What is the TOTAL VALUE of the square? P = M + S
Compiled by notyetagm
--*--

P = <M> + <S>

where

P = profit
<M> = material
<S> = significance of square

---

The <TOTAL VALUE (TV)> of a square is the *sum* of

1) the value of the <MATERIAL> on that square (♙♘♗♖♕)

+

2) the value of the <SQUARE> <*ITSELF*> (mating sq, checking sq, interference sq, forking sq, promotion sq, etc.)

This is exactly why a <RABID PAWN> is so dangerous: the <TOTAL VALUE (TV)> of the h8-square, for example, is the Black h8-rook *PLUS* the h8-promotion sq (a new White h8-queen).
