apr-23-15  Jim Bartle: IMO the real Giants-Dodgers rivalry died when the O'Malleys sold and the Dodgers started signing free agents instead of being mostly homegrown. Just not the same.

Besides, how are you going to hate a team managed by Don Mattingly?

WannaBe: Oh, yeah, saw two fans with Selfie Stick last night, too.

First time I'd seen someone actually carrying and using one of them new gadget. (Hey, I don't get out much...)

Apr-23-15  Jim Bartle: Is Dodger Stadium still nice? I went to two games at the end of the 1978 season (sat in season tickets right behind the dugout in one ) and thought it was the greatest place I'd ever seen.

  WannaBe: <Jim Bartle> Yes, of course!! =))

(Hey, what else would you expect me to say about Dodgers Stadium?)

No corporate name, you get a nice smog view of LA, getting in and out still take an hour.

Dodgers Dog better be grilled, not boiled or steamed. D@mn It!

But I tell ya, every time I go to AT&T Park, it's a decision between the Kielbasa or the Sheboygan.

Sheboygan: http://s3-media4.fl.yelpassets.com/...

Kielbasa: https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.co...

Both are <HUGE> & I'm not kidding you. 8.75$ for Sheboygan, 9.00$ for the Kielbasa. (Great deal/value in my opinion)

But if you buy a 16oz aluminum bottled Bud (Light) it's 10.50$ a small cup (12 oz??) of craft beer, 11.00$

Apr-23-15  Jim Bartle: And you can watch a baseball game while eating and drinking.

Phony Benoni: Here's a typical late-season Cubs game, as their bullpen blows another ninth-inning lead:

http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/...

But this game featured a First in Major League Baseball history. OK, maybe not featured, but it did happen for the first time. Your clue is <Lawrence Peter Berra>.

Apr-24-15  Jim Bartle: 15 walks in nine innings?
Apr-24-15  Jim Bartle: I can't figure it out. Something to do with "It ain't over..."

Phony Benoni: In the Phillies' 5th inning, <Yorkis Perez> made his major league debut, striking out the only batter he faced. He thus became the first players in MLB history whose first name began with the letter "Y".

In my mind, Yogi Berra doesn't count despite what this site says:

http://www.sportsfy.com/baseball-pl...

It was all that talk about Yastrzemski and Yasiel Puig that set me wondering.

WannaBe: There is a pitcher now, Yimi Garcia on the Dodgers. Speaking of first names starting with 'Y'
