Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Fantastic work on USSR championships 1929 and 1967! It's great to see these attempted even if they can never truly be "complete." As usual, your writing makes these well worth reading over :)

Phony Benoni: Boy, I stay away for a few hours and there's a Harry Blackmun sighting! I'm going to have to retire so I can keep up with events here.

<JB> I looked up Dave McNally. He and Messersmith together filed the grievance which led to the arbitrator's decision, but McNally retired without claiming his free agency.

Sep-18-09  suenteus po 147: <Phony Benoni> Here's another one for the index: Game Collection: Hastings 1921/22

When you have experience collecting massive tournaments, these Hastings festivals are a breeze ;)

Sep-18-09  suenteus po 147: <Phony Benoni> While you'll be adding Hastings events every couple of hours/days for the foreseeable future, here are some corrections for the next time you edit it:

1.) you list Game Collection: Hastings Premier 2001/2 twice but you don't yet list this one: Game Collection: Hastings Premier 1998/9

2.) The three tournaments that are not Christmas festivals are referred to as "Summer Congresses" by Jan van Reek here: http://www.endgame.nl/hastings.htm

3.) You list this Game Collection: Hastings 1937/38 as one of mine, but actually <sneaky pete> collected it :)

That's about it so far, but it's a handy index and will be increasingly useful once I collect another fifty or sixty of these :)

Sep-18-09  A.G. Argent: Holliday whacks a walk off jack, bottom of the 9th. Whew. ( Sorry, Travis.)
Sep-18-09  Jim Bartle: Darn, that game was on here, but I turned it off.
Sep-18-09  A.G. Argent: And, Jim, putting it as a <strange ego fest> is ever so accurate but the operative word is indeed <strange>. Why, oh bloody why, was that neccesary? Discolored the whole thing for him. Took away far too much from what should have been nothing more than a perfect moment in NBA history. Arguably the best player of all time feeling the need to say that stuff in his Hall of Fame induction speech was indeed very strange.
Sep-19-09  Jim Bartle: From goat to hero:

Ichiro is picked off twice by the Yankees, then hits game-winner with 2 out in the ninth off Rivera.

AG: Listen to Stockton's to see how it should be done.

Sep-19-09  playground player: <keypusher> You're right--it was Douglas with the umbras and penumbras. Got my wacky Supreme Court decisions mixed up.

But that's as far as I'm going to take that subject in this forum. Unless, of course, somebody wants to nominate Ernie Banks for the next USSC vacancy...

Sep-19-09  A.G. Argent: http://seattle.mariners.mlb.com/med... Quite fun to watch. By the way, it sure is nice that there don't seem to be any Yankee fans peeking in here.

Phony Benoni: <A.G. Argent>: Watching that, I get the impression Ichiro still isn't sure about what to do at these celebrations in the United States.
Sep-19-09  Jim Bartle: The other night Ichiro got a game-winning single, then ran around in the outfield to avoid being mobbed by his teammates.

Did Ichiro go with the big swing because he was embarrassed after being picked off twice in the same game?

I do wonder if Ichiro plays the way that's best for his team. He's got power (how he gets it from that swing I don't know, but he does) and could produce a lot more runs, but he seems interested only in a high batting average and hitting lots of singles.

Phony Benoni: With that swing and his physical build, I doubt Ichiro would have a lot of consistent power; he probably just guessred right in that spot. He regularly drives in 50-60 runs per year. Just to compare him with another lead-off hitter, Rickey Henderson's best years were in the low 70s, with a lot more home runs.

As long as he's hitting lead-off, getting on base is his job and that means a lot of singles. If he were hitting third and saw more runners on base, you might see him try to drive the ball more, but I can't believe that what he is doing now hurts his team.

Sep-19-09  Jim Bartle: I'm certain he's helping his team; I just wonder if he could help it more. Or maybe that's like saying Willie McCovey would have helped more if he'd played shortstop.
Sep-20-09  playground player: <Jim Bartle> I think Dick Dietz was in line for that shortstop job before McCovey. (Mays played a few games at short, though.)
Sep-20-09  A.G. Argent: Willie Mays at shortstop?
Sep-20-09  playground player: <A.G.Argent> Yes, Willie Mays at shortstop--you could look it up. One game in 1963, and one game in 1964.

Not too surprising: Willie played short before he moved to centerfield--very, very early in his career.

Sep-20-09  A.G. Argent: <P. Player>, oh, I believed you. It just kinda jumped off the page, ain't sure why. Maybe because he is cemented in our conciousness as one of the best outfielders of all time. Downright synonomous with centerfield, he is/was.

Phony Benoni: Here's one of the games. Mays played SS from the 10th to 12th innings.

Wasn't Mantle originally a shortstop as well?

Sep-20-09  Jim Bartle: Watching an NFL preview show, somebody reported that "Chris Canty is out with a calf."

Interesting, but really, I wish they would stick to football and leave the personal stuff out of it.
