Dec-28-04  molinov: Very strange game beyond my capacity to comprehend.Maybe Ray can explain what's behind the very surprising 9.... dxe3.

Sneaky: Well, the first obvious fact is that if Black just moves the queen out of the way, say 9...Qd8, then 10.Bxd4 and White has the better position and is up a pawn. Instead Keene tries to mix things up by creating an imbalanced position, sacrificing his queen. The third option is 10...Qa5+ which the database seems to indicate is a drawish variation.

The Opening Explorer brought this to light:

The game Miles vs Rohde, 1984 was a copycat, but there White played 12.Qd2 and went on to win.

The usual continuation of this line is not to sacrifice the queen, but instead to play 9...Qa5+ 10. b4 Qxb4+ 11. Bd2 Qa3 12. Bc1 Qb4+ 13. Bd2 Qa3 1/2-1/2, a quick GM draw which has happened eight times in our database, including Keene vs Suttles, 1973.

What I can't figure out is this: if Keene only wanted a draw, then why get into the risky queen sac line, why not use the known variation 9...Qa5+ like Suttles did to him in '73? I guess he feared that some improvement is found over 10.b4 which might give White winning chances? I'm interested in hearing his account of this.

ray keene: i played qa5+ against seirawan the previous year and didnt like it. the q sac wasnt played to draw it was played to get an interesting position-i think miles might have later refutd the variation but as agdestein played i felt i was the one who was pressing for the win. i gave a draw in the final position rather reluctantly but i cdnt see any way to improve blacks chances then-can anyone suggest any way for black to play on?
