jnpope: <Tabanus: Links are under each game>

Fantastic! Thanks <Tab>, not only for finding those games but also for giving us a source. I just spent the morning downloading PDFs.

jnpope: Has anyone ever found a contemporary source for Albin vs Pillsbury, 1902. A partial was given in <La Stratégie> in 1902 and a complete version was given in the 1996 Russian book on Pillsbury, <След Метеора>, but it didn't cite a source.

I've always wanted to know the source, not only for the Pillsbury game, but to see if any of the missing games from Monte Carlo (1902) turned up in it (assuming it was a newspaper chess column).

jnpope: There are multiple problems in the Buesum (1968) crosstable:

3 Kolarov game against Damjanovic is scored 1 horizontal and ½ in the vertical

4 Parma game against Damjanovic is scored 1 in the horizontal and ½ in the vertical

5 O'Kelly game against Damjanovic is scored ½ in the horizontal and 0 in the vertical

6 Hecht game against Damjanovic is scored ½ in the horizontal and 0 in the vertical

9 Besser game against Damjanovic is scored 0 in the horizontal and ½ in the vertical

10 Donner game against Damjanovic is scored ½ in the horizontal and 1 in the vertical

12 Musil last three games in the horizontal: 0 1 1; in the vertical: 1 0 1

13 Pollak last two games in the horitzontal: 1 0; in the vertical: 0 0

Chessical: I will sort the cross table out.

jnpope: I'm starting to build a list of missing games:

Game Collection: Wanted! Dead or Alive
Mar-12-23  Chessist: Alapin-Albin, Dresden 1892, see DWS 1893, p. 110.

Heinrichsen vs E Schallopp, 1898

E Schallopp vs Heinrichsen, 1893

Who is able to permanently delete the alleged tournament game from Cologne? This is not discussed here for the first time.

jnpope: I even added a note to 11th DSB Congress, Cologne (1898), so hopefully this game is excised for good.

jnpope: E Schallopp vs Heinrichsen, 1893

As given in the Baltische Schachblätter, gives "Anm. v. E. Schallopp a. d. Saale-Ztg." which I'm presuming is "Annotated by Schallopp in the Saale-Zeitung"? Does anyone have access to the <Saale-Zeitung>?

jnpope: Thank you! According to Whyld's book on chess columns Schallopp ran the column in <Saale-Zeitung> until 1910. It'll be interesting to see what other wonders lurk in these pages!

jnpope: And I see it gives the complete E Schallopp vs Heinrichsen, 1893 game out to 48 moves too. Time to splice into that PGN.

jnpope: I honestly have no idea how to create the citation for this one...

The newspaper I get: <Saale-Zeitung>, 1893.04.01

But the chess column was in a 4-page insert series (the insert is numbered pages 49 to 52 this issue so I'm guessing it was serialized):
<Blätter fürs Haus>, 2 April 1893, n13, p52.

Mar-12-23  Chessist: That looks good, but it should express that <Blätter fürs Haus> were a (weekly) supplement to <Saale-Zeitung> maybe by sharing the subtitle <Beiblatt zur Saale-Zeitung>.

jnpope: I guess I'm going to go with the dated newspaper first followed by the insert publication treated as a magazine:

Source "Saale-Zeitung, 1893.04.01, Blätter fürs Haus, n13, 2 April 1893, p52"

jnpope: Ok, after more thought, I went with:

Source "Blätter fürs Haus. Beiblatt zur Saale-Zeitung, n13, 2 April 1893, p52"

I have no idea if this actually was an insert or if it was it's own periodical and was just "broken out" and interspersed with the newspaper scans giving the appearance of being an insert. But being that it has it's own date I think it safer to go the route of independent periodical.

Mar-13-23  Chessist: Very surprising, on the one hand. On the other hand, it was clear that Heinrichsen would send his games to some newspaper editor. Does anyone know of a library that holds the "Libausche Zeitung" in which the game was first published?

  jnpope: <Tab>, nice find!

I'm with <Chessist>, any chance we can find a library with holdings for "Libausche Zeitung"? I'm always interested in a source that had a chess column (or at least chess items on occasion).

  jnpope: Thanks.

Can anyone find a Berlin paper with the ninth game from Walbrodt - Schallopp (1891) ?

The <Blätter fürs Haus. Beiblatt zur Saale-Zeitung> is missing the chess column for 1891.08.02 which would have had the ninth game from this match. I checked the other online sites (365chess doesn't have the match; ChessBase gives the same eight games we have). <Deutsche Schachzeitung> and <Deutsches Wochenschach> are also missing many of the games, including the ninth.

jnpope: I didn't find any games in <Libausche Zeitung>, however, it could have been in another edition of that newspaper that wasn't scanned (or preserved).

I just discovered the same type of problem in the <Saale-Zeitung>. I couldn't find any chess columns for 1896, 1897 and most of 1898. Then I found ONE column published for 1898.12.24.

Apparently the chess column had moved from the <Blätter fürs Haus> section into the <Abend-Ausgabe 2. Beiblatt> sometime between 1896 and 1898, but the website doesn't have many scans of the <Evening edition, 2nd supplement>! (argghhh).

Mar-13-23  Chessist: "With the Saturday edition of the "Libausche Zeitung", a "feuilleton supplement" is issued, which is sent free of charge to the newspaper's subscribers."

If not bound in, this supplement may be lost forever.
