Honza Cervenka: White too long hasitated with 0-0. For example, he could play 11.0-0 instead of 11.b4. His last chance seems to be 16.0-0 instead of 16.f3 which is very bad move probably losing the game.

If 21.fxe4 then 21...Ng4 22.Qb3 Bxe4 23.Bxe4 (or 23.Bf3 Qd4 and black wins) Qxe4 24.Qf3 Qd4 25.Kf1 Nxh2+ 26.Rxh2 Qd1+ with next 27...Qxc1 and black wins.

Sep-16-02  pawntificator: why not 21. fxe4 Ng4 22. Qf4?

  Honza Cervenka: Well, it seems to be better but it's also insufficient. For example 21. fxe4 Ng4 22. Qf4 Qc3+ 23.Bd2 Qa1+ [or 23...Rxd2 24.Qxd2 Qa1+ 25.Qd1 Qxd1+ 26.Kxd1 Nf2+ (26...Ne3+ 27.Ke1 Nxg2 28.Kf2 Bxe4 29.Rc1 gives some counter-chances to white thanks to activation of his rook) 27.Kd2 Nxh1 28.Bxh1 e5 and black should win this bishop's ending without problems] 24.Bc1 e5 25.Qxg4 Qxc1+ 26.Kf2 Qxa3 etc.
Sep-17-02  pawntificator: yes, it would still be lost...
Jan-10-05  Shah Mat: after 27. Rxg2 Nf1+ 28. Kh1 Nxe3 and then white goes into the endgame down two pawns with a bishop against a rook.
Feb-08-06  Kangaroo: Keep in mind: the winner of this bright game was an old man, at the age of 70!
Apr-13-06  chesstoplay: Black's 6 pawns in 2 pawn islands just overwhelms White's 4 pawns in 3 pawns islands. White's endgame is just simply lost. Taimanov may have been old in years, but his chess spirit was clearly young in heart.
Apr-13-06  dzechiel: Looked and looked and looked until my screen saver kicked in (5 minutes) and then looked some more and still missed this combination. Nuts!
Apr-13-06  Infohunter: I saw the idea of unmasking the long diagonal, but I didn't get anywhere conclusive with it. C'est la vie...
Apr-13-06  Jarlaxle: nice ........ puzzle..........YEEEEEEAH!
Apr-13-06  United33: i absolutely miss that night move. What i try to find is mate combination, but i'm totally wrong. After several move of this solution, white has no more hope to fight again 27.Rxg2 Nf1+, 28.Kg1 Nxe3 29.Bxe3 Bxg2 30.Kxg2 ... and black have 6 pawns and 1 rook, but white only get 4 pawns and 1 bishop. no more hope for white to stand
Apr-13-06  ice lemon tea: gotcha! nice puzzle CG!
Apr-13-06  zev22407: Taimanov took the initiative early in this game, not letting his rivel to breath. A game of dynamism and initiative.
Apr-13-06  ckr: Got 25...Nd2 26.Rg1, saw the knight fork on f1 and somehow came up with 26...Bxg2 27.Rxg2 28.Nf1 - no good and totally missed QxB+. How could I be so stupid <Don't answer that>
Apr-13-06  Confuse: wow i got it cool. easy for a thursday ~ is this weeks theme easy puzzles? O:-)
Apr-13-06  Manu2: Got it too nice puzzle CG!!
Apr-13-06  mr j: Turlte is on a roll.. looking forward to fridays puzzle :)

Apr-13-06  pawntificator: Gosh, I came up with 25...Rd2. It still looks good to me. Someone tell me how it is an utter failure of a move.

OBIT: Good puzzle for the folks who come here for their daily tactical exercise. It takes a few minutes to realize there is no mate and that the best plan is to exploit the long diagonal in some way. I dare anyone to claim they saw all this immediately. (Yes, some will, no doubt...)

<pawntificator> 25...Rd2 26. Bxe4 Bxe4 27. Rg1 leaves everything hanging.

Apr-13-06  iamverywellatchess: 26. Rxf7 wins for white. Not a good puzzele.
Apr-13-06  Richerby: Just played through the game: it's amazing that the black knight sits on e4 for fully seven moves while attacked by a pawn on f3. (Didn't get the puzzle: saw 25... ♘d2 26.♖g1 but was then going to play 26... ♘f1+??. Ouch.)
Apr-13-06  Richerby: <iamverywellatchess> 26.♖xf7?? ♕xg2#.
Apr-13-06  iamverywellatchess: Richerbut, run it again through the machine! You are in-correct.
Apr-13-06  zabbura2002: 27. Rxg2 Nf1+ 28. Kh1 then which is better
(1) 28. ... Bxg2+ 29. Kxg2 Nxe3+ 30. Bxe3
(2) 28. ... Nxe3 29. Bxe3 Bxg2+ 30. Kxg2
(3) 28. ... Nxe3 29. Bxe3 Rd1+ 30. Kh2 Bxg2
Apr-13-06  Hudson Hawk: <iamverywellatchess> What are you talking about? And are you implying that he needed a computer to see a mate in 1 from that position? Why don't you tell us what is incorrect. Is that not mate?
