Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: Looking at the "Similarity Scores" over at Baseball Reference, I was not surprised to see that Otis Nixon and John Kruk were totally dissimilar.

So I guess Otis was telling the truth when he said, "I am not a Kruk."

(You saw that coming before the second paragraph, didn't you?)

Jun-10-16  Jim Bartle: Very nice.

Reminds me vaguely of my oft-repeated story of NBA benchwarmer Scott Hastings.

Hastings: I am often mentioned in the same sentence as Larry Bird.

Interviewer: What?

Hastings: Yes, they say, 'That Scott Hastings, he's no Larry Bird.'

In fact the similarity scores often give some strange results, players who don't appear to be at all similar on the surface.

Jun-11-16  Party Animal: Hello Mr Benoni, long time no see.

The bad news: The Cubs lost to the Braves yesterday, a team that has all of 6 wins at home! : O

The good news: Jake Arrieta is pitching today in Atlanta! ; P

Jun-12-16  Jim Bartle: What is the most scoreless innings ever thrown by a pitcher in a major league game?

I nominate Gaylord Perry in this game, 16 innings: http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/...

And Juan Marichal, also 16 innings in this famous game: http://www.baseball-reference.com/b....

Warren Spahn fell short with 15 scoreless innings in that game.

I seriously doubt the record is in danger today. Nobody would be allowed to pitch that long.

Phony Benoni: Well, there's always Joe Oescheger with 21+ scoreless innings:

http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/...

But, if you're going to get technical and insists on shut-outs, it's 18, done four times. Here are the two box scores available:

Walter Johnson: http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/...

Carl Hubbell http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/...

Jun-12-16  Jim Bartle: No, I didn't mean complete game shutouts. Perry's wasn't. "Closer" Frank Linzy came in for five innings for the win.

Phony Benoni: Not a very encouraging sign. It's as thought they're trying to draw fans' attention away from the field.

And does anybody actually pay attention to cheerleaders? Cheerwise, I mean. NFL fans watch cheerleaders for the same reason they watch NASCAR, There's always the chance of a wardrobe malfunction.

Jun-13-16  Jim Bartle: I think cheerleaders are more important for team promotional events than during the games.

Phony Benoni: The public viewing for Gordie Howe is being held today from 9 AM to 9 PM (when else?) at Joe Louis Arena. Whenever the local newscaster mention this, they invariably add "...where he played for so many years."

Somebody has very short memories. Howe left the Red Wings after 1971. Joe Louis Arena didn't open until the end of 1978. And, as far as I know, the WHA never had a team in Detroit, so I doubt he ever played there.

Jun-14-16  Jim Bartle: Where did the Wings play, Cobo Arena?
Jun-14-16  Jim Bartle: Don Newcombe turns 90.

Phony Benoni: <Party Animal> Awfully painful to type when you're gnawing your fingernails to the bones. Last night, Tigers blew a 7-0 and lost 10-9 in twelve innings. Tonight, they had a 10-2 lead, wound up wining 10-8.

At least they're consistent.

Jun-15-16  Party Animal: Hey Phony, ya gotta celebrate that 10-8 WIN! Like Harry Caray would say, "Hey ma we won"! ; P

Phony Benoni: Hey, Party Animal, Tigers' fans don't celebrate just plain winning any more. That's expected. We're only happy with style points. You know, the type you get by not blowing 7-8 run leads.

Believe me, the way the Cubs are playing, I expect any day now to see Harry Caray in a tuxedo sipping a martini at an exhibition of modern art. Oh, sorry, that's pizza. It's still Harry Caray.

  WannaBe: From ESPN:

<Aces wild in MLB on Wednesday

Stephen Strasburg, Chris Sale, Clayton Kershaw and Johnny Cueto are all starting today. The last time four starters at least eight games over .500 started on the same day prior to July 1 was in 1951 (Sal Maglie, Preacher Roe, Bob Feller and Ed Lopat -- via Elias).>

Who's Ed Lopat?!

Jun-15-16  Jim Bartle: How do they figure out something so obscure? And why?

I'm interested if they're matched up, like Marichal vs. Drysdale, which I saw as a kid.
