Even if you think that you can't get any better at chess, your comments here are educational to those of us who delude ourselves into thinking that we still have something to learn. If you do leave this site, I will be one of the members who will miss you.

  Annie K.: <Deffi: <yeah, i dont think i would improve much from here>>

Deffi... actually, when you reach that point in corr. chess, I'd say this is the time to go OTB! You should be good for a title. :)

Jun-26-12  Open Defence: thanks all, I gave up OTB chess a long time ago (more than 17 years ago) due to my career and family, now its time to go that way in CC as well, wont leave cg.com entirely but obviously would not be too involved in analysing games or working on openings like I used to
Jun-26-12  technical draw: < wont leave cg.com entirely >

Good. Uh, can I have my $20 back?

Annie K.: <Deffi> yeah, I know you played OTB a long time ago, but I'm thinking that may have been a little premature.

Personally, I strongly believe that these days, when finding playing partners online is so easy at any time control, one should at first learn, practice, and play, online - until the exact time when they believe they can say 'well, this is about as good as I'm ever likely to be'. And <then> - with all the knowledge and confidence you have gained over the years - is the time to go out and play in "real" OTB events, for rating points. And in your case, titles. You *are* that good, now!

Seriously, it would be a pity to just throw away your current top form. I'm not saying drop everything else, quit your job, and go totally pro. But go, and play in rated events whenever you get a chance. If you can become a titled player on that basis, even if it takes longer - and I really think you can - this will not only be fun and challenging, but something to be proud of - for your family, as well as yourself. :)

Jun-26-12  hms123: <Annie> <Deffi>

I played serious OTB back in the 70s and got to the point where I was studying chess so many hours that I had to either give up my job and my family or give up chess. I made the right decision and gave up chess for 30 some years.

Now I have more time and can study as I wish without getting as intense about it as I did when I was younger.

In other words, I understand and support <Deffi's> decision. I am glad to hear that she will stay on the site at a lower level of intensity. None of us is going to be the next world champion.

Jun-27-12  Everett: <Open Defence> I feel the same about trying to avoid the all-consuming pull of chess, and I'm still struggling with understanding the game. And, yes, all those other things to learn about, and kids, too!

FWIW, I don't know if you do this with your cc games, but I found that when I switched to only playing friends (preferably who I do well against!) I enjoyed it much more. Playing against strangers made things feel much more competitive and antagonistic; with friends, I was able to lighten up, enjoy the games more, and applaud my friend when they got the best of me. Best of all, it is simply shared time with a great friend, so chess is merely a way to be together.

But... I play my best chess when I am analyzing on my own from books, and avoid this site. It seems to be true that the more I visit here, I was in the role of "fan." The more I am away, I am a player.

Thank you for your insightful comments over the years. Hope to still see your kibitzes, albeit less frequently.

Jun-28-12  NakoSonorense: I'm quitting chess, too. Hey, <TD>, where's my $20?
Jun-28-12  Open Defence: Thanks <Everett>, well I actually like the competitive element, have no problem in playing to win and can be quite dispassionate about my opponents

The issue is time and the work involved to play high level CC is enormous

My main reason for giving it up is that I feel that most of my efforts now would result merely in maintaining my strength and would not really result in much improvement from here, this is probably the peak level of performance i can achieve and from here its only downhill

For me chess was never just to pass the time... (so in that perspective I am quite a mediocre chess player)

Jul-17-12  brankat: <WannaBe> Re: W.Shirer's book: "The Rise and the Fall of the Third Reich".

A brilliantly written book! By a superb writer, who was also an eyewitness to a number of events he wrote about, particularly during the 1930s and the spring and summer of 1940.

I guess You have reached the part dealing with the Munich Conference, 1938. A critical period indeed! And an infamous one, too.

Enjoy the rest of the book.
