Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Jul-30-09  technical draw: Every time the Braves get a man on base the fans start with that ridiculous Indian "War" chant and the chop-chop with the arms. It's just irritating as hell.
Jul-30-09  Jim Bartle: Plus it's not even original. It was stolen from Florida State.

But you've got to give their pitchers Maddux and Glavine credit for that great "Chicks dig the long ball" ad.

kutztown46: <technical draw: Every time the Braves get a man on base the fans start with that ridiculous Indian "War" chant and the chop-chop with the arms. It's just irritating as hell.>

Exactly.

Jul-30-09  A.G. Argent: Jim, and furthermore: " Why do Yankee fans still love the Yanks? The team has embarrassed it's supporters by leading the league in steroid scandals - thanks, Jason Giambi, Andy Pettitte, Roger Clemens and Alex Rodriguez. It's also made them cringe by strong-arming New York City into giving the team public funds to subsidize it's new $1.5 billion stadium while simultaneously flexing it's herculean financial muscles to grab expensive free agents like a spoiled heir stockpiling rare sports cars. Last off-season, the Yanks allocated $423 million for three players while getting more than $1 billion in tax-exempt bonds from the city, costing taxpayers millions in revenues. It can be thrilling to see the Bombers win free-agent battles year after year - and why shouldn't they, if they can make more money than other teams by selling lots of tickets at high prices and draw even more fans to YES, their multibillion-dollar TV network?" ....etc. - New York Times Book Review, July 26, 2009 - Reviewing: "A-Rod", "The Yankee Years" and "American Icon".
Jul-30-09  A.G. Argent: At least Florida State asked for permission from the Seminole tribe to do their chant/chop. Atlanta was aked by several tribal leaders as well as AIM to stop it but they just thumb their nose in defiance and, yes, hubris. Go Phillies.
Jul-30-09  Jim Bartle: Yes, I read that book review in the NY Times. Aside from the abuse by the Yankees, I was really surprised to read the comments by Joe Torre and others that Alex Rodriguez doesn't produce often because he's more concerned about how he looks (not looking bad) than with actually winning. You know, image is everything.

I watched Yankees vs. Tampa last night, and it seemed true. Rodriguez looked so good up there, but kept striking out on bad pitches with men on base.

Jul-30-09  dzechiel: <Quite sure you didn't mind the outcome, Jim. (Sorry, Dave Z.)>

When Broxton failed to close it out in the 9th, I stopped watching. Glad I didn't hang around to the 15th.

Jul-30-09  dzechiel: <By the way, anybody catch this play?

http://mlb.mlb.com/media/video.jsp?...

Now that's hitting the ball on the button.>

That happened to one of the Dodger shortstops last year (the ball took a funny bounce and became lodged in his shirt). Almost makes you wish for zippers.

Jul-30-09  dzechiel: <Jim Bartle: Only team worth hating is the Yankees>

Amen. Under strange and bizarre circumstances I could maybe become a Giants fan (the Dodgers club would have to move to the east coast and change their name), but never a Yankee fan.

About five years ago I attended a Yankee - Mariner game at the old Yankee Stadium. What an experience! You should do it once, but not twice.

Jul-30-09  Jim Bartle: The old Yankee Stadium was great, and I mean the real stadium before the renovations in the 70s. Yes, there were seats with obstructed views (I sat in one the only time I went), but that was a small price to pay.

I'd say the O'Malley Dodgers were worth hating (in a fun way), but now they're just another team. When O'Malley owned the team, it always had a unique look, and was made up primarily of players from the farm system. Lots to hate (Steve Garvey!), but lots to admire (Koufax, Parker, Perranoski, Dusty Baker, Cey, Lopes, Roseboro, etc.)

Jul-31-09  dzechiel: <...Lots to hate (Steve Garvey!)>

The father of our country!? Shame on you!

<, but lots to admire (Koufax, Parker, Perranoski, Dusty Baker, Cey, Lopes, Roseboro, etc.)>

I would have to disagree about one of the above. Dusty Baker was with the Dodgers at the same time Steve Howe was pitching for the Blue Crew, and there are many people who suspect Dusty of being and enabler for Steve and contributing to his league leading seven suspensions.

WannaBe: Err, make that 4:20 mark... Sorry, I was never very good with counting...
Jul-31-09  playground player: <Phony Benoni> Hating the Dodgers and the Yankees just came naturally, if you grew up in a Giants household in the early 1950s. I sure looked foreward to seeing Frank Lary pitch against the Yankees.

<All Baseball Fans> The best baseball book I ever read was John Roseboro's "Glory Days With the Dodgers." I'm sure it's long out of print, but if you can possibly find it, get it! Roseboro is amazingly candid, and his thoughts well worth examining. A big, big cut above most of the rest.

Jul-31-09  Jim Bartle: Never heard of that book, but I'd like to read it.

Another really fun and informative book is "You're Missing a Great Game" by Whitey Herzog.

Jul-31-09  A.G. Argent: P-Player < Glory Days with the Dodgers> Used copies are available at Amazon for seven bucks or so.

Phony Benoni: <playground player> I was going to ask about Roseboro's take on the spat with Juan Marichal, but judging from the Wikipedia account that turned out OK: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juan_M...
Jul-31-09  dzechiel: <Phony Benoni: <playground player> I was going to ask about Roseboro's take on the spat with Juan Marichal...>

"Spat" is an interesting way of putting it. I recall reading about that in the L.A. Times the next morning, complete with picture of Roseboro being led off of the field bleeding from the scalp. That could only serve to increase dislike for the already hated Giants.

Jul-31-09  whiteshark: <Phony Benoni> Does the following quote belong to you and did you write that book?

"Eventually, I fulfilled a lot of dreams, and saw many more fall by the wayside. But one Holy Grail still shone brightly for me, an unattainable goal, I wanted to pull of a smothered mate in a tournament game."

Phony Benoni: <whiteshark> Yes, that's me. I never did write the book. By the way, the editor of the web page screwed up the title: it was supposed to be <50 Secret Ways To Pull Off Scholar's Mate>.

Even for those of you who are not interested, here's the full article. It tells the complete story of an incident in my profile:

Jul-31-09  whiteshark: <Phony Benoni> This quote finally made it as intro in a serious chess book. You'd almost think it turned out badly for you. :D
Jul-31-09  playground player: <All> Roseboro's contretemps with Marichal is covered in the first chapter of his book. He thought he ought to put it there because it was the thing he was most remembered for.

<Phony Benoni> Great quote! Quite poetic, I must tip my hat to you.

Phony Benoni: <whiteshark> Oh, my goodness, which book? You mean I'm famous?

I don't know if my heart can stand this.

Jul-31-09  whiteshark: Christian Hesse

"Recently he authored <Expeditionen in die Schachwelt <(Expeditions into the world of chess, ISBN 3-935748-14-0)>>, a collection of about 100 essays that the Viennese newspaper Der Standard called “one of the most intellectually scintillating and recommendable books on chess ever written.”"

(his entertaining and inspiring style of writing is all alike as the chessbase.com articles)

Your quote is on page 217 (of my German edition) as intro to the chapter....

<smothered mate>
