The 47th annual Hoogovens international chess tournament was a category XIII event held in Wijk aan Zee, The Netherlands from January 13th to February 3rd, 1985. Fourteen grandmasters and international masters competed in a round robin format in the prestigious A event. The participants were (in order of ELO): Jan Timman (2650), Alexander Beliavsky (2635), Lajos Portisch (2635), Viktor Korchnoi (2630), John Nunn (2615), Oleg Romanishin (2570), Kevin Spraggett (2560), Lubomir Ftacnik (2545), Kiril Georgiev (2535), Eric Lobron (2505), John Van der Wiel (2500), Sergey Kudrin (2485), Hans Ree (2455), and Gert Ligterink (2450). This edition marked Timman's first sole victory at Wijk aan Zee and his second win overall, proving once again that he was one of the West's very best players.
