Nov-27-03  Spitecheck: Apparently this is also a consultancy this time however Bird consults with himself (assuming that info to be correct). This game was also played before the Gunsberg encounter.

Nov-27-03  Spitecheck: Are you sure it's not Bird vs Muller and Louis Van Vliet? The scoresheet mentions Muller.

Jul-09-12  Nightsurfer: White - in this game here <Bird/Allies vs Louis Van Vliet, 1893> - starts an experiment with the move 5. c3 ... , please have a look at the diagram as follows.

That interesting idea 5.c3 ... - being the prelude to 6.Qa4+ ... in face of the obvious Black plan 5. ... g4 - looks less "natural" than the classic 5.d4 ..., please compare Bird vs Lasker, 1892, but 5.c3 ... has worked out well in this game here <Bird/Allies vs Louis Van Vliet, 1893>.

But 116 years later that very 5.c3 ... has failed to do the job in S Meininger vs R Gralla, 2009, maybe because of Black's new try 5. ... Nc6, please have a look at the diagram as follows.

Since Black wants to move his right-wing Knight to the position c6 anyway that very riposte 5. ... Nc6 (in S Meininger vs R Gralla, 2009) seems to be an alternative that deserves further consideration - instead of the hasty 5. ... g4 that invites to 6.Qa4+ ... , please compare with the corresponding diagram as follows.

The foregoing diagram depicts the position after 5. ... g4 that has been played in this game here <Bird/Allies vs Louis Van Vliet, 1893>.
