NJ--no rating. Favorites, Morphy, Marshall, Anderssen. Played a lot as a teen, then let it go for 40 years. Trying to reconstitute myself as a chess player.

Meanwhile, let this forum serve as a refuge from wild-eyed loony leftism. Here there will be no admiration for Hugo Chavez, Castro, or any of the other tin-pot dictators admired by chess players from the safety of freedom-loving Western democracies. Here will be found a premise that most of the nations of the world today are governed by Godless fools. Ours, too, unfortunately.

I was also going to say some uncomplimentary things about Queen Pawn games, the Sicilian and the French Defenses, Semi-Slav games, and a few other chess matters. But as those are purely questions of personal taste, I have chosen to leave them alone.

Since setting up this forum, I have also had several novels published: "Bell Mountain," "The Cellar Beneath the Cellar," and "The Thunder King." For more information about them (and me), visit my website, http://leeduigon.com/

Update, much delayed: my fourth book, "The Last Banquet," came out last year, and my fifth, "The Fugitive Prince," I expect to be published sometime this Spring. For book covers and free sample chapters, visit my blog.

Update again: "The Fugitive Prince" is out now and the next project is "The Palace." Editing is well advanced, but we're still waiting for a cover.

Update: "The Palace" is in print now along with No. 7, "The Glass Bridge," with No. 8, "The Temple," waiting in the wings. The first seven are all available via amazon.com.

Update: No. 8, "The Temple," and No.9, "The Throne," are now in print, with No. 10, "The Silver Trumpet,"due for release any day now.

OhioChessFan: The reason the link in today's blog doesn't work is there's a space in between the "www." and "scmp." etc etc etc

Eliminate the space and the link will work.

playground player: <OCF> Not only will they be able to turn you off: they can also store you in the closet or under the bed and allow many years to pass before trotting you out again. Of course, it isn't really you, but only a hi-tech facsimile. But depending on how realistic it is, some of your family members may eventually lose track of which you is really you.

Dec-09-14  Alien Math: Study Eyes Influence of Religion on Future Space Exploration

A new study by a political science professor in Ohio has taken a close look at how a person's religous beliefs can influence personal opinions on space exploration.

University of Dayton political science assistant professor, Joshua Ambrosius, used data from the General Social Survey and three Pew surveys to compare knowledge, interest and support for space exploration among Catholics, Evangelicals, Mainline Protestants, Jews, Eastern religions and those with no religion.

His research, "Separation of Church and Space: Religious Influences on Support for Space Exploration Policy" was recently presented at the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion conference in Indianapolis.

Among his findings, Ambrosius found that Evangelicals — who account for one-quarter of the U.S. population — are the least knowledgeable, interested and supportive of space exploration, while Jews and members of Eastern traditions were most attentive and supportive, according to a Univ. of Dayton press statement.

playground player: <Alien Math> As a Christian who views the Bible's authority as supreme, I'm fairly enthusiastic about space exploration. We should've been on Mars by now!

I do have some misgivings about the whole enterprise being monopolized by governments. After all, the private sector did do a pretty thorough job of exploring Earth itself.

In fact, I don't trust the government with much of anything, these days; and in the wake of the Global Warming Hoax, I don't believe much of what I hear from Big Science, either.

The entire Creation, including outer space and its contents, proclaims the glory of the God who created it. How can it hurt our faith to know God's handiwork?

OhioChessFan: <Along with local area groups, some parents are irate that their children’s sex ed class at Acalanes High School in Lafayette is being taught by employees of Planned Parenthood without their prior knowledge. They are also fuming over the methods and materials being used, including a checklist that asks students if they are “ready for sex” and another worksheet that describes how to give and obtain consent, as well as a diagram that uses a "genderbread" person for lessons in gender identity>

<OhioChessFan> I wonder what the public schools have to do, anymore, to provoke parents to pull their kids out of there. Set fire to the building?

Dec-10-14  TheFocus: Many people have pulled their children from public schools due to what is being taught, early sex education, including the acceptance that faggotry is a good thing to teach, and the excessive political correctness going on. (A child gets suspended because he ate one corner off a sandwich and it resembled a gun???)

I refuse to allow my grandchildren to be educated in public schools. Only private schools for us now. Luckily, the mizzrus agrees with me, she being a product of private schools.

But of course what they're really trying to do, if they can't get Christianity outlawed, is to smother it in meaninglessness.

Kind of gives new meaning to "planned parenthood".
