Sep-23-05  woodenbishop: One great player draws with a legendary player... despite Joel's masterful handling of the pieces, he could not have even hopped to draw against the Tal of the 60s.
Sep-23-05  ughaibu: That's a big improvement on the post you deleted, well done.
Sep-23-05  who: <woodenbishop: One great player draws with a legendary player... despite Joel's masterful handling of the pieces, he could not have even hopped to draw against the Tal of the 60s.> I think you are exaggerating Tal's skill. Search Tal and game result = draw and you will find many games against unknown people from the 1960s. Also see http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail... for instance.
Sep-23-05  woodenbishop: <who> In chess debates, there exist hordes of exaggerations. Like for instance, in 1975 a still developing Karpov would've dethroned an experienced Fischer for the W. Championship. Anyway, I think the Tal of 1960, who toppled Botvinnik, the pride of Iron curtain chess to become the youngest World Chess Champion in history at that time, would batter Benjamin mercilessly.

Sep-23-05  woodenbishop: Bled, Sept. 2 thru Oct. 4 1961.

1. Tal

2. Fischer

3. Petrosian, Keres, Gligoric

4. Geller, Trifunovic

Sep-23-05  woodenbishop: So, what your saying <who>, is had Benjamin played in the Bled tournament of 1961, he would've finished 1st ahead of an army of world class chess strength?

No, he is (correctly) saying Benjamin could have hoped to draw against the Tal of the 1960s.

Sep-23-05  abcpokerboy: <woodenbishop>, Kasparov, who was at least as successful at his peak as Tal, didn't win half the games he ever played. Your suggestion that Benjamin would be an actual underdog to draw against Tal is hyperbole in extremis.
Sep-23-05  who: Even if he were an underdog to draw he still would have at least had a chance at drawing. That's all I said.
Sep-23-05  who: Sheesh.
Sep-23-05  woodenbishop: It amazes me how most kibitzers at this website fail to see past their shallow narrow-mindedness. But at least they all have one thing in common... mutual ignorance that is bliss. ENJOY!
Sep-23-05  who: Huh? What are you responding to?
Sep-23-05  RookFile: Well, I don't know why anybody is getting excited about this game. It's obvious that Tal didn't come to play this day, so just made a draw. Maybe he wasn't feeling well or something, Tal was dead not too long after this.
