plang: After a draw in the first game Anand's win in the second game clinched the sixth round match in the World Championship tournament. He then went on to defeat Adams to qualify for the Finals match with Karpov. Kasparov had played 4..Nbd7 earlier in the year in his loss to Svidler at Tilburg. The paradoxical 6 Bb5+ is a specialty of Eugenio Torre. The more "obvious" 6 Re1 makes it more difficult to achieve d4 after 6..0-0. 6..Nc6 seems inferior to either 6..Bd7 or 6..Nbd7 as the knight is decentralized after 8 d5. 10 Bf1 was new; Benjamin had played 10 dxe in his win against Kaidanov at the 1996 US Championship. Gelfand spoiled his defense with 18..h6? missing 20 Nd2 winning material. Seirawan after 25 Nf3: "Black's compensation of two pawns, nice structure and nice bishop might be sufficient, but owning the b7 knight is like being another piece behind." Anand's finish with 33 Qe8 was simple and direct. After 37 Rc8 there is no avoiding 37..Be7 38 Ne8+..Kh6 39 d6 winning a piece.
