Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

   Jun-10-22 L T Magee vs E L Holland, 1948 (replies)

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Black's bishop makes me think of Godzilla emerging from the depths of the ocean to wreak havoc. However, in the end it's his Two Little Friends who steal the show. Well, maybe not so litt.

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Sep-13-09  Travis Bickle: I bet Mr. Benoni knows this. George halas played baseball with Babe Ruth on The Yankees! Papa Bear Halas who along with Paul Brown invented Pro Football, a game for men! What a visionary!
Sep-13-09  Travis Bickle: A film of Bears fans tailgating.
Warning: Some brief R rated language.

Phony Benoni: <Travis> I didn't know that, simply because Halas only played in 1919 and Ruth didn't come to the Yankeees until 1920.

His lifetime record: 22 at bats, 2 hits for an .091 average. I'm surprised he didn't found the Lions instead of the Bears.

Sep-13-09  technical draw: First game first "miracle ending":

Sep-13-09  Travis Bickle: <Phony Benoni>> All these years I had heard Halas played with Ruth, even from TV commentators. Are you sure that is true? Maybe he played with Ruth in spring training.
Sep-13-09  Travis Bickle: <technical draw> Great sideline reporting TD!!

Phony Benoni: <Travis Bickle> The story I always heard was that Ruth replaced Halas in right field, but that's not accurate either: Halas played only 12 games, the last in early July. Perhaps they may have played together in spring training, but by 1920 Halas was committed to football.
Sep-13-09  Jim Bartle: "Attn: Jim Bartle the real sport starts today!!!"

Oh yeah? Let's see Jay Cutler or Brian Urlacher try this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z11e...

Phony Benoni: <JB> I surprised Federer had the guts to swing his racket in that area. If I tried that...

Since <Travis Bickle> appears to be in mourning, I'll recommend a musical piece which might appeal to the habitués of this forum.

Sep-14-09  Jim Bartle: At least da Bears lost on a long pass with a couple of minutes left. Not like Cincinnati, who lost on an 87 yard reprise of the Immaculate Reception with 20 seconds left.
Sep-14-09  A.G. Argent: That's pretty funny, Czar, the PDQ Bach. I needed a bit of a chuckle myself after the &%$#*@%^#! Braves SWEPT the Cards. In St. Louis!!! I got a bad feeling about a bit of a stumble heading into the last 2 weeks; Marlins in tonight and then the Cubs. The NL Central ain't hardly wrapped up yet, I fear. But at least the Niners took it to that *&*%$% Warner and his flash-in-the-pan bunch. Had no idea about the Four-Nine's defense. Just didn't know what to expect. But we'll see in two weeks in Minnesota what they're made of.
Sep-14-09  Jim Bartle: Jay Leno: "I watched Brett Favre today. Very impressive. Went the whole game without retiring."

Dan Fouts after Denver's TD with ten seconds left: ""The thing is, now Cincinnati's got to get the Stanford band on the field.''

Phony Benoni: <A.G. Argent> I feel your pain. The Tigers lost five of six last week--incluidng getting swept by Kansas City--and dropped one whole game off their seven game lead.

I think the Lions could win the AL Central this year.

WannaBe: Del Potro looks like a little boy out there, Roger should win this in 3 sets...
Sep-14-09  suenteus po 147: Federer's only real competition was Nadal, but since he bowed out in the semi-finals it's a history-making 6th straight US Open for Federer.

WannaBe: Just like I said, previously; Del Potro looks like a formidable opponent, this will surely go 5 sets!!

:-))

Sep-14-09  Jim Bartle: Roger looks really pissed he lost the second set. He thinks he got cheated out of a couple points. Haven't seen him that way before.

  Open Defence: go Del Potro!!
Sep-14-09  suenteus po 147: <Jim Bartle> When he was younger, Federer had a notorious temper. So far, it has only been Nadal that has drawn this out of him since he's been on top, but maybe Del Potro has the firepower to shake Federer's game. It sure was shocking how he dismissed Nadal in straight sets.
Sep-14-09  Jim Bartle: Let's not forget that for the past five years Federer or Nadal has won every single major championship, with the exception of one Australian for Djokovic. That's impressive for both of them. (And Nadal is the only player who's ever beaten Federer in a major final, five times.)

Phony Benoni: Oh, no! Federer's not going to go Serena on us, is he?
Sep-14-09  Jim Bartle: No, but he was right, that del Potro challenged way too late. Whatever happens, I think the handshake will be pretty frosty.

Phony Benoni: Meanwhile, the baseball pennant races continue to wind down. The Mets, Pirates, and Diamondbacks are now out, and no fewer than five teams can bite the dust tonight if everything goes wrong.
