Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Black's bishop makes me think of Godzilla emerging from the depths of the ocean to wreak havoc. However, in the end it's his Two Little Friends who steal the show. Well, maybe not so litt.

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Aug-04-09  A.G. Argent: Jim, did Uecker really say that? Quite funny.
Aug-04-09  Jim Bartle: Well, I paraphrased a little: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=weeN...

Got my TV hooked up. Let's see what's on. Hey, Cardinals vs. Mets! 10th inning! Bases loaded! Pujols up. See ya!

Aug-04-09  Jim Bartle: "Against Drysdale, he was a Buhl-like 3 for 43 (.070)."

Giants fans prefer the term "Herbelesque."

Phony Benoni: I just checked out what Pujols did with that bases loaded situation.

Is the NL MVP race over yet?

Aug-04-09  Jim Bartle: Nice baptism for my TV.
Aug-05-09  Jim Bartle: Who'll be the first to give him an intentional pass?

Pujols is 7 for 9 this year with the bases loaded. 24 RBIs.

Aug-05-09  A.G. Argent: The Hombre tied Ernie Banks for NL G-Slams in a season and is one behind Travis Hafner and Donny Baseball Mattingly over all. And it's early August.
Aug-05-09  Jim Bartle: Travis...Hafner??

Phony Benoni: JB, I assume you meant walking Pujols intentionally with the bases loaded? That's something Tony LaRussa might do.

It'd really be respect to walk Pujols with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth with a one-run lead.

Maybe the correct strategy with the bases loaded and Pujols up is to throw a wild pitch. Then the bases won't be loaded any more.

By the way, speaking of Travis, isn't it interesting how the Bickle Boy's mood has improved with the Cubs fighting for first place?

Aug-05-09  Jim Bartle: I believe Barry Bonds was walked once with the bases loaded. Giants were losing by four in the ninth, so the opponent gave up one run to make sure Bonds didn't knock in four.

Scan down to near the bottom. The Dalrymple story is sort of weird, but the others seem legitimate.

Phony Benoni: You know, that video of Ruth's 60 strikes me as kind of odd. It almost looks like two different games, before and after the home run.

Also, why have all that bunting for a meaningless late season game? And, didn't it seem like there was a lot more than 8,000 people in Yankee Stadium that day?

Aug-06-09  Jim Bartle: Watching Sox-Yankees at the new Stadium. Home runs to right are reaaalllly cheap. Already line drives by Damon, Pedroia and a new Sox (Sock) I don't know have gone over the fence. Should have been doubles, not a single one looked like what I think of as a home run.

Phony Benoni: The Tigers have had trouble with backup catchers this years, both candidates outdoing Mario Mendoza. So they've brought up a kid named Alan Avila, who just happens to be the son of the Assistant General Manager.

He started today, got two hits and drove in a run.

So now everyone is calling up Matt Millen and asking why he didn't draft his sons for the Lions.

(P.S. Don't know of any relation to Bobby Avila)

Aug-06-09  Jim Bartle: Great trivia question on TV tonight: A pitcher has thrown in 48 different stadiums. Who?

Seeing John Smoltz in a Sox uniform just didn't look right. I hope I don't live to see Jeter in an Atlanta uniform.

Phony Benoni: My first thought would be Gaylord Perry; long career with substantial time in both leagues, during expansion. Nolan Ryan is another possibility.
Aug-06-09  Jim Bartle: Not a great pitcher, actually, but a good one. Still active.
Aug-06-09  Dredge Rivers: <Jim Bartle> David Wells? He's THROWN UP in at least 48 different stadiums, I know! :)

Phony Benoni: Hmm. You're watching the Red Sox and Yankees, so it's probably somebody on one of those teams. But I don't see who. Wakefield, Pettite, and Smoltz have seen service almost exclusively in one league.

Is it a batting practice pitcher or something?

Phony Benoni: Or is it one of the Japanese guys, and they're counting stadiums in Japan or the minor leagues?
Aug-06-09  Dredge Rivers: I still say Wells. (Is he still active?)
Aug-06-09

Phony Benoni: He hasn't pitched since 2007, so most people would say he's not active. I don't know if he agrees.
Aug-06-09  Dredge Rivers: <Phony Benoni> My bad. But hey, I ain't no Bob James! :)
Aug-06-09  Dredge Rivers: ARRRGH! The suspense is killing me! :)
