plang: Botvinnik was critical of Lisitsin's opening allowing black to set up a solid center (similar to a Samisch Kings Indian set-up). 5 Bb5+ and 7 Be2 can't possibly be good clearly losing a tempo. Botvinnik felt that 14 exd was necessary to avoid the expansion that Botvinnik carried out with 15..f5 and 16..e4. If Lisitsin had followed up his clever defense 27 Nh1 and 28 f4 with 31 Bxg4 he would have had reasonable chances. After 31..Be4!, however, his position fell apart. Perhaps 37 Bg4!? might have been a better try.
Jun-01-11  parisattack: I think this is the game (in Botvinnik's book) with the famous, 'As every Russian schoolboy knows....' line?

I don't see anything like that in <Selected Games>.

Edward Winter investigated this in Chess Notes #4891, and pointed to Botvinnik vs C H Alexander, 1958 as the "every Russian schoolboy" game, citing a couple of British magazines from the time. The schoolboy knowledge was said to be the need to play ...gxf5 instead of ...Bxf5 in that game.

keypusher: <beatgiant> But the remark is attributed to Bronstein, not Botvinnik.

You're right, but nobody ever promised us that our folklore would be completely accurate.

See also Leonhardt vs H Wolf, 1907 where <Karpova> quotes another Chess Notes citing a much earlier version.
