  Sneaky: 23.Qh6 Qf8 24. Re8 (any) 25. Qg7#
Nov-09-02  drukenknight: Nice. was 20...Ne4 better?
Jan-27-04  Taidanii: Haha. Yes, I enjoyed this one very much.
Jan-27-04  Fisto: Good combination.
Jan-27-04  slylonewolf: I agree! :)
Jan-27-04  mdorothy: Definately. It made me studder for a sec.. Cuz you can see all the tactical possibilities instantly, but ya gotta take that studder step and find the right move order.
Jan-27-04  TheTurk: a very beautiful combination, i was originally looking at Nh6+ looking for the queen or forced mate but i couldnt find what to do if Nf8.

Sneaky: Anybody who says they saw this in 15 seconds is either full of it, or deserves a title.
Jan-27-04  Bears092: or in my case, has seen the game before.
Jan-27-04  InspiredByMorphy: LOL. So true Sneaky! My eyes widened a bit when I saw the final moves. I like how Alekhine ignored the center and attacked the King.
Jan-27-04  boobsmacfadin: holy crap...i guess this is what differentiates me from a GM...!

  Sneaky: What's more, it's all forced from 21.♗xb7 on. Note that 22...gxf6 runs into 23.♕h6 ♕f8 24.♖e8!
Jan-27-04  yoniker: But it was an easy puzzle,a forced mate in 4 without any other options! I didn't time myself but it maybe it was less than 15 sec... You guys really need to check encyclopedia of middlegames or other harder tactical problems books. p.s. Alechine saw it from move 21
e.g. 22..gxf Qh6 Qf8 Re8!! wins.
Jan-27-04  Benzol: I hate being the fly in the ointment but this game's finish could have been "doctored" in a similar way to Alyekhin's multi-queens game.

There is a report given in "The American Chess Bulletin 1924 page 129" which apparently gives the score as 22...gxf6 with the following note, "Alekhine announced that if 22...Qxf6, then mate in four, as follows: 23.Re8+ Nf8 24.Nh6+ Qxh6 25.Rxf8+ Kxf8 26.Qd8 mate", namely the moves presented by Alyekhin as the game. After 22...gxf6 White announced mate in three moves: 23.Qh6 Qf8 24.Re8 and mate next move.

Jan-27-04  aulero: If I remember correctly, it was a blindfold exibition game.
Jan-27-04  TheAussiePatzer: Benzol, we can't blame Alekhine for Freeman's weaker and less pretty 22...gxf6, if that's what he played. I also think modifying the game score can be justified by the fact that it results in more chess players seeing this nice combination.
Jan-27-04  NotShee: 2 seconds to find Nh6-idea; 10 seconds to see Re8+. 30 seconds to see the Qd8#.
Jan-27-04  kevin86: I saw this game about thirty years ago;AA was one of the best tacticians ever-this game is a good example!
Jan-27-04  panigma: I saw what pompous jerks many of you are in 3 seconds.
Jan-27-04  Dick Brain: Not a very hard problem unless you're playing blindfold or a simul or as in this case both. <yoniker> encyclopedia of middlegames tactics would be too complex and untidy for here. Anyone who can find the correct answer to at least half of those problems given a half hour each deserves a IM title.
Jan-27-04  crobzub: I was thinking more along the lines of 23. Re8+ Nf8 24. Ne7+ Rxe7 25. Rxe7 when white would have a rook, black a knight. But then I noticed the Qa1, Qc1, Qxc1, Re1, Qxe1 checkmate threat.
Jan-27-04  Catfriend: Not entirely wrong idea! 23.♖e8+ ♘f8 24.♘e7+ ♖:♘e7 25.♕:♕f6 ♖:♖e8 26.♕c3 However, black has R+N+2p vs. Q, so it surely isn't the best move!
Jan-27-04  talchess2003: <notshee:2 seconds to find Nh6-idea; 10 seconds to see Re8+. 30 seconds to see the Qd8#.>

lol you actually counted? what a loser... do you realize that your desperate plea for attention does not appeal to anyone?

Jan-27-04  sleepkid: Oh yeah! I solved this problem before it was even put up on the website, and I've already solved tommorow's problem as well! In .00087 nanoseconds! Yeah! And the next day's too! Yeah! Because I'm a Super-Ultra-Mega GM.

...give me a break people. It doesn't matter how quickly you were able to solve the puzzle. Just that you solved it. Bragging about solving it, or how easy it was for you, doesn't win you any laurels here.
