Jan-20-07 | | dzechiel: I looked at this for serveral minutes earlier in the evening without coming up with anything concrete. I come back a couple of hours later, and immediately I see 24...d4 and 25...Nf3+ as a powerful attack. Of course, I couldn't see every move in the rest of the game, but it was easy enough to get started. |

Also keep in mind that at best after 26. Qa2! what Black can hope for is a pawn or so The line you have given is decent but with best play White can draw. 25...Qc6 26. Qa2 Nxd3 27. Yes Tallinn, absolutely correct. I have been trying to find a defence for the better part of an hour now and there is nothing adequate in that line. Therefore White should play: 25...Qc6 26. Qa2 Nxd3 27. Rxd3 bxc3 (I was prefering 27...a5! at once) 28. Nc5 a5 27. Nxb7 axb4 28. Qb3! And if 28...Qxb7 29. Bd6! allows for a defensible position. LTJ

Jan-20-07 | | tallinn: LTJ, do you mean Qb3 blocking the pawns (as Qb4 is not a legal move)? Looks still like a clear win for black, two connected passed pawns ahead after Qxb7 and the white queen is a rather weak blocker. The best defense according to fritz is Qb1 Qxb7 Bd6 Rf7 Qxb4 (Bxb4 c2! ) Qxb4 Bxb4 c2 and black is winning. To prevent the promotion of c2 white has to give material sooner or later. |

Fot the time being, let's begin with
A) 32. Rxf6! Qb6+ 33. Kh2 Rxf6 34. Be5 Rf8 (34...Rh1 is appaling because of the straight-forward 35. Bxf6+ Qxf6 36. Qxb4 EVEN) 35. Rxc3 with a slight edge to Black Alright, guys, show me the refutation.

Jan-20-07 | | LoveThatJoker: Tallinn, I solved the puzzle, man. I am just saying that Attica's 25. Bf4 suggestion is a good one and worth investigating it further. Let's just say that I'm kind of playing Devil's Advocate here for the sake of completeness. However, I cannot deny that I commend Attica for finding a tougher defense in 25. Bf4. That move is worthy of praise regardless of what Fritz says. Try refuting that sheeyat OTB! And why does Fisheremon have a same line as Fritz? Without crediting Fritz? I don't use fritz or anything like that so I rely on my own analysis. Connected Passers are strong indeed. That is why Tallinn I saw the correct logic when you refuted the 28. Qd5 line earlier. I am not scared about suggesting something and seeing whether or not it works. After all, we're all chess players here and hopefully we're all searching for Truth. And truly, unless Black has an absolutely hopeless position, he should not really resign. In this case, he must continue fighting on!
And finally I would like to remind you guys that I solved the puzzle. Where is your analysis on that? Lastly, I would like to see what Fritz says on Attica's suggestion of 25. Bf4 LTJ

<And why does Fisheremon have a same line as Fritz? Without crediting Fritz?> That line's quite foeced no need to refer to Fritz. I'd underline that the key move was 27...a5 which (I'm not sure) might not be found by Fritz. |

I'd underline that the key move was 27...a5 which (I'm not sure) might not be found by Fritz.>Hey Fisheremon. Alright. I analyzed your 34...Re8 extensively and even with the most sophisticated tactical operations available for White the most he can hope for is for a position where White has his R on c1 his Q checking the Black King on diagonals from the B-file, whereas Black would have his R on c8, his Q on some square on the K-side and his pawn on c2. In any case, I think it turns out to be definitely a very difficult position for White to hold. Therefore, with regards to your assessment of 34...Re8, I must again say that you analyzed that line correctly. However
Let us look at option B)
B) 32. Bxb4 Rb8 33. Rxf6!! Rxf6 34. Bxc3! Qa7+ 35. Kh1 Rxb3 36. Bxf6+ Kg8 37. Rxb3 (=) LTJ

Jan-21-07 | | LoveThatJoker: I would just like to say two final things regarding this game.
It is obvious that after 25. Bf4! Qc6! White has a lot of work cut-out for him in order to save this game. Indeed it almost appears as if though White is in a spot where every move he plays from here on in will have to be the best move available to him. Black has the better of it in this middlegame thanks to the strong tactical idea of 23...d4! And indeed to say that some lines are losing for Black is indeed unfair. Black has way more options than White here. And one cannot argue against the Truth of the position at hand. *Fisheremon: I apologize for having been hasty; And futhermore, I retract this <Here's the winning line 25...Qc6 26.Rf2 Nxd3 27.Rxd3 Bg7 28.Qa2 Rae8 29.Rxd4 Bxd4 30.cxd4 Re1+ 31.Kh2 Rxf4 32.Rxf4 Qd6 33.Qf2 Ra1 34.Nc5 g5> Not this time man. I analyzed the 25...Qc6 line ages ago. 25...Qc6 26. Qa2! Your line is not winning. It is losing.> Although in your line after 26. Rf2 White loses the game, it was both unfair and incorrect for me to say that 25...Qc6 was losing, as we both have discovered that 25...Qc6 leads to a strong initiative for Black. However I must still say - due to the great depth of good moves available to both sides- that it is unfair to say the move leads to a WON game). <This is a personal note to Fisheremon - My exposition continues here>* After 25. Bf4! (A great move suggested by Attica) and 25...Qc6! (The strongest move first published by Fisheremon) there is a lot of game left to be played in which both sides must remain constantly aware of tactical traps. And if you don't believe me, look at the fact that in almost every line - suggested by Attica, Fisheremon, Talinn and myself - there is a great wealth of resources. Even in what could at least be termed one of the most authoritative lines 25. Bf4! Qc6! 26. Qa2 Nxd3 27. Rxd3 bxc3 28. Nc5 a5! 29. Nxb7 axb4 30. Qb3! Qxb7 31. Bd6, Black has at his disposal no less than three interesting replies at his disposal in 31...Rf7, 31...Qe4 and 31...Rad8 Even a move that appears to be refuted has other tremendous resources attached to it like the 31...Rf7 32. Rxf6 Re8! (Fisheremon) or 31...Rf7 32. Bxb4! c2! (Myself). Therefore, it can be said that through our dilligent and shared investigation of this great game Romanishin-Balashov (1979), White's best try in reply to 23...d4! is indeed 24. Bf4! and futhermore that it would have taken both sides a lot of energy Over The Board to find the amazing refutations that we Chess Lovers and Enthusiasts have found here on CG. LoveThatJoker
