Honza Cervenka: 46...Rh2+ is very elegant and very wrong. Instead of that simple 46...Bh3+ 47.Kg1 Nd3 48,Qd4+ Kg8 (diagram 1) would have won the game on the spot.

Of course, 49.Ne2 leads to mate after 49...Qg5+.

Black also missed a beautiful chance to finish white two moves earlier. 44...Rh8+ 45.Kg2 (45.Kg1 Ba4 ) 45...Bh3+ 46.Kg1 (46.Kf2 Bc8! with threats Rh2+ or Bxb7) 46...Nd3!! (diagram 2)

47.Qxd3 Qc5+ leads to mate and against threatening Qf4 or Qg5 white has no good defense.

Jun-19-16  Henry Winter: Honza Cervenka

Thank you so much for the insightful analysis. I was studying this game from VK's bio, and just knew something was funny about that ending.

Mar-05-24  VictorVonDoom: Are the moves 44. f3 and 46. ....Rh2+ blunders or mistakes
