WannaBe: In case I forgot, congrats to them Lady Bruins. =)) U. Mich (69-63) won, but the last spread I saw was -6.5, so if you took UConn w/ spread, you got very lucky, if you bet on them U. Mich, I feel bad; the O/U was 148.5

WannaBe: <CIO> LOL. I remember those mems... <chancho> North by Norwest, totally agree, the audiences know that the plane scene was filmed earlier and played on a screen behind. It was still drama. Same thing with the Mt. Rushmore chase scene.

WannaBe: ¡Olé! ¡Olé! this is what I see for "¡Olé! ¡Olé!" (game of the day Mar-13-2026) I also know this issue have been around for a while, and it's not that important, in IT term, it is a level 'C', cosmetic fix. But I just wish to report it again. Can CG.com unify this ...

WannaBe: <FSR> March 11 is his birthday, and usually PoD is chosen from the birth date of the player. So unless CG.com decides to change the algorithm on how PoD is decided. We will randomly get "undesired" player(s).

Feb-19-16  Jim Bartle: Yes, relief, though I had to be reminded it was him years later. Played for USC. Turns out the catcher was Jack del Rio.

Years earlier I'd seen Dave Kingman pitch for USC as well. Steve Busby, too. I think I missed Fred Lynn.

You see baseball players in college without knowing or remembering the names. Years later you might realize "Oh, did I really see him play?"

When I was in college the highly promoted star was Rod Boone, supposed to be a future major league star. He never made it, but his older brother Bob, who pitched and played third base, did.

OhioChessFan: That's great. Had never known that he pitched.

I recall back about 1990 getting front row seats at a Reds game. Tom Browning was pitching. Known as a junk pitcher, not sure if he even reached 90MPH. Sitting that close, the sound of his fastball hitting the catcher's mitt was startling. I then realized just how hard someone pitching in the high 80's was throwing.

Feb-19-16  Jim Bartle: I've only had the chance a couple of times, especially once right behind the dugout at Dodger Stadium, but being really close is completely different. And you really have to pay attention because a foul ball might come your way any time.

During the 2002 World Series I was standing close by when the Angels came out to warm up. They were just throwing the balls back and forth at 80 ft. or so. But as you say, the balls were just snapping into the gloves, and the players were firing throws really hard with little effort. But it wouldn't have looked like anything special on TV.

Feb-20-16  thegoodanarchist: <Jim Bartle: ... But when you see guys like Randy Johnson, Mike Mussina, Jack McDowell or Mark McGwire pitch up close, it's impressive. (Johnson was a big offender for not throwing strikes, but the speed was scary.)>

Just ask the bird if Johnson had speed...

Yes, we have the video tape to prove it! (Or, nowadays, youtube)

Feb-20-16  thegoodanarchist: <Jim Bartle: ...
I saw the Giants play an exhibition against the Giants in, I think, 1982. >

Interesting. Are you sure this wasn't an intra-squad scrimmage?

Feb-20-16  Jim Bartle: Oops, that was Giants vs. Stanford.
Feb-20-16  thegoodanarchist: Interesting that this all happened in 1 day.
Feb-21-16  thegoodanarchist: Or, maybe I was wrong and it isn't interesting at all.

Funniest true story, a friend of mine have this plate: "KS MIAZ"

So, of course, I had to ask, how did he get that plate? He replied:

"I told the DMV that my mother's from Kansas, my father's from Michigan, and I was born in Arizona."
