Jul-03-17  AlicesKnight: Several roads lead to a win but the simplest is 24...Be3+ deflecting the Q. Whether White captures or interposes the Q, ...Qg4 mates.
Jul-03-17  Ariogermano: Also 24...f6
Jul-03-17  leRevenant: <Phony Benoni: Darn...> I hereby dub you Honest Benoni.
Jul-03-17  WorstPlayerEver: I just looked at which square was uncovered: f4.
Jul-03-17  Caissas Clown: Be3 + and it's game "ERVOUR".
Sorry , could not resist ! :-)
Jul-03-17  morfishine: Took me a couple of minutes to see this one, perhaps because viewing 'Black to move' from White's side, but in any case

The deflection <24...Be3+> forces White's response allowing <25...Qg4#>

*****

Jul-03-17  stacase: <morfishine: Took me a couple of minutes to see this one, >

Took me a little while too, should have said so above.

Jul-03-17  zb2cr: Thought process:

White's King has just one escape square: f4. So, if we could somehow deliver a check that came through that square... But White's Queen takes...But since White's Queen is guarding a potential mate at g4, that allows Black to play ... Qg4#!

Jul-03-17  WorstPlayerEver: In general I have no clue how to look at this.

However, in this simple case White has 2 mate positions: Qg4 and Be3. The Black Queen cannot cover both squares.

Sometimes I can have clear visions too. Sounds logical. I like Mondays ☺

Jul-03-17  saturn2: ..Be3 deflects the guard
Jul-03-17  patzer2: <1.Nf3 c5 2.c4 g6 3.g3 Bg7 4.Bg2 Nc6 5.Nc3 Nh6 6.d3 Nf5 7.e4?!> Black wants to play 7... Nd4 anyway, so White assists by blocking his Bishop, weakening himself on the dark squares and delaying development. Better is 7.O-O = to as in White's win in Efimenko vs A Evdokimov, 2013.

<7...Nfd4 8.Nxd4 Nxd4 9.Ne2 d6 10.Nxd4 Bxd4 11.Qb3 Qa5+ 12.Bd2?> This mistake overlooks a simple deflection tactic which wins at least a pawn and gives White a near decisive advantage. Better instead is 12.Ke2 .

<12...Bxf2+ 13.Ke2 Bg4+ 14.Bf3 Bxf3+ 15.Kxf3??> With this blunder, White's position goes from weak and shaky to completely lost as White will now win a piece to go along with his extra pawn.

Instead, White can fight on only a pawn down with 15.Kxf2 Qxd2+ 16.Kxf3 O-O-O 17.Qc3 Qg5 .

<15...Qxd2 16.Qb5+ Kf8 17.Qxb7 Bd4!!> Black can win easy with 17...Kg7 , but instead decides to win with flair with this strong and clever move.

<18.Qxa8+ Kg7 19.Qd5 Qf2+!> This forces mate-in-nine.

<20.Kg4 Qg2 21.e5 h5+ 22.Kh4 g5+ 23.Kxg5 Qh3 24.Qf3 Be3+! 0-1> This deflection solves toay's July 3, 2017 puzzle. Black resigns in lieu of 25.Qxe3 ( 25.Qf4 Qg4# ) 25...Qg4#.

Jul-03-17  Iwer Sonsch: Today's puzzle solution is 24...a6!!, leading to mate after 25.Kf4 Qe6 26.Qe2 dxe5+ 27.Kf3 Qg4+ 28.Kg2 Qxe2+ 29.Kh3 h4 30.Rhf1 hxg3+ 31.Kxg3 Qxd3+ 32.Kg4 Qh3+ 33.Kg5 Rh5#.

Kappa. The text move was obvious.

Still, any quiet move wins, including e.g. 24...dxe5 25.Rhf1 f6+ 26.Qxf6+ exf6+ 27.Rxf6 Qg4#.

White lost the game with the obvious blunder of 16.Kxf3?? Qxd2. Instead, 16.Kxf2 Qxd2+ 17.Kxf3 lets White play on even after Euwe's great pawn-winning combination (which White could have prevented with 12.Ke2!).

tobywan: No queen sac. Clearly too difficult for a Monday.
Jul-03-17  kevin86: Cracked my skull for three WHOLE seconds. No queen sac-just Be3+ and mate WITH the queen.

Stonehenge: Well, as <newzild> already pointed out, Euwe could have sacrificed his queen with 22...Be3 23.Qxg2 g5+ 24.Kh3 g4+ 25.Kh4 Kh6.
Jul-03-17  WorstPlayerEver: Well, the idea was good ☺
Jul-03-17  Strelets: Sacrifice the bishop instead of the queen? Surprise!
Jul-03-17  alphee: Simple, elegant, effective and rather easy to find.
Jul-03-17  Halldor: Nice deflection move. This reminds me of the positions I got when I was six years old and liked to walk the King. I was punished for that.
Jul-03-17  Makenene: A simple but elegant solution.
Jul-03-17  ColeTrane: The first thing about this puzzle We did was rewind and see how n the heel white ended up with his king way over there... Then We realized that he was already lost by move 15.... Only THEN did We try to solve it and at that point it was relatively simple and the answer pretty much jumps out
